Book Chickens in the Road

Download or read book Chickens in the Road written by Suzanne McMinn and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suzanne McMinn, a former romance writer and founder of the popular blog chickensintheroad.com, shares the story of her search to lead a life of ordinary splendor in Chickens in the Road, her inspiring and funny memoir. Craving a life that would connect her to the earth and her family roots, McMinn packed up her three kids, left her husband and her sterile suburban existence behind, and moved to rural West Virginia. Amid the rough landscape and beauty of this rural mountain country, she pursues a natural lifestyle filled with chickens, goats, sheep—and no pizza delivery. With her new life comes an unexpected new love—"52," a man as beguiling and enigmatic as his nickname—a turbulent romance that reminds her that peace and fulfillment can be found in the wake of heartbreak. Coping with formidable challenges, including raising a trio of teenagers, milking stubborn cows, being snowed in with no heat, and making her own butter, McMinn realizes that she’s living a forty-something’s coming-of-age story. As she dares to become self-reliant and embrace her independence, she reminds us that life is a bold adventure—if we’re willing to live it. Chickens in the Road includes more than 20 recipes, craft projects, and McMinn’s photography, and features a special two-color design.

Book Field Flower Vase

Download or read book Field Flower Vase written by Chelsea Fuss and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floral expert Chelsea Fuss shows you how to make beautiful, natural arrangements with foraged and seasonal greenery, branches, and flowers Based on her extraordinarily popular flower-arranging workshops, Chelsea Fuss’s first book combines an alluring sense of place with everything readers need to know to forage, gather, and arrange fresh and dried botanicals. Each arrangement is addictively easy to make, and the featured centerpieces, wreaths, garlands, and bouquets are designed to bring the perfect amount of scent, color, and atmosphere to a room. The book features 28 eco-friendly floral projects, all using natural materials in lieu of floral foam and wire. Each arrangement is accompanied by foraging tips that can be applied to different locales. Photographed in the author’s small village in Portugal, the book overflows with atmospheric images of flowers and foliage in the landscape to inspire readers to walk local trails (even if that just means the stalls of a city market) and gather ingredients in a pastime that is as much self-care and meditation as it is a practical pursuit.

  • Author : Rosalind Batterbee Bundy Westcott
  • Publisher : Ginger Marks

Download or read book Pioneer Potpourri written by Rosalind Batterbee Bundy Westcott and published by Ginger Marks. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Made in Mexico" examines the aesthetic, political, and sociopolitical aspects of tourism in southern Mexico, particularly in the state of Oaxaca. Tourists seeking "authenticity" buy crafts and festival tickets and spend even more on travel expenses. What does a craft object or a festival moment need to look like or sound like to please both tradition bearers and tourists in terms of aesthetics? Under what conditions are transactions between these parties psychologically healthy and sustainable? What political factors can interfere with the success of this negotiation, and what happens when the process breaks down? With Subcommandante Marcos and the Zapatistas still operating in neighboring Chiapas and unrest on the rise in Oaxaca itself, these are not merely theoretical problems. Chris Goertzen analyzes the nature and meaning of a single craft object, a woven pillowcase from Chiapas, thus previewing what the book will accomplish in greater depth in Oaxaca. He introduces the book's guiding concepts, especially concerning the types of aesthetic intensification that have replaced fading cultural contexts, and the tragic partnership between ethnic distinctiveness and oppressive politics. He then brings these concepts to bear on crafts in Oaxaca and on Oaxaca's Guelaguetza, the anchor for tourism in the state and a festival with an increasingly contested meaning.
