Book Post harvest Fisheries Development

Download or read book Post harvest Fisheries Development written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With fisheries all over the world reaching their limits of sustainable exploitation, there is a great need to ensure that the fish which are caught reach the consumer with minimal losses. The expansion of fishery products and attention to quality demanded by consumers requires policy-makers and fishery workers to have an understanding of the post-harvest aspects of fishery development. This book is a layman's guide to all aspects of post-harvest fisheries science and technology both in modern and traditional fisheries in many parts of the world. It is aimed at managers in government and industry, often non-specialists, who have to make decisions about post-harvest fisheries development.

Book Advances in Harvest and Post Harvest Technology of Fishes

Download or read book Advances in Harvest and Post Harvest Technology of Fishes written by D.D. Nambudiri: and published by NIPA GENX ELECTRONIC RESOURCES & SOLUTIONS P. LTD.. This book was released on 2012-01-15 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there have been notable advances in the fisheries. Progresses made in refinements of vessels, new line materials and line-handling systems, preserving the catch, the availability of oceanographic-sensor equipments and the utilization of satellite technology to locate potential fishing grounds have greatly improved the fishing power of longline vessels. Post harvest technology of fish has evolved in the last one decade to a more energy-efficient, cost-effective, and quality upgrading technology. Since fresh fish can get spoiled very quickly, the development of technology for post-harvest preservation and methodology to convert fish to value added products have also become popular in recent times. Value addition helps in getting high price for the fishery products. There is a need to develop competent human resources in the field of post harvest management of fish and production of value added products from them. It is required to inculcate vocational and entrepreneurial skills in order to widen employment opportunities, particularly among rural youth and the disadvantaged sections of the society as well as to enable self employment.

Book Post harvest practices for empowering women in small scale fisheries in Africa

Download or read book Post harvest practices for empowering women in small scale fisheries in Africa written by Kimani, P., Adrien, B., Ward, A., Ahern, M. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-harvest challenges faced by small-scale fisheries stakeholders have been the focus of numerous projects, programmes and investments in Africa. Many of these initiatives have aimed to benefit women, who often dominate processing and trade activities. This report provides a summary of key findings from a desk review and primary data research that has aimed to identify successful post-harvest initiatives related to infrastructure design and management, improved post-harvest technology, value addition and access to finance. The examples described could be used by development practitioners and policy makers to inform the direction, design and implementation of future post-harvest fisheries initiatives. The use of locally made fish boxes to improve on board handling and the use of drying racks are described. And although the intention was to focus on small-pelagic fish value chains, some of the examples have a more general application such as those for infrastructure, value addition and the microfinance models that are included. It is important to note that this is not a definitive study and that the focus has been primarily on initiatives is Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda. The report and guidance align with and aim to support the implementation of the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The guidelines promote the role of SSFs in food security and nutrition, the right to adequate food, equitable development and poverty alleviation, and to the provision of decent work for fishers and fish workers.

Book Fisheries Development

Download or read book Fisheries Development written by Bjørn Hersoug and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All coastal states have ambitions for the development of their fisheries. Not only do fisheries play an important role in sustaining peoples' livelihoods, but also in many countries in the north and the south, fisheries are important for the national economy. Moreover, fisheries are part of the process of globalisation, which, for better or worse, means that fisheries issues and problems have implications that extend beyond the level of the nation state. Fisheries development: the institutional challenge is the result of a long-term research programme on fisheries in developing countries. The book explains how fisheries development strategies changed over the years, from simple ideas of modernising the production equipment (boats and gear) to complex programmes involving management and institution building. It highlights the role of the state and the community in resource management and the challenges offered by new concepts such as ecosystem management in a Third World setting. Book jacket.

Book Securing sustainable small scale fisheries Showcasing applied practices in value chains post harvest operations and trade

Download or read book Securing sustainable small scale fisheries Showcasing applied practices in value chains post harvest operations and trade written by Zelasney, J. ; Ford, A, ; Westlund, L. ; Ward, A. and Riego Peñarubia, O. eds. and published by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SSF Guidelines recognize the right of fishers and fishworkers, acting both individually and collectively, to improve their livelihoods through value chains, post-harvest operations and trade. To achieve this, the Guidelines recommend building capacity of individuals, strengthening organizations and empowering women; reducing post-harvest losses and adding value to small-scale fisheries production; and facilitating sustainable trade and equitable market access. This document includes nine studies showcasing applied practices and successful initiatives in support of enhancing small-scale fisheries value chains, post-harvest operations and trade, based on the recommendations contained in the SSF Guidelines. Cases presented have been chosen on the basis that they can be emulated elsewhere by small-scale fishery proponents including, but not limited to, national administrations, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, private enterprises, development agencies and intergovernmental bodies. An analysis of enabling conditions as well as related challenges and opportunities are discussed in each case. The document supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – specifically SDG 14.b: “provide access for small-scale artisanal fishers to marine resources and markets”; and SDG 2.3: “by 2030 double the agricultural productivity and the incomes of small-scale food producers, particularly women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment”.

Book Post harvest Losses in Small scale Fisheries

Download or read book Post harvest Losses in Small scale Fisheries written by Gbola Akande and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2010 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field work recently carried out in five sub-Saharan Africa (Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Tanzania and Uganda) indicates that post-harvest fish losses in small-scale fisheries occur at all stages in the fish supply chain from capture to consumer. This technical paper, as support to the framework of the regional post-harvest loss assessment (PHLA) programme in small-scale fisheries in Africa aimed at improving the utilisation, safety and quality of fishery products, presents the findings, lessons learned and key achievements of the field studies. The paper underlines the need for governments and development agencies to ensure that changes in post-harvest fisheries-related policy and practices take stock of the loss assessment tools, information generated and experience of the programme and recommends that fish loss assessments should be incorporated into national data collection systems and used to regularly inform policy.
