Book Positron and Positronium Chemistry

Download or read book Positron and Positronium Chemistry written by D. M. Schrader and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the use and significance of positrons in several fields of chemistry, including chemical analysis, surface chemistry, quantum chemistry, the structure of molecular solids, radiation chemistry, the structures of supramolecular species (polymers, vesicles, micelles, etc.), clustering phenomena in gases, etc. Because the positron is an unfamiliar particle to most chemists, the first chapter provides an easily understood introduction to this fascinating chemical species. Applications of various positron techniques to practical problems in chemistry are described which will be interesting and useful to many chemists. Some will find new methods of enquiry into their own systems, and new ways of thinking about them. Practical details of how to set up experiments are given, and information about what can be learned from the data is provided. This is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject in almost 25 years. It will be of interest to those in all fields of chemistry as well as certain areas of biology and materials science. The book features an excellent subject index and a full authors' index and is illustrated by 139 graphs and drawings.

Book New Directions in Antimatter Chemistry and Physics

Download or read book New Directions in Antimatter Chemistry and Physics written by Clifford M. Surko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the outgrowth of a workshop held in October, 2000 at the Institute for Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics at the Harvard- Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, MA. The aim of this book (similar in theme to the workshop) is to present an overview of new directions in antimatter physics and chemistry research. The emphasis is on positron and positronium interactions both with themselves and with ordinary matter. The timeliness of this subject comes from several considerations. New concepts for intense positron sources and the development of positron accumulators and trap-based positron beams provide qualitatively new experimental capabilities. On the theoretical side, the ability to model complex systems and complex processes has increased dramatically in recent years, due in part to progress in computational physics. There are presently an intriguing variety of phenomena that await theoretical explanation. It is virtually assured that the new experimental capabilities in this area will lead to a rapid expansion of this list. This book is organized into four sections: The first section discusses potential new experimental capabilities and the uses and the progress that might be made with them. The second section discusses topics involving antihydrogen and many-body phenomena, including Bose condensation of positronium atoms and positron interactions with materials. The final two sections treat a range of topics involving positron and positronium interactions with atoms and molecules.

Book Positrons in Solids

    Book Details:
  • Author : P. Hautojärvi
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 364281316X
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Positrons in Solids written by P. Hautojärvi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In condensed matter initially fast positrons annihilate after having reached equi librium with the surroundings. The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field. Nowadays it is becoming part of the "stock-in-trade" of experimental physics.
