Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potable Water: And the Relative Efficiency of Different Methods of Detecting Impurities The acknowledged fact that there is a possible difference between wholesome water and that which the chemist pronounces pure water, is a sufficient reason for publishing this essay in its present form. That it was prepared with much skill and care, is abundantly proven by the "Discussion" by eminent authorities of the essay when originally presented to the Institution of Civil Engineers, and which is also herewith presented. Book Water Purification Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Purification Classic Reprint written by Joseph W. Ellms and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water-Analysis: A Practical Treatise on the Examination of Potable Water The first edition of this book was published in the spring of the year 1868. The second edition was a reprint with some additional matter contributed by Chapman. The third' edition, brought out soon after the death of Chapman, was in many respects a new book. It appeared in the spring of 1874, and has been reproduced in successive editions ever since. With the tenth edition, which is now called for, the time has arrived for revising and recasting the book so as to embody the results of a very ripe experience. In 1868, as Chapman and myself wrote in our preface, this was the first book which had been published on Water Analyst's; and our task was rendered possible by the then recent discovery of that wonderful reaction whereby albumen and albuminoid substances were made to evolve ammonia in a powerfully oxidising solution. The ammonia so generated we named Albuminoid Ammonia, and the quantity of that ammonia is the measure of the potential albumen in drinking-water. On this basis we have built up water-analysis for general sanitary purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water We Drink: Giving an Account of the Impurities to Which It Is Liable, and the Best Methods of Removing Them I. Mineral Mums - This may exist either in sus pension or solution. It is said to be in suspension when it is not dissolved. But is diffused through the water in very fine powder. Clay and very line sand are good examples of this impurity. Some of these substances are very easily removed. Even by paper. Sponge and sand filters, but in many cases. As, for ex ample, the clays which defile the waters of the Missis sippi, the Missouri. Rio Grande. Etc., they defy all the filters in common use with a single exception. When mineral matter. As, for example. Common salt. Is dis solved in the water, it cannot be removed by any me chanical filter. A large bed of sand will remove some of it; but a filter of sand, to be efficient, must be so large as to be impracticable. And even that soon takes up all it can hold. After which it allows the water to carry through it all the salts without diminution. All spring and river water contains more or less matter in solution, but it is only when this is in excess that it be comes injurious. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Water Testing Natural water is never found pure. Rain water is the purest natural water. As the rain falls it washes the gases and dust from the air. Upon striking the ground, it takes up impurities from the soil, the rocks and plants. Part of the Water flows on [the surface, absorbing more impurities. On filtering through the ground, the water loses most of its organic impurities which were absorbed from vegetable and animal de posits on the surface. As it does this, however, it also dissolves and absorbs mineral matter and gases. Since all boiler feed - water must necessarily con tain these impurities to, a greater or lesser extent, the engineer must know how to avoid same, and this book will tell you in a clear and practical way how to do it. It explains it all so clearly that you can analyze the water yourself, and be able to adopt proper remedies for counteracting the ill effects of such impurities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscopical Examination of Potable Water The publishers of the science series having asked the writer to prepare a monograph on the Microscopical Examination of Potable Water, I will endeavor to comply; though that a civil engi neer should be expected to prepare anything of value on a subject which has engaged the attention of the most eminent chemists and biologists is something of a surprise. Possibly, however, the fact that studies in this direction have occupied my leisure hours for a number of years, and have led to the production of a number of more or less useful papers thereon, may be to some extent an explanation; but it is sincerely hoped that the expectations of neither publishers nor readers will be raised too high.
