Book The Province of British Columbia s Perspective on the Federal Moratorium on Oil and Gas Activities Offshore British Columbia

Download or read book The Province of British Columbia s Perspective on the Federal Moratorium on Oil and Gas Activities Offshore British Columbia written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This submission presents the British Columbia government perspective on the federal moratorium on offshore oil & gas exploration & development, based on the view that a decision to lift the moratorium is a matter of policy (weighing public risks & benefits) rather than of science. It begins with a review of the context for offshore exploration & development: the importance of defining resource potential, the history of offshore-related activities in British Columbia, and future energy demand & supply. It then outlines provincial policy direction related to responsible development of offshore resources, the potential benefits of offshore oil & gas activity, and the scientific studies that have been undertaken on the potential impacts of offshore oil & gas activity. Finally, the submission sets out the provincial plan for ensuring scientifically sound & environmentally responsible offshore oil & gas activity, along with steps for plan implementation. Appendices include a chronology of offshore oil & gas activity in British Columbia, and a table showing key initiatives under strategic directions of the plan.

Book British Columbia Offshore Hydrocarbon Development

Download or read book British Columbia Offshore Hydrocarbon Development written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the report of a British Columbia committee appointed to advise on the following: the scientific & technological considerations relevant to offshore oil & gas exploration, development, & production; and further research that should be undertaken to advance the state of knowledge regarding these considerations. It first reviews the geological & oceanographic environment, the characteristics of British Columbia coastal conditions compared to other districts such as Alaska, government responsibilities related to offshore development, coastal marine ecosystems & protected areas, the marine ecology of the Queen Charlotte Basin, potential stresses on marine ecology from the oil & gas industry, and offshore engineering & technology. It then presents the committee's recommendations on such matters as research, regulatory matters, and offshore development strategies. The appendices contain background information on such subjects as hydrocarbon potential, geologic hazards, oceanography, sea birds, British Columbia offshore drilling history, the existing moratorium on offshore oil & gas activity, and offshore oil & gas approvals.

Book Environmental Review of Onshore Canadian Oil and Gas Drilling and Production Activities

Download or read book Environmental Review of Onshore Canadian Oil and Gas Drilling and Production Activities written by Canada. Environmental Protection Programs Directorate and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current and proposed Canadian onshore oil and gas drilling and production activities are reviewed with respect to their potential for environmental effects. Canadian petroleum geology and related hydrogeology are described to provide a framework for discussion of the impact of oil and gas drilling and recovery operations, including tar sands development, and waste disposal practices. Environmental legislation applicable to oil and gas industry activities is also reviewed. Major environmental concerns identified include the potential for soil and groundwater contamination by drilling fluids, solid wastes, chemical additives, oils and brines, produced sands, and liquid wastes. The potential for contamination depends on handling and disposal practices and the geologic and hydrogeologic characteristics of the drilling and production site. Although fairly comprehensive legislation is in place, its effectiveness in the long-term has not been assessed, and no specific legislation exists for in situ tar sands development. Areas where knowledge is lacking and research is required have been identified.

Book A Review of Models in Support of Oil and Gas Exploration Off the North Coast of British Columbia

Download or read book A Review of Models in Support of Oil and Gas Exploration Off the North Coast of British Columbia written by M. G. G. Foreman and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art review of numerical models that would be needed to address scientific and environmental issues related to removing the moratorium on offshore oil and gas exploration for the waters off northern British Columbia is presented. Specific recommendations are made for circulation, ecosystem, oil spill, and drilling mud models. Complementary needs for more observations to validate these models and for the development of both a high resolution surface wave model and a high resolution atmospheric model, are also foreseen. It is anticipated that these recommendations will be useful when future science programs related to oil and gas exploration are developed.
