Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exploration of how the higher functions of the brain can be investigated, evaluated and, possibly, explained. A central theme throughout the book is rationality, since issues requiring rational evaluation confront many people everyday though emotional factors are often more influential in determining action. The book looks at various questions: is it possible to understand what is going on in someone else's mind?; why do people who are known very well often react irrationally, in a totally different way to what is expected?; what are emotions, beliefs, feelings and desire? Throughout, episodes from history involving famous artists and politicians are used - Gladstone and Lincoln, Bach and Graupner, Austen and Dickens - all providing useful examples to illustrate how rationality can provide an insight into the feeling self.

Book Medical Education and Training

Download or read book Medical Education and Training written by Yvonne Carter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of medical education and training has undergone dramatic changes within the past few years, and continues to evolve. Modernising Medical Careers, changes in the statutory role of the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board, and the Good Doctors, Safer Patients report from Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer, are just some of the factors affecting the way doctors are now learning. In this book, Yvonne Carter and Neil Jackson, experienced medical educators of both undergraduates and postgraduates who have demonstrated a long standing commitment to multi-professional education and training, bring together a prestigious team of contributors with a wide variety of experience across diverse academic, service and lay backgrounds, to provide a comprehensive, up to date review of medical education and training. With the demands on young doctors increasing, along with higher patient expectations, the need for ongoing education and training within the medical profession has never been higher. This book offers theoretical and practical guidance for those planning, delivering, and receiving education and training in ever-changing healthcare environments. Themes covered include assessment, professionalism and medical regulation, educational standards, patients' expectations, Continuing Professional Development, leadership and management, the European Working Time Directive, Fitness to Practice, interprofessional learning, the development of the NHS workforce, equality and diversity, and ethical and legal issues. Medical education needs to be a lifelong process, and this book integrates both undergraduate and postgraduate issues throughout, to encourage continued learning. This book will help ensure that future generations of doctors are trained to meet the changing needs of our population.

Book Health Humanities in Postgraduate Medical Education

Download or read book Health Humanities in Postgraduate Medical Education written by Allan D. Peterkin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most medical schools in the US, Canada and UK now incorporate some form of arts and humanities-based teaching into their curricula. What happens in residency is another story. Most postgraduate programs do not continue the thread of such teaching although many residents would like to deepen their understanding of the medical humanities before they move into practice. The humanities emphasize "the human side of medicine", and can provide a counterpoint to the reductionism of evidence-based medicine and technological hubris for young doctors as they apply new knowledge and skills in ambiguous, real-life encounters with patients who are living with complicated health problems. Humanities-based education can help both sides of the relationship: programs are shown to reduce burnout and mental health issues in young physicians, and can also help learning practitioners grapple with the most difficult aspects of their craft: how does one persuade patients on a course of treatment, while respecting informed consent? How does one work with families? How does one listen to and treat patients exhibiting self-harm tendencies? Available research may demonstrate the efficacy of such exposures, but provide little practical advice or resources for setting up programs across specialty and sub-specialty disciplines. Health Humanities in Post-Graduate Medical Education will fill this gap in knowledge translation for the thousands of residency programs worldwide, allowing educators, supervisors, and residents themselves to create robust and educationally sound workshops, seminars, study groups, lecture series, research and arts-based projects, publications and events.

Book excerpt: A psychologist's stories of doctors who seek to help others but struggle to help themselves From ER and M*A*S*H to Grey's Anatomy and House, the medical drama endures for good reason: we're fascinated by the people we must trust when we are most vulnerable. In Also Human, vocational psychologist Caroline Elton introduces us to some of the distressed physicians who have come to her for help: doctors who face psychological challenges that threaten to destroy their careers and lives, including an obstetrician grappling with his own homosexuality, a high-achieving junior doctor who walks out of her first job within weeks of starting, and an oncology resident who faints when confronted with cancer patients. Entering a doctor's office can be terrifying, sometimes for the doctor most of all. By examining the inner lives of these professionals, Also Human offers readers insight into, and empathy for, the very real struggles of those who hold power over life and death.
