Book So Long See You Tomorrow

Download or read book So Long See You Tomorrow written by William Maxwell and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this magically evocative novel, William Maxwell explores the enigmatic gravity of the past, which compels us to keep explaining it even as it makes liars out of us every time we try. On a winter morning in the 1920s, a shot rings out on a farm in rural Illinois. A man named Lloyd Wilson has been killed. And the tenuous friendship between two lonely teenagers—one privileged yet neglected, the other a troubled farm boy—has been shattered. Fifty years later, one of those boys—now a grown man—tries to reconstruct the events that led up to the murder. In doing so, he is inevitably drawn back to his lost friend Cletus, who has the misfortune of being the son of Wilson's killer and who in the months before witnessed things that Maxwell's narrator can only guess at. Out of memory and imagination, the surmises of children and the destructive passions of their parents, Maxwell creates a luminous American classic of youth and loss.

Download or read book Home to Tunnel Hill written by Joseph Morris Webb and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of one family's historic odyssey through American religion, spanning the generations between the years 1780 to 2010. It is built around the Webb family of Southern Illinois, an extended family formed early by marriages with the Kelleys, Smiths, and the Yanceys. This is the story, first, of how this extended family became Mormons in Southern Illinois within only months after Joseph Smith founded the Mormon faith; second, it is the story of how this family became instrumental in changing a part of the Mormon faith into what was called the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints, the group that rejected Brigham Young's polygamy. Then, in 2000, the RLDS transformed itself into the new Protestant denomination called the Community of Christ. The book is unique in that all of this American religious history is told through the rich characters of the combined family of Webbs and Kelleys. Since the author is a journalist and this story involved research into his own family, the book is written in the form of a journalistic memoir. This includes how the author's immediate family after World War II left the family's religion in Southern Illinois, as well as the author's decision to return to the Community of Christ, the present day faith of his ancestors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the exact number will never be known, it is estimated that there were over 10,000 military engagements during the Civil War. Most have long since been forgotten, but the places where a number of them were fought have been maintained as historic sites. Others have been memorialized by statues or markers, as have many Civil War leaders and soldiers. Arranged by state, this reference work provides capsule descriptions and information on Civil War sites and collections throughout the United States, including battlefields, memorial markers and statues, museums, cemeteries and other landmarks. In addition to the description, the address and telephone number for each are given, along with admission fees (if any) and policies, hours open and other pertinent information. For each state, there is a brief profile of its role during the Civil War and a timeline of significant battles or other events that took place there.
