Book excerpt: Self Help Groups (SHGs) play a crucial role in creating entrepreneurship among rural and urban poor. This creates employment opportunities among poor people which ultimately results into the enhanced financial security and social status for its members, especially women. SHGs are key to women empowerment and ensuring regular income to rural and urban poor. The overall impact not only helps to empower women only but also increases social and financial stability among rural and urban poor, their standard of living and the education of their children. The study also focuses on impact of Govt. support in their success as a micro entrepreneur. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Self-Help Myth reveals how philanthropy maintains systems of inequality by attracting attention to the behaviors and responsibilities of poor people while shifting the focus away from structural inequities and relationships of power that produce poverty. The book features foundation investments in addressing migrant poverty in California's Central Valley, simultaneously one of the wealthiest agricultural production regions in the world and home to the poorest people in the United States. The case studies show how compromises between foundation staff and community organizers produce programs that ask farmworkers to help themselves while excluding strategies that address the role of industrial agriculture in creating and maintaining regional poverty. Through archival and ethnographic case studies of foundation investments leading up to the historic Farm Worker Movement, to large scale foundation-driven initiatives to improve conditions in agricultural communities during the 1990s and 2000s, foundations set firm boundaries around definitions of self-help - excluding labor organizing, immigrant rights, and advocacy approaches that hold industry accountable for the enduring abuses of farmworkers and immigrants. Processes of professionalization and institutionalization required to maintain philanthropic relationships further frustrate nonprofit organizational staff increasingly accountable to foundations and not to the people they aim to represent and serve."--Provided by publisher.

Book Social networks mobility and political participation The potential for women s self help groups to improve access and use of public entitlement schemes in India

Download or read book Social networks mobility and political participation The potential for women s self help groups to improve access and use of public entitlement schemes in India written by Kumar, Neha and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s self-help groups (SHGs) have increasingly been used as a vehicle for social, political, and economic empowerment as well as a platform for service delivery. Although a growing body of literature shows evidence of positive impacts of SHGs on various measures of empowerment, our understanding of ways in which SHGs improve awareness and use of public services is limited. To fill this knowledge gap, this paper first examines how SHG membership is associated with political participation, awareness, and use of government entitlement schemes. It further examines the effect of SHG membership on various measures of social networks and mobility. Using data collected in 2015 across five Indian states and matching methods to correct for endogeneity of SHG membership, we find that SHG members are more politically engaged. We also find that SHG members are not only more likely to know of certain public entitlements than non-members, they are significantly more likely to avail of a greater number of public entitlement schemes. Additionally, SHG members have wider social networks and greater mobility as compared to non-members. Our results suggest that SHGs have the potential to increase their members’ ability to hold public entities accountable and demand what is rightfully theirs. An important insight, however, is that the SHGs themselves cannot be expected to increase knowledge of public entitlement schemes in absence of a deliberate effort to do so by an external agency.

Book excerpt: The efforts made by the Indian development planners during the past decades are commendable in reducing poverty and other dimensions of human development. Book Poverty Alleviation Through Self Help Groups in Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh

Download or read book Poverty Alleviation Through Self Help Groups in Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh written by R. Neelaiah and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In developing economies and particularly in rural areas, many activities that would be classified in the developed world as financial are not monetized: That is, there is no money used to carry them out. This is often the case when people need the services money can provide but do not have dispensable funds required for those services, forcing them to revert to other means of acquiring them. People find creative and often collaborative ways to meet the needs, primarily through creating and exchanging different forms of non-cash value. Common substitutes for cash vary from country to country but typically include livestock, grains, jewelry and precious metals. In the 2000s, the micro finance industry’s objective is to satisfy the unmet demand on a much larger scale, and to play a role in reducing poverty. While much progress has been made in developing a viable commercial micro finance sector in the last few decades, several issues remain that need to be addressed before the industry will be able to satisfy massive worldwide demand.
