Book The Third Component of Complement

Download or read book The Third Component of Complement written by John D. Lambris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third component of complement, C3, is one of the most versatile proteins and an important participant in immune surveillance and immune response pathways. Its multifunctio nality is based on its ability to interact specifically with multiple serum complement proteins, cell surface receptors, and mem brant;-associated regulatory proteins. One of its most intriguing strategies of interaction with cell surfaces is the covalent binding of activated C3 through the internal thioester. The field has expanded over the past 10 years and a wealth of information has accumulated. C3 from various species and many of the human C3 binding proteins have been cloned and expressed. Numerous cellular responses mediated by the diffe rent fragments of C3 have been described. The findings that C3 interacts in a ligand-receptor-like fashion with proteins of nonself origin such as the gC of herpes simplex virus, a 70-kDa protein from Candida albicans, proteins from Epstein-Barr virus, etc. has opened a new field of investigation. The papers assembled in this volume summarize the wealth of data on the various aspects of the C3 interactions; together they bring to the reader new information on the chemistry, molecular gene tics, biology, and pathophysiology of C3 and C3-binding proteins. Emphasis is given to structural features as they relate to functions. Spring 1989 JOHN D. LAMBRIS, HANS J. MULLER-EBERHARD Table of Contents J. E. Download or read book The Complement System written by Klaus Rother and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon contemplating an updated version of the 1974 edition of this book and envisioning its possible organization, it immediately became evident that the new version could no longer be written by one, two, or even three authors. The field has experienced an explosive expansion in various directions, and the wealth of newer data which has been accumulated over the last decade can hardly be presented by a single author in a critical and coherent manner. On the other hand, it appears worthwhile not to abandon the attempt to come foreward with a review which describes as comprehensively as possible the progress and the state of knowledge. It is the aim of this volume to present a general and comprehensive review on complement. It is intended not only for individuals working in this area, but also for those who are less familiar with the field. Several chapters in the book describe state-of-the-art experimental methods which are helpful to critically evaluate the experimental data. Simultaneously, they may provide the necessary technical tools for those who wish to enter this highly provocative and exciting field.

Book Activators and Inhibitors of Complement

Download or read book Activators and Inhibitors of Complement written by Robert B. Sim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complement system is a group of proteins which plays a major role in the processing and removal of microorganisms and tissue breakdown products from the circulation and extracellular spaces. The system is activated by a wide range of targets, and activation leads to the production of opsonins, chemotaxis of granulocytes, cell lysis and other biological activities. Inappropriate overactivation of the system contributes to inflammatory tissue damage in the host, while inadequate activation leads to accumulation of immune complexes and other debris in the circulation, and susceptibility to infection. The biology and biochemistry of the system is now adequately understood, and attempts can be made to manipulate the activation and activities of the system for potential therapeutic purposes. The reviews in this volume summarise what is known of the ways in which the complement system can be activated, by interaction with antibodies, microorganisms, cell debris, and complex carbohydrates and how the activities and activation of the system have been modified, accidentally or by design, in vitro or in vivo by drugs, venoms, particulate carbohydrates, specific antibodies, synthetic peptides and other reagents.

Book Mechanisms of Intracellular Trafficking and Processing of Proproteins

Download or read book Mechanisms of Intracellular Trafficking and Processing of Proproteins written by Y. Peng Loh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-10-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanisms of Intracellular Trafficking and Processing of ProProteins provides an in-depth discussion of the cellular organization and current views of the molecular mechanisms underlying the trafficking, sorting, and processing of various classes of proproteins. The book covers the mechanisms of pro-protein translocation across the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) membrane and subsequent transport to the Golgi apparatus, molecular sorting and retention signals involved in directing pro-proteins to various cellular compartments, and the specific enzymes mediating different posttranslational modification steps. It is the only book that covers the principles of intracellular trafficking and processing of proproteins using examples representative of different classes of proproteins in the cell. New classes of enzymes, especially proteases with unique specificities, are examined as well. Mechanisms of Intracellular Trafficking and Processing of ProProteins presents a wealth of information valuable to cell biologists, endocrinologists, neurobiologists, enzymologists, and biochemists. Students studying molecular endocrinology, neurobiology, and cell biology will also find the book to be a useful text.

Download or read book The Lectins written by Irvin Liener and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lectins: Properties, Functions, and Applications in Biology and Medicine is a 10-chapter text that deals with the advances in research studies on the properties, functions, and applications of lectins in biology and medicine. The first two chapters consider the historical development, physicochemical properties, isolation, and remarkable specificity toward sugars of lectins. These topics are followed by a discussion on the molecular aspects of protein evolution, with a particular emphasis on lectins, which provide an excellent example of a family of homologous proteins. The following chapters explore the diverse biological activities of lectins and how these properties are utilized for the isolation and characterization of carbohydrate-containing compounds in solution and on cells. A chapter focuses on the functions of lectins in their natural milieu. This text further covers the importance of lectins in nonplant systems as exemplified by lectins that occur in vertebrates, slime molds, and bacteria. The last chapter highlights the nutritional significance of the occurrence of lectins in plant foods such as legumes. This book is an ideal source for organic chemists, protein researchers, and workers in the fields of biology and medicine.
