Missing for months after a tragic boating accident, William de Vallée, the superstar thriller writer, is pronounced dead. His oldest friend, Arthur Pfefferkorn, receives the news with an unsettling mix of grief and envy. A middle-aged college professor with long-dead literary aspirations, Pfefferkorn can’t help but feel outshone by his friend’s success—especially since he married the woman Pfefferkorn loved. But now Bill is gone, and Pfefferkorn is there to comfort Carlotta in her time of grief. Reconnecting with de Vallée’s widow makes more than one of his dreams come true . . . until it plunges him into a shadowy world of intrigue and double crosses, where no one can be trusted—and nothing can be taken seriously.

Book Pot Boiler

Download or read book Pot Boiler written by Liam Naston and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-07-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines and challenges some of the contemporary values and morality of love by chronicalling the love life of an ordinary young man from its uncertain roots through many experiences with women and other men towards happiness and understanding. In a light-hearted manner, it reviews love as it is actually experienced (and rarely recorded) by a man in his body, mind and spirit. The man in the story is ''ordinary'' because he believes that even though he has seen and experienced much magic, it is nothing beyond that which any other man can or will experience during the course of his life.

Book The Sound of Things Falling

Download or read book The Sound of Things Falling written by Juan Gabriel Vasquez and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * National Bestseller and winner of the 2014 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award * Hailed by Edmund White as "a brilliant new novel" on the cover of the New York Times Book Review * Lauded by Jonathan Franzen, E. L. Doctorow and many others From a global literary star comes a prize-winning tour de force – an intimate portrayal of the drug wars in Colombia. Juan Gabriel Vásquez has been hailed not only as one of South America’s greatest literary stars, but also as one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation. In this gorgeously wrought, award-winning novel, Vásquez confronts the history of his home country, Colombia. In the city of Bogotá, Antonio Yammara reads an article about a hippo that had escaped from a derelict zoo once owned by legendary Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. The article transports Antonio back to when the war between Escobar’s Medellín cartel and government forces played out violently in Colombia’s streets and in the skies above. Back then, Antonio witnessed a friend’s murder, an event that haunts him still. As he investigates, he discovers the many ways in which his own life and his friend’s family have been shaped by his country’s recent violent past. His journey leads him all the way back to the 1960s and a world on the brink of change: a time before narco-trafficking trapped a whole generation in a living nightmare. Vásquez is “one of the most original new voices of Latin American literature,” according to Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa, and The Sound of Things Falling is his most personal, most contemporary novel to date, a masterpiece that takes his writing—and will take his literary star—even higher.

Download or read book Potboilers written by Charles Marowitz and published by Marion Boyars Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sherlock's Last Case casts the usual characters in a farcical light by reducing Holmes's character almost entirely to arrogance and Watson's to submission. Though thriller elements are present, the focus is on parody and dark social satire. Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life is a comic Strindbergian marriage battle full of wonderful invective and genuine loathing. Clever Dick is a hilarious burlesque of an Agatha Christie mystery that has gotten tangled with an English knickers farce."--Description from www.amazon.com

Download or read book A Bloody Habit written by Eleanor Bourg Nicholson and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1900, the dawn of a new century. Even as the old Queen's health fails, Victorian Britain stands monumental and strong upon a mountain of technological, scientific, and intellectual progress. For John Kemp, a straight-forward, unimaginative London lawyer, life seems reassuringly predictable yet forward-leaning, that is, until a foray into the recently published sensationalist novel Dracula, united with a chance meeting with an eccentric Dominican friar, catapults him into a bizarre, violent, and unsettling series of events. As London is transfixed with terror at a bloody trail of murder and destruction, Kemp finds himself in its midst, besieged on all sides—in his friendships, as those close to him fall prey to vicious assault by an unknown assassin; in his deep attraction to an unconventional American heiress; and in his own professional respectability, for who can trust a lawyer who sees things which, by all sane reason, cannot exist? Can his mundane, sensible life—and his skeptical mind—withstand vampires? Can this everyday Englishman survive his encounter with perhaps an even more sinister threat—the white-robed Papists who claim to be vampire slayers?

Book Fenland Survey

  • Author : David Hall
  • Publisher : English Heritage Publishing
  • Release : 2014-02-15
  • ISBN : 1848021488

Download or read book Fenland Survey written by David Hall and published by English Heritage Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological surveys of the Fenland of eastern England were initiated in the 1930s after it became clear that centuries of drainage and cultivation had seriously reduced the archaeological deposits. These studies were among the first to take a multi-disciplinary aproach to archaeological work, and continued with new work in the 1980s when intensive surveys were made of the wetlands of Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. During the eight years of the Fenland Survey (1981-88), fieldworkers walked 250,000 hectares and initiated palaeoenvironemental investigations allied to a radiocarbon dating programme. At the end of the survey, in 1989-90, the survey results were evaluated and a programme of field investigations undertaken. This volume is a synopsis of that work. It provides an introduction to the traditional Fenland, as perceived by both ancient and modern geographers, explorers, and historians, and a summary of the complex environmental history of the region. It is presented broadly according to the traditional archaeological periods - Mesolithic to medieval - but it also provides an overview of cultural continuity and of the response to changing conditions over 6000 years of history. It concludes with some reflections on the present condition of the Fenland and the response of the archaeological community to the threats posted by recent agricultural and other practices.

Book False Positive the Quarantine Verses

Download or read book False Positive the Quarantine Verses written by Geoff Peterson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Book At War With Itself I had completed my earlier book, dotted the i’s and licked the stamps, and then... SOMETHING HAPPENED and there was nothing more to say. —geoff peterson False-Positive is an author’s kiss of death. Beginning in the silence that precedes thought, it slips between sleep and jolts of bad conscience. Comprised of fragments struggling to find a pulse, the work fails to achieve form. It will not gather or cohere. It cannot be satisfied. Peterson’s latest is the record of a book nearly aborted, as forlorn as a teddy bear in back of a stolen car, and best viewed as a cry from a rented room during the latest pandemic. Unearthed one day from layers of ash, it could prove to be as time sensitive as a doomsday document. Reader Comments These quarantine poems are parables about growing old and sick, while finding threads of hope in all leftover things...a teddy bear or the beads of a rosary. —Andy Vinca, student of Machado’s Compelling glimpses from inside the rabbit hole in which the poet awakens to a previous life and examines the missing pages that were omitted till he was ready to face them... Scraps of poems not made public but rather assembled by a family member or biographer as they disclose the man’s exit. —Rich Culbertson, Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Damn, he’s good! Any time I pick up his book I can open to any page and be restored to my senses. —Sharon Butler, artist
