Book excerpt: Kabir Das was a 15th century mystic, saint and poet of India who happened to be one of the fore-runners and a strong supporter of a religious-cum-spiritual renaissance, the 'Bhakti Movement'. It was an uprising against the rigid manifestation of dogmas and rituals among Hindus as well as oppression at the hands of Muslim rulers in the name of religion. They filled the Indian sacred hearts with doom and dread. Though all the poet-mystics of the time loved God in their own ways, Kabir worshipped, loved and venerated the Supreme-energy manifest as the primordial, formless, pure and the pristine. His verses show a spirit closer and akin to that of Sufis. Though lovelorn, Kabir was far from roaming among the clouds. He stood vociferously against the inane precepts and insane customs of his time involving merciless killings in the name of sacrifice. He also lashed back at the causeless and stupid conflicts between different religions and sects. Kabir's mission lay in equating Ram with Rahim and bridging the gap between the two. His couplets came to be known down generations orally. They were later compiled in a book form called Bijak. In spite of him never holding a paper or pen all his life, his verses have regaled and enthralled Indian Hindi-knowing readers down the centuries and are often recited, sung and quoted to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innumerable systems of worships are prevalent these days, instead of one prescribed system of attainment of One God propounded by the Geeta and other scriptures on Yoga. Some might say worshipping the cow is true religion (gau-dharma), whereas according to others Peepal tree (a holy tree) could be true religion (Dharma); while some other might exhort the importance of caste-system (varna) and ashrams. Hence, ‘what is a true Universal Religion’ is the question, baffles many a minds. The question today is similar as ‘Who is our God? Who should be worshipped?’ This is the primary book on the path of worship and spiritual path. Must read.

Book Uttam Kumar

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sayandeb Chowdhury
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2021-12-30
  • ISBN : 9354352715
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Uttam Kumar written by Sayandeb Chowdhury and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'There is none like Uttam and there will be no one to ever replace him. He was and he is unparalleled in Bengali, even Indian cinema.'-Satyajit Ray, Oscar-winning Indian film-maker Actor and screen icon Uttam Kumar (1926–1980) is a talismanic figure in Bengali public life. Breaking away from established codes of onscreen performance, he came to anchor an entire industry and led the efforts to reimagine popular cinema in mid-20th-century Bengal. But there is pitifully less knowledge about Uttam Kumar in the learned circles-be it about his range of style and performance; the attractions and problems of his cinema; his roles as a producer and patriarch of the industry; or his persona, stardom and legacy. The first definitive cultural and critical biography of this larger-than-life figure engages meaningfully with his life and cinema, revealing the man, hero and actor from various, often competing, vantages. The conceptual aim is to locate a star figure within a larger historical and cultural context, and to enquire into how a towering image was mobilised for an ever-greater, wholesome, popular and even, at times, radical and progressive entertainment. A complimentary métier of this work is to explore why and how this star persona would go on to reconstitute the bhadrolok Bengali visual and cultural world in the post-Partition period. But above all, this is the story of a clerk who became an actor, an actor who became a star, a star who became an icon and an icon who became a legend.
