Book excerpt: The European DayWater project has developed a prototype of an Adaptive Decision Support System (ADSS) related to urban stormwater pollution source control. The DayWater ADSS greatly facilitates decision-making for stormwater source control, which is currently impeded by the large number of stakeholders involved and by the necessary multidisciplinary knowledge. This book presents the results of this project, providing new insights into both technical and management issues. The main objectives of its technical chapters are pollution source control modelling, risk and impact assessment, and evaluation and comparison of best management practices. It also covers management aspects, such as the analysis of the decision-making processes in stormwater source control, at a European scale, and stormwater management strategies in general. The combination of scientific-technical and socio-managerial knowledge, with the strong cooperation of numerous end-users, reflects the innovative character of this book which includes actual applications of the ADSS prototype in significant case studies. DayWater: an Adaptive Decision Support System for Urban Stormwater Management contains 26 chapters collectively prepared by DayWater scientific partners and end-users associated with this European Research and Development project. It includes: A general presentation of the DayWater Adaptive Decision Support System (ADSS) structure and operation modes A detailed description of the major components of this ADSS prototype The assessment of its components in significant case studies in France, Germany and Sweden The proceedings of the International Conference on Decision Support Systems for Integrated Urban Water Management, held in Paris on 3-4 November 2005. The book presents the ADSS prototype including a combination of freely accessible on-line databases, guidance documents, “road maps” and modelling or multi-criteria analysis tools. As demonstrated in several significant case studies the challenge for stormwater managers is to make the benefits of urban stormwater management visible to society, resulting in active co-operation of a diversity of stakeholders. Only then, will sustainable management succeed. DayWater: an Adaptive Decision Support System for Urban Stormwater Management advances this cause of sustainable urban management through Urban stormwater management, and makes achievable (by means of risk and vulnerability tools which are included) the goal of integrated urban water management (IUWM).

Book excerpt: The idea of heritage as a “capital of irreplaceable cultural, social and economic value” was already present in the European Charter of the Architectural Heritage, adopted by the Council of Europe in 1975 (par.3). Today, this discourse is getting increasing attention on the research agenda. Some argue that, although heritage is always valued highly, the current interest in the impact of heritage is caused by the democratisation of heritage and the increased importance of heritage in today’s society. Others argue that a universal scarcity of funds for heritage management and conservation is the reason to give it its proper attention. Therefore, the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (University of Leuven) considered “Heritage Counts” a relevant and timely topic for its yearly international conference, the “thematic week”. This edition twins with the “Cultural Heritage Counts for Europe” project, funded by the EU Culture Programme. The opening day of the conference was co-organised by the lead partner of this project, EUROPA NOSTRA, and brought together European policymakers and international researchers involved in cultural heritage. This volume specifically reports on the lectures and fruitful debates on heritage impact during the 2015 thematic week. It was observed that evolutions in discourse and policy hold a significant prospect, which also entail an increasing demand for shared insights and formation. In response, this publication reflects on heritage impact by providing research, case studies and reflections that can serve as baseline records, guidance - and hopefully inspiration. The findings are subdivided in three main chapters: “Framing the paradigm”, “Impact assessments: research, methods and practice” and “Linking management, conservation and sustainable development”.

Book excerpt: Foregrounding an innovative and radical perspective on food planning, this book makes the case for an agroecological urbanism in which food is a key component in the reinvention of new and just social arrangements and ecological practices. Building on state-of-the-art and participatory research on farming, urbanism, food policy and advocacy in the field of food system transformation, this book changes the way food planning has been conceptualised to date and invites the reader to fully embrace the transformative potential of an agroecological perspective. Bringing in dialogue from both the rural and urban, the producer and consumer, this book challenges conventional approaches that see them as separate spheres, whose problems can only be solved by a reconnection. Instead, it argues for moving away from a ‘food-in-the-city’ approach towards an ‘urbanism’ perspective, in which the economic and spatial processes that currently drive urbanisation will be unpacked and dissected, and new strategies for changing those processes into more equal and just ones are put forward. Drawing on the nascent field of urban political agroecology, this text brings together: i) theoretical re-conceptualisations of urbanism in relation to food planning and the emergence of new agrarian questions, ii) critical analysis of experimental methodologies and performing arts for public dialogue, reflexivity and food sovereignty research, iii) experiences of resourceful land management, including urban land use and land tenure change, and iv) theoretical and practical exploration of post-capitalist economics that bring consumers and producers together to make the case for an agroecological urbanism. This Report is based on fourteen national reports commissioned 1997-1999 and includes information from other sources including the EU. Following the introduction, the report is in five chapters. Chapter 2 looks at basic theoretical issues such as the character of non-formal learning and the political implications of setting up systems in this area. Chapter 3 outlines initiatives and developments in the member states. Chapter 4 presents and discusses initiatives at the EU level, focusing on the white paper on teaching and learning and on experiences from the Leonardo da Vinci programme. Chapter 5 analyses the previous chapters and concluding remarks are presented in Chapter 6. The conclusion looks at why there has been a sudden burst of activity and interest in questions linked to non-formal learning and at how the positive elements of this activity can be supported.
