Book Postbuckling Equilibrium of Axially Compressed Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Postbuckling Equilibrium of Axially Compressed Circular Cylindrical Shells written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earlier numerical solutions of the von Karman-Donnell large-displacement equations for thin circular cylindrical shells have been extended by considering larger numbers of terms in the double Fourier series representing the radial displacements after buckling. In the most comprehensive one of the calculations whose results are presented here a total potential energy expression consisting of about 1100 terms was minimized with respect to 16 unknowns. The results of the computations as well as theoretical considerations indicate that the solution for long shells of the von Karman-Donnell equations with the aid of the von Karman-Tsien Leggett procedure leads in the limit to the trivial solution in which the amplitude of the displacements tends to zero, the number of waves around the circumference tends to infinity and the average axial compressive stress capable of maintaining equilibrium in the post-buckling state tends to zero. Book excerpt: The analysis was begun with an investigation of the effect that a more accurate displacement assumption, in conjunction with the exact strain-displacement relations, has on the postbuckling equilibrium behavior. It was hoped that the limiting behavior of wall thickness and wave number parameter would be altered, and that the stress coefficient would not tend to zero. Particular attention was given to an exact representation of membrane strains because it was known that in the limit as the radius-to-thickness ratio of the shell approaches infinity, the displacements approach the inextensional polyhedral surface. While all the strains in the middle surface of this limiting polyhedral shell are zero, the Donnell strain-displacement relations yield strains amounting to 0.1% if the number of waves around the circumference is 10. The results obtained did not differ significantly from the Donnell strain-displacement relations. (Author).

Book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by N. Yamaki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1984-02-01 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book Buckling and Postbuckling of an Axially Compressed Oval Cylindrical Shell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy expressions and related differential equations for non-circular cylindrical shells, analogous to the corresponding relations presented by Donnell for thin-walled circular cylindrical shells, are summarized. Appropriate energy expressions are then applied to the classical buckling and to the nonlinear postbuckling problems of an axially compressed oval cylinder whose cross section is characterized by a simplified form of an expression proposed by Marguerre. In the case of classical buckling, the results show, for a range of major-to-minor axis ratio of the cross section lying between 1 (the circular cylinder) and 2.06, that the out-of-roundness has a marked effect on the critical load, and that introduction of the maximum radius of curvature into the formula for the classical buckling stress of a circular cylinder leads to good results for thin-walled shells of moderate eccentricity of the cross section. The postbuckling behavior is investigated through the application of the principle of stationary potential energy together with an approximate deflection function. The latter represents a modification of the expression applied earlier by the authors. The new results show that, in addition to the previously observed relative minimum postbuckling load, a relative maximum postbuckling load can exist. Furthermore, for controlled end-displacement loading, the large-deflection load vs end-shortening curve can correspond to stable equilibrium configurations throughout the entire loading range, whereas for dead-weight loading the region of the curve between the maximum and the minimum loads represents unstable configurations. This book was released on 1964 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The buckling stress of axially compressed thin-walled circular cylindrical shells of finite length is derived from the classical small-deflection equations for nine possible combinations of edge support conditions. It turns out that the effect upon the critical stress of the length-todiameter ratio of the shell is small except in some cases when the shell is very short. On the other hand, changes in the details of the edge support can lead to reduction factors of 1/2 or less to be applied to the classical value of the critical stress.

Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exact solutions are derived of the classical differential equations defining the deformations of axially compressed thin-walled circular cylindrical shells. The end conditions along the circular edges are assumed as the vanishing of (1) the radial displacement; (2) of the longitudinal bending moment; (3) of the variation in the axial normal stress, and (4) of the circumferential membrane shear stress. Under these conditions of simple support the critical value of the uniformly distributed axial normal stress is one-half the classical critical value. (Author).

Morgan (AFOSR) and Dr. N. S. Khot (AFWAL/FIBRA). The contract work was performed between October 1977 and December 1980. The technical report was released by the Author in December 1981. Preface Many structures are assembled from parts which are thin. For example, a stiffened plate or cylindrical panel is composed of a sheet the thickness of which is small com pared to its length, breadth, and stiffener- spacing, and stiffeners the thickness of which is small compared to their _ heights and lengths. These assembled structures, loaded in compression, can buckle overall, that is sheet and stiffeners can collapse together in a general instability mode; the sheet can buckle locally between stiffeners; the stiffeners can cripple; and a variety of complex buckling interactions can occur involving local and overall deformations of both sheet and stiffeners. More complex, built-up structures can buckle in more complex and subtle ways.
