  • Author : K.L. Mittal
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 148990879X
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Metallized Plastics 1 written by K.L. Mittal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume chronicles the proceedings of the Symposium on Metallized Plastics: Fundamental and Applied Aspects held under the auspices of the Dielectrics and Insulation Division of the Electrochemical Society in Chicago, October 10-12, 1988. This was the premier symposium on this topic and if the comments from the attendees are any barometer of the success of a symposium then it was a grand success. Concomitantly, it has been decided to hold it on a regular basis (at intervals of 18 months) and the second event in this series is planned as a part of the Electrochemical Society meeting in Montreal, Canada, May 6-10, 1990. Metallized plastics find a legion of applications ranging from mundane to very sophisticated. A complete catalog of the various technological applications of metallized plastics will be prohibitively long, so here some eclectic examples should suffice to show why there is such high tempo of R&D activity in the arena of metallized plastics, and all signals indicate that this high tempo will continue unabated. For example, polymeric films are metallized for packaging (food and other products) purposes, and the applications of metallized plastics in the automotive industry are quite obvious. In the field of microelectronics and computer technology, insulators are metallized for interconnection and other functional purposes. Also plastics are metallized to provide electromagnetic shielding.

Download or read book Oxygen and Ozone written by Rubin Battino and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxygen and Ozone deals with the solubility of oxygen and ozone in pure liquids, liquid mixtures, aqueous and organic solutions, biological fluids, and some miscellaneous solvents and mixtures. The coverage is on gas/liquid systems at high and low pressures. Individual data sheets for each gas/liquid system are included. This volume consists of three sections and begins with an introduction to the solubility of gases in liquids, with emphasis on the solubility of oxygen in water at atmospheric pressure. Oxygen solubilities up to and above 200 kPa (2 bar) in media such as water, hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and biological and miscellaneous fluids are presented. The overall mechanism of ozone decomposition in aqueous systems is then discussed, along with the steps involved in the gas-liquid equilibrium. An experimental approach for determining the solubility of ozone in aqueous systems in which significant decomposition occurs is also described. This book will be a valuable source of information for chemists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One common feature of new emerging technologies is the fusion of the very small (nano) scale and the large scale engineering. The classical environment provided by single scale theories, as for instance by the classical hydrodynamics, is not anymore satisfactory. The main challenge is to keep the important details while still be able to keep the overall picture and simplicity. It is the thermodynamics that addresses this challenge. Our main reason for writing this book is to explain such general viewpoint of thermodynamics and to illustrate it on a very wide range of examples. Book Corrosion and Electrochemistry of Zinc

Download or read book Corrosion and Electrochemistry of Zinc written by Xiaoge Gregory Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humankind's use of zinc stretches back to antiquity, and it was a component in some of the earliest known alloy systems. Even though metallic zinc was not "discovered" in Europe until 1746 (by Marggral), zinc ores were used for making brass in biblical times, and an 87% zinc alloy was found in prehistoric ruins in Transylvania. Also, zinc (the metal) was produced in quantity in India as far back as the thirteenth century, well before it was recognized as being a separate element. The uses of zinc are manifold, ranging from galvanizing to die castings to electronics. It is a preferred anode material in high-energy-density batteries (e.g., Ni/Zn, Ag/Zn, ZnJair), so that its electrochemistry, particularly in alkaline media, has been extensively explored. In the passive state, zinc is photoelectrochemically active, with the passive film displaying n-type characteristics. For the same reason that zinc is considered to be an excellent battery anode, it has found extensive use as a sacrificial anode for the protection of ships and pipelines from corrosion. Indeed, aside from zinc's well-known attributes as an alloying element, its widespread use is principally due to its electrochemical properties, which include a well-placed position in the galvanic series for protecting iron and steel in natural aqueous environments and its reversible dissolution behavior in alkaline solutions.

Book Statistical Physics II

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. Kubo
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642967019
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Statistical Physics II written by R. Kubo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Statistical Physics consititutes the second part of Statistical Physics (Springer Series in Solid-State Science, Vols. 30, 31) and is devoted to nonequilibrium theories of statistical mechanics. We start with an intro duction to the stochastic treatment of Brownian motion and then proceed to general problems involved in deriving a physical process from an underlying more basic process. Relaxation from nonequilibrium to equilibrium states and the response of a system to an external disturbance form the central problems of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. These problems are treated both phenomenologically and microscopically along the lines of re cent developments. Emphasis is placed on fundamental concepts and methods rather than on applications which are too numerous to be treated exhaustively within the limited space of this volume. For information on the general aim of this book, the reader is referred to the Foreword. For further reading, the reader should consult the bibliographies, although these are not meant to be exhaustive.

Book Graham s Electroplating Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Graham s Electroplating Engineering Handbook written by L.J. Durney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1984-11-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an instructor in various finishing courses, I have frequently made the statement over the years that "In the field of metal finishing there is very little black and white, just a great deal of grey. It is the purpose of the instructor to familiarize the student with the beacons that will guide him through this fog. " To a very considerable extent, a handbook such as this serves a similar purpose. It is also subject to similar limitations. Providing all the required information would result in a multi-volume encyclopedia rather than a usable handbook. In the pages that follow, you will therefore find frequent references to other sources where more detailed explanations or information can be found. The present goal is proper guidance and the provision ofthe most frequently required facts, not everything that is available. In the 13 years since the last edition, changes in the finishing industry have been profound but in one sense have resulted in simplifying matters rather than complicating them. Because technology has advanced to a level of complexity rendering "home brew" impracti cal in many cases, dependence on proprietary compounds has become common. Therefore, detailed solution compositions are often no longer significant or even practical. It is thus more important to provide instruction about the factors that affect the choice of the most suitable type of proprietary material.
