FULHAM. The honour is claimed for Fulham of the first discovery of porcelain-making in England. John Dwight, a man of considerable learning, obtained a patent in 1671 from Charles II. for the manufacture of transparent porcellane. His ware. however, was not a true porcelain, but only a semi-translucent earthenware. He also made some excellent imitations of the German grey stoneware which, up to his time, had been largely imported from Cologne. Fulham stoneware was not confined to articles of domestic use, but statuettes, busts, and fancy figures were also produced. In the South Kensington Museum is a beautiful half-length figure of a dead child, inscribed, Lydia Dwight, died March 3, 1673. i58 FUNFKIRCHEN--FURSTENBURG The bust of Prince Rupert and statuette of Meleager in the British Museum are also excellent specimens of Fulham stoneware, and there are several examples in the Jermyn Street Museum. As regards the stoneware jugs and pots, it is in many cases difficult to decide between the claims of Fulham and some of the German factories. One has to be guided by the character of the decoration, the nationality of the coat of arms or device, and the language of the motto or legend, if there be one. The works were carried on by Dwight's descendants until 1862, when Messrs. Macintosh & Clements became the proprietors. In 1864 this firm was succeeded by Mr. C. T. C. Bailey, who greatly improved and enlarged the manufactory. It is now carried on by a limited company. In 1888 Mr. William de Morgan opened a factory here (see De Morgan). FONFKIRCHEN, Hungary. A modern factory of faience has been established here by W. Zsolnay; the ware is well decorated with floral scrolls. Mark as in the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pottery Porcelain: A Guide to Collectors In preparing Pottery and Porcelain for a new edition, I have endeavored to make such improvements as will afford additional help to the inexperienced collector. The chapter on "Hints and Cautions," which has gained approval in many quarters, is enlarged, and should now be more effective in safeguarding the reader against errors and disappointments. A new chapter on "Values and Prices" has been added, with information which should be of some interest and service. Several of the notices on ceramic factories have been rewritten, and many new ones added, together with marks rewritten, and many new ones added, together with marks and fresh information. The list of Sevres decorators has been rendered more complete by the addition of some sixty-five names and signs, while the other soft-paste factories have received more attention than in previous editions. The illustrations have been reconsidered; unsatisfactory ones replaced, and several fresh ones, including three new coloured plates, added. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features photographs of marks alongside their actual pieces for perspective. Over 7,500 photographs of around 4,000 marks and items, from Abingdon to Zsolnay, are featured in this huge publication. Organized alphabetically by company, this book is the most user-friendly marks book you'll find, telling readers quickly what it looks like, when it was made, and who made it. Appraisers and dealers will find this guide extremely useful; they can learn a little bit about many different marks, rather than having to weed through extensive historical information on the thousands of marks produced. As an added feature, cross-referencing indexes are provided, by date, shape, and company. 2004 values.

Book Collector s Guide to Buying Antique Pottery Porcelain

Download or read book Collector s Guide to Buying Antique Pottery Porcelain written by Rachael Feild and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of antique pottery and porcelain is a favourite hunting ground for collectors, but English ceramics is a complicated subject, and the division into pottery and porcelain is almost arbitrary with few clear-cut distinctions. Many shapes have been made in different kinds of paste and body, and similar patterns have been used on a great variety of products. So how does a dealer assess the quality and value of a piece? What are the most desirable and collectable pieces? The rarest? The most sought-after at today's market prices? And when is it worth buying a piece that is chipped or cracked? This guide aims to provide the answers and is designed to show quickly and clearly the difference between pottery and porcelain and to give all the essential information on the key pieces made over the centuries.
