Book Pottery Made Easy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pottery Made Easy Classic Reprint written by John Wolfe Dougherty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pottery Made Easy This book is the result of fifteen years of work and experimentation with instructional material in ceramics in the industrial-arts depart ment of Oakwood High School, in Oakwood, a suburb of Dayton, Ohio. It comprises instruction sheets on pottery, intended for junior or senior-high-school levels, which conform to modern educational principles, and are so systematized and simplified as to be suitable either in the classroom or for the self-instruction of the more mature who wish to become acquainted with this fascinating craft. Pottery is becoming more popular every year, both as a hobby and as a unit in the industrial-arts program. This growth finds justification in many ways. Being perhaps the oldest of the arts, pottery has played and continues to play a very important part in our everyday life. Its interests are broad and varied. It includes the historical, the ethmo graphic, the artistic, and the technical. In it are combined the skills of the craftsman, the artist, and the scientist, for the true potter must possess deft hands, know design, and be something of a chemist, a geologist, and a physicist. It has been said that pottery records the touch and the feeling of the worker better than can be done in most other crafts, and that it carries art into the common things of life, combining the useful with the beautiful. It is an activity in which art and skill are everything - the material nothing. It is a craft in which creative work can be made most enduring. It Widens the viewpoint of the student, and allows him to explore further into the field of industrial activity. It affords interesting opportunities for art training in several wholly different types of decoration, and provides a leisure-time hobby of absorbing interest. Download or read book How to Make Pottery Classic Reprint written by Mary White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make Pottery AN art like pottery-making, which is nearly as old as the human race, is naturally approached with some degree of reverence. One thinks of its old masters in various lands and ages - how they were content to spend a lifetime in the study and practice of it. There is, however, another thought that comes to mind - that this art, like every other, had to have its beginning. Moreover, every potter, from the primitive man who first realised that clay which held water could be moulded into portable vessels for a like purpose, to the artist potter of to-day, has learned the first steps of the craft. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pottery Primer Let us first try to understand some of the more common terms in general use. First of all comes pottery. There is a regretably restricted use of this word, and it is generally applied to ware that is opaque, as if that was its sole meaning. It has a much broader significance and is properly applied to any article made of clay and fired, whether a common sewer pipe or one of those dainty Japanese pieces of but little more than egg shell thickness and so translucent as to be almost transparent. Do not confound these two words, for there is no such thing as trans parent pottery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
