Download or read book Iznik Pottery written by John Carswell and published by British Museum Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Turkish pottery at Iznik, ancient Nicaea, supplied the Ottoman court with luxurious vessels and splendid tiles to decorate newly founded palaces, mosques and other buildings. One of the great glories of Ottoman art at its peak period, the designs combine purely Turkish motifs with elements ingeniously transposed from imported Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. Over time, a subtle and complex palette was introduced, of cobalt blue, turquoise, olive green, magenta and grey. During the second half of the sixteenth century, the brilliant combination of blue, viridian, turquoise and a relief red resembling sealing-wax was introduced, not only for pottery by also for tiles such as the great series that line the interior of the mosque of Rustem Pasha, Grand Vizier of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, in Istanbul. Iznik pottery was much prized outside the Ottoman empire, and many examples have English and European seventeenth-century silver-gilt mounts. Although the Iznik factories passed their peak in the late seventeenth century, their influence lived on in nineteenth-century European imitations by such potters as William De Morgan and Cantagalli. Most of the examples illustrated are drawn from the British Museum, acknowledged to have the greatest collection of Iznik in the world, including the famous Godman Bequest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of art history’s previously overlooked treasures—the vibrant ceramic tiles of Syria and especially Damascus—are the subject of this fascinating study by a leading Islamic art expert. Architectural ceramic decoration is one of the most celebrated manifestations of the arts of Islam. Spanning a period from the 13th to the 20th century, the tiles featured in this book exhibit a rich range of influences from Persia, Turkey, China and even Europe. A renowned specialist in the fields of Islamic and Indian art, Arthur Millner explores the historical context that allowed the uniquely creative achievement of Syrian craftsmen to flourish, and why tiles from this region are less restricted in artistic expression than those from better-known centers of production. The complex and interconnected nature of tile designs, techniques and color palettes is explored, highlighting what is distinctive about Damascus ceramics and how they relate to tiles produced in other parts of the Islamic world. Finally, the author traces the journey made by many of these tiles to the West, embellishing the interiors of wealthy clients as Islamic art became both fashionable and influential in late-19thcentury art and design.

"This publication is based on a selection of eighty representative objects from the various periods of production spanning the start of the 16th century up until the industry's decline in the 17th century. After a brief history of the collection, the first part introduces the various types of ware according to their decoration, in a broadly chronological order. The second part, which is dedicated to tiles, deals with large panels, frieze and border tiles, most of which are on permanent display in the Museum." "Calouste Gulbenkian's first contact with Ottoman ceramics, which coincided with the beginning of his career as a collector, took place in 1898 when he bought four Iznik fritware dishes at Christie's in London, two of which are of the highest quality, decorated over a scale background. Over the following forty years, Gulbenkian steadily collected the remaining pieces making up this important group, which also includes the magnificent ceramic tile panels." --Book Jacket.
