Book excerpt: La généralisation obligatoire de l'apprentissage-enseignement des langues étrangères à l'école primaire française a encouragé l'utilisation des TICE (Technologies de l'information et de la communication pour l'enseignement). Les supports multimédias offrent en effet de multiples possibilités aux apprenants et aux enseignants de langue étrangère : le contenu linguistique est accompagné de dessins, sons et animations proposés sous diverses combinaisons (présentation multimodale). Nous dresserons tout d'abord un état des lieux du contexte institutionnel et didactique de cette nouvelle discipline. Ce cadrage nous conduira ensuite à considérer la place de l'outil multimédia pour évaluer ce qu'il peut apporter à l'apprentissage du vocabulaire en langue étrangère, un des principaux objectifs dans cet apprentissage-enseignement présecondaire. Nous nous interrogeons en effet sur l'aide que constituent les différentes modalités d'encodage concourrant à la compréhension en langue en termes de représentation des objets du monde (Dubois) et de coût cognitif de traitement de l'information nouvelle (Sweller). Nos analyses descriptives se fondent sur notre propre expérience de professeure des écoles (depuis 1997) et d'enseignante de l'italien à des enfants de cycle 3 (8 à 11 ans). Ces analyses conduisent à plusieurs interrogations concernant : a) l'acquisition de la langue première (L1 = français) au cours du développement de l'enfant ; b) l'apprentissage des langues étrangères (L2) ; et c) les effets de la présentation multimodale du lexique en langue étrangère (L2 = anglais) sur la mémorisation. Ce dernier point nous a permis de formuler des hypothèses. Celles-ci ont été testées par des expérimentations réalisées auprès d'élèves de cycle 3 (8 à 11 ans) où les diverses combinaisons des modalités d'encodage (oral / écrit / oral et écrit / oral puis écrit) représentent les variables dont les effets sont observés sur la mémorisation (tests de désignation puis de restitution). Ces expériences ont pris place au sein d'une équipe de recherche financée par la région Midi-Pyrénées.

Book excerpt: Ce travail est une contribution théorique et méthodologique à l'enseignement précoce des langues et en particulier à l'utilisation de l'image (filmique et fixe) pour favoriser cet apprentissage à l'école chez des enfants de moins de 11 ans. La connaissance de l'enfant dans les divers aspects de son développement langagier, cognitif, affectif et social, à travers l'apport de théories linguistiques et psychologiques, nous a amenée à nous interroger sur le sens que revêt la langue étrangère pour lui. La recherche a ainsi mis en évidence la nécessité d'organiser l'enseignement précoce à partir d'outils spécifiques permettant de créer une médiation en classe, c'est-à-dire de mettre en relation l'enfant avec la réalité de la langue étrangère. L'image, dans son rapport au sens et au langage et grâce à son potentiel d'évocation a, dans ce cadre, un rôle essentiel à jouer. Notre approche sémiotique et linguistique propose, par conséquent, de considérer l'image dans ses aspects techniques (le media), formels (son " enveloppe " esthétique) et informationnels (contenus thématiques et linguistiques) afin de déterminer les critères de sa fabrication ou de sa sélection à des fins d'utilisation didactique. Notre étude s'appuie sur l'analyse du matériel expérimental que nous avons élaboré pour l'enseignement du FLE. Elle montre comment l'articulation de supports image différents permet, sous une forme ludique et créative, de mettre en rapport des éléments linguistiques avec des éléments plastiques et iconiques. L'observation de l'utilisation de ces outils dans des classes d'écoles maternelles et élémentaires en Italie a conforté nos hypothèses sur l'adaptation de ce type de matériel au public enfantin et à l'apprentissage de la langue. Notre recherche a aussi confirmé la nécessité de tenir compte du rôle majeur de l'enseignant dans la mise en œuvre de la rencontre entre l'enfant et la langue étrangère à l'école.
