Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Physics of New Laser Sources", the twelfth course of the Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics, held under the supervision of the Quantum Electronics Division of the European Physical Society. The Institute was held at Centro "I Cappuccini" San Miniato, Tuscany, July 11-21, 1984. The Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics was started in 1970 with the aim of providing instruction for young researchers and advanced students already engaged in the area of quantum electronics or for those wishing to switch into this area after working previously in other areas. From the outset, the School has been under the direction of Prof. F. T. Arecchi, then at the University of Pavia, now at the University of Florence, and Dr. D. Roess of Heraeus, Hanau. In 1981, Prof. H. Walther, University of Munich and Max-Planck Institut fur Quantenoptik joined as co-director. Each year the Directors choose a subj~ct of particular interest, alternating fundamental topics with technological ones, and ask colleagues specifically competent in the chosen areas to take the scientific responsibility for that course.

The laser performance is projected to be substantially enhanced, the rf energy-recovery technique will be demonstrated, and FEL physics measurements will be expanded. The accelerator is now being tuned with very promising performance. The above experiments will be completed during the next year.

Resulting developments for potential medical use include eradication of viruses in blood banking, development of photoproducts for use in treatment of AIDS and cancer, photochemicals for non-thermal tissue welding, devices to augment thermal welding, systems for cartilage repair, combined wavelength lasers for tissue hemostasis and ablation, and a new family of photochemicals for use in tracking tumors and with potential as bonding agents in material science. Basic knowledge of laser-tissue interactions was developed.

Book excerpt: During the past year the Los Alamos free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator has demonstrated high peak and average power (10 MW and 6 kW), broad-wavelength tunability (9 to 35 .mu.m), and near-ideal optical quality (0.9 Strehl ratio). An electron energy-extraction efficiency of 1% was measured. The predicted production of synchrotron sidebands also was observed in the broadened optical spectrum. As shorter wavelengths and higher powers are pursued, higher currents with improved beam quality will be required. Advanced injectors and energy-recovery systems are being developed to meet these demands. 17 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

Book excerpt: The applications of ''streak systems'' that provide time-resolved diagnostic data for the Los Alamos free-electron laser energy recovery experiments have been extended in the last year. We have used these systems with time resolutions of 10 .mu.s, approx. 20 ps, and 2 to 8 ps to address both macropulse and micropulse issues. As one example, the time-dependent extraction efficiency behavior during the macropulse is presented. In addition, the effects on the electron micropulse temporal shape of several accelerator parameters have been studied. These results include the evidence of electron beam peak currents that approach 200 A.
