Book excerpt: Six binary Fe-Cr alloys with chromium levels ranging from 3 to 18% were tensile tested at room temperature following irradiation at 365, 403, and 574°C to doses of 7.4, 37.7, and 34.3 dpa, respectively. Irradiation at 365 and 403°C produced significant strengthening at all chromium levels, with concurrent reductions in ductility. Strength levels were insensitive to composition, irradiation temperature, or neutron exposure. Irradiation at 574°C produced strength increases at only the two highest chromium levels. The results are attributed to dislocation loop and void development at 365 and 403°C, and phase instability at 574°C. No evidence for channel fracture was found.

Book excerpt: Recent work on microstructural development in a series of ferritic alloys following irradiation in the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) is presented. the series includes Fe-Cr binary alloys ranging from 3 to 18 chromium, and substitutional ferritic alloys based on Fe-10Cr with minor additions of silicon, manganese, vanadium, tantalum, and zirconium. Irradiations were performed to fluences as high as 30 dpa at 425°C. the simple Fe-Cr binary alloy behavior following irradiation to 15 dpa was found to be similar to that observed following irradiation in EBR-II. All specimens contained radiation damage such as dislocation loops and voids. Swelling was highest, 0.26%, in the Fe-9Cr alloy with a corresponding dislocation network comprising equal parts of a?100? and a/2 ?111? Burger's vectors. Less swellings was found in other alloys with a corresponding dislocation structure composed mainly of a?100? loops. An example of a deformation slip band containing elongated voids was found, which indicated that channel fracture may occur in ferritic alloys that contain uniform void swelling.

Book excerpt: The deformed microstructures of both irradiated and unirradiated Fe-9Cr uniaxial tensile specimens have been examined to identify controlling mechanisms. Deformation following irradiation is found to occur in poorly defined channels, causing formation of discrete steps at surfaces and delineated by nonuniformly distributed highly elongated voids. Deformation is by motion of a/2111 dislocations, which interact with and decompose irradiation-induced a100 loops. The structure formed after extensive deformation consists of highly complex cell walls and moderate densities of individual slip dislocations.
