Book Pathways Potholes and the Persistence of Women in Science

Download or read book Pathways Potholes and the Persistence of Women in Science written by Enobong Hannah Branch and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Training for and pursuing a career in science can be treacherous for women; many more begin than ultimately complete at every stage. Characterizing this as a pipeline problem, however, leads to a focus on individual women instead of structural conditions. The goal of the book is to offer an alternative model that better articulates the ideas of agency, constraint, and variability along the path to scientific careers for women. The chapters in this volume apply the metaphor of the road to a variety of fields and moments that are characterized as exits, pathways, and potholes. The scholars featured in this volume engaged purposefully in translation of sociological scholarship on gender, work, and organizations. They focus on the themes that emerge from their scholarship that add to or build on our existing knowledge of scientific work, while identifying tools as well as challenges to diversifying science. This book contains a multitude of insights about navigating the road while training for and building a career in science. Collectively, the chapters exemplify the utility of this approach, provide useful tools, and suggest areas of exploration for those aiming to broaden the participation of women and minorities. Although this book focuses on gendered constraints, we are attentive to fact that gender intersects with other identities, such as race/ethnicity and nativity, both of which influence participation in science. Several chapters in the volume speak clearly to the experience of underrepresented minorities in science and others consider the circumstances and integration of non-U.S. born scientists, referred to in this volume as international scientists. Disaggregating gender deepens our understanding and illustrates how identity shapes the contours of the scientific road.

Book excerpt: Education has been increasingly lauded as the path to achieving the American Dream, and in this book Martín Sánchez-Jankowski uses extensive ethnographic research to explore the dynamics of the interrelated barriers that low-income students must surpass in order to make transitions successfully from high school to college. With rigor and compassion, and engaging in participant observation to examine how individual students confront the education system, Potholes in the Road shows how obstacles related to issues of structure, culture, and agency make achieving the American Dream through education particularly challenging.

Book excerpt: Potholes in my lawn: "the book" finally... was inspired by the wonderful children I had the honor of producing 50 minute groups for, for the last five years of my life. The 50 minute therapeutic groups were supposed to be quick, brief and to the point, discussing the client's day to day feelings, but of course things like that get dull quickly for young troubled youth (behaviorally and emotionally) and for the child at heart therapist who's in charge of planning, running and illustrating the groups. Over the course of the last five years I have planned, implemented and conducted over 700 groups and some were beautiful, some confusing but all were fun and a learning experience. As time passed my understanding of a troubled youth's wants and needs became more understandable. Finally I understood rarely does a child want to discuss problems on a Monday morning, they would much rather talk about their weekend and how much fun it was or should have been, rarely does a child want to hug and greet a person whom he or she just met. I learned through the course of time, that yes they want the world to know that they have been hurt, betrayed, misunderstood, misguided, but that they still want love. They want to drive over and pass their potholes on the road to success. Over the last five years I've learned enough to write ten books or more on giving therapeutic groups alone, but instead I settled on giving you 182 of the best, most favorite and most needed groups for a complete school year (of an average 182 day school year), but the groups where designed to be used at any setting/place for the help and assistance with adolescents and teens. Many of the most prized groups I thought of keeping a secret from the rest of the world, but then thought if the groups were that much of a benefit for the CARE clients/children that maybe they could possibly aid and assist the other million plus troubled youth of the world and the facilitators that sometimes run out of ideas like I did on many occasions. The groups of "potholes in my lawn": were not only rated the best and most favorite from the clients, but through therapeutic observations of the 700 groups, the groups that were presented were the most effective in helping to change lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognize Wall Street tactics for what they are, and make smarter decisions with your money Wall Street Potholes shares insights into the money management industry, revealing the shady practices that benefit the salesman far more than the client. Bestselling author Simon Lack brings together a team of experienced money managers to give you straight-from-the-source intel, and teach you how to recognize bad advice and when it's better to just walk away. Investors are rightly suspicious that many products are sold more because of the fees they generate than their appropriateness to the client's situation, and that's only the beginning. This book lays it all bare so you can walk into your next deal with your eyes wide open. For all the volumes of investment advice on the market, dissatisfaction with the financial services industry has never been higher. This book describes the reason for that disconnect, and tells you how to see through the smoke and mirrors to make the best decisions for your money. Discover the profit margin built into some popular products Learn the reason behind bundling and why Wall Street fears comparison shopping Consider the importance of benchmarking, and why so many firms avoid it Become better informed so you can easily recognize poor investment advice If asking questions of your financial advisor only nets more confusion, if you want to have more control over your money, you need a firm grasp of how these firms manipulate your trust. Wall Street Potholes tells you what you need to know to become a smarter investor.
