Book Fighting Poverty in Sub Saharan Africa The Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management

Download or read book Fighting Poverty in Sub Saharan Africa The Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management written by Andre Bationo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legumes play an important role in the cropping systems of sub Saharan Africa (SSA). Legumes are an important source of nutrition to both humans and livestock by providing the much needed protein, minerals, fibre and vitamins. The sale of legumes seed, leaves and fibre generates income for the marginalized communities especially women. Cultivation of legumes is essential for the regeneration of nutrient-deficient soils. By biologically fixing nitrogen (BNF) in the soil, legumes provide a relatively low-cost method of replacing otherwise expensive inorganic nitrogen in the soil. This enhances soil fertility and boosts subsequent cereal crop yields. Production of legumes in SSA is however; hampered by a number of constraints among them low and declining soil fertility, low soil pH, high salinity, drought and flooding, poor access to improved germplasm, diseases, pests and weeds. Farmers need to learn how to overcome these constraints if the full benefits of legumes are to be gained. This book presents a synthesis of research work on legumes and draws attention to the importance of legumes in integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) and poverty alleviation in SSA.

Book Pulse crops for sustainable farms in sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Pulse crops for sustainable farms in sub Saharan Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulses have a long history in sub-Saharan Africa due to their multiple benefits. Pulses, and legumes in general, can play an important role in agriculture because of their ability to biologically fix atmospheric nitrogen and to enhance the biological turnover of phosphorus; thus they could become the cornerstone of sustainable agriculture in Africa. In this sense, there is a body of literature that points to diversification of existing production systems – particularly legumes species, which provide critical environmental services, including soil erosion control and soil nutrient recapitalization. This publication is a review of some of the promising strategies to support the cultivation and utilization of pulses on smallholder farms in sub-Saharan Africa. The review is part of the legacy of the International Year of Pulses (IYP), which sought to recognize the contribution that pulses make to human well-being and the environment.

Book Tropical Forage Legumes

Download or read book Tropical Forage Legumes written by John R Lazier and published by CABI. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of legume use in agricultural production in the tropics lags far behind the temperate areas and extensive research over recent decades has aimed to rectify the lack of available leguminous fodder species available for heavy clay soils. This book draws together that research and explores the importance of heavy clay soils to agricultural productivity in the tropics and subtropics and the identification of adapted, productive forage legumes for these environments. Providing an invaluable example of how a global search for adapted and productive forage germplasm has been - and can be - undertaken, and allowing access to a significant body of knowledge that was acquired before the digitalization of reports, this book will be a key resource for new scientists and experienced researchers in the areas of agriculture and forage agronomy.

Book Evaluation of Forage Legumes for Soil Fertility Improvement in Maize Cassava Production Systems

Download or read book Evaluation of Forage Legumes for Soil Fertility Improvement in Maize Cassava Production Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil fertility decline is a major factor limiting crop production in smallholder farms in sub-Saharan Africa. Coastal Kenya farmers are aware of the problem of declining soil fertility caused by continuous cropping without returning nutrients, soil erosion, burning of plant residues, and short fallow intervals in food crops production. This research examined intercropping of forage legumes as potential nutrient sources in maize and cassava production systems. The overall objective was to study the effects of harvest frequency and developmental stage at harvest of an annual (dolichos) and perennial (clitoria) forage legume on: i) biomass and nutrient accumulation ii) rate of nutrient release from the respective legume residues, and iii) availability of residue derived nutrients to maize and/ or cassava. The design for the experiments was a split-plot with five replications, consisting of cropping system (main plot) and harvest management (subplot) factors. Main plot treatments were clitoria or dolichos grown as monocultures or as an intercrops with two tropical food crops (cassava and maize). Clitoria was first cut at 2 mo after planting, and subsequently every 6 or 10 wk after the first cut, while dolichos was cut at 2 and 4 mo after planting the legume. The harvested foliage was applied as surface mulch. A third experiment monitored the decomposition and nutrient release from clitoria and dolichos residues. Following each legume harvest, three replicates of nylon mesh bags containing legume residue as intact plants were placed on the ground surface within their respective cropping system and legume management plots, and then retrieved at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 wk in the field. Nonlinear regression equations for percentage of original dry weight, N, P, K, Ca, and Mg remaining at each retrieval date were determined by cropping system and legume cutting strategy and data was fit to single, double, and asymptotic models of NLIN procedure. Results from the maize/cassava p.
