The 47th issue of POSHAN’s Abstract Digest features studies on maternal nutrition, anemia, and infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices. The maternal nutrition articles include a modeling study that examines the importance of prenatal nutrition for reducing the global burden of non-communicable diseases, and a gap analysis study to identify key elements to strengthen maternal nutrition counselling during routine health services. There are two anemia articles: one examines the association of adolescent anemia and physical growth with learning outcomes, while the other investigates the prevalence and determinants of anemia among men. Among the two articles covering IYCF practices, one assesses food group consumption patterns among children in 59 countries and the other investigates the association between IYCF practices and nutrition indicators. Other interesting studies in this issue include two articles based on learnings from interventions through women’s self-help groups, an assessment of anthropometric data quality in India’s National Family Health Survey, another on implementation characteristics of father-inclusive interventions in low- and middle-income countries, and one on the perceptions, risk factors, and behaviors of overweight adults.

Book excerpt: "UNICEF's 2009 report Tracking Progress on Child and Maternal Nutrition drew attention to the impact of high levels of undernutrition on child survival, growth and development and their social and economic toll on nations. It described the state of nutrition programmes worldwide and argued for improving and expanding delivery of key nutrition interventions during the critical 1,000-day window covering a woman's pregnancy and the first two years of her child's life, when rapid physical and mental development occurs. This report builds on those earlier findings by highlighting new developments and demonstrating that efforts to scale up nutrition programmes are working, benefiting children in many countries."--Page 1.

Book Treating Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders With Herbal Medicines

Download or read book Treating Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders With Herbal Medicines written by Hussain, Arif and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The utilization of herbal medicine to treat endocrine and metabolic disorders has garnered much attention within the past few decades. Specifically, the popularity of using dietary supplements for the management of chronic disorders has drastically increased, with a wide variety of these products available over the counter. They represent an attractive adjuvant to traditional therapy for their lower toxicity and their easy accessibility. The identification of such dietary compounds has prompted researchers to explore the vast array of their beneficial effects. However, despite their widespread use, there is still limited data on the safety and efficacy of the products currently on the market. Current research on the side effects and safe usage of herbal medicines is necessary for providing optimal care and counseling for patients. Treating Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders With Herbal Medicines is a comprehensive reference book focused on spreading awareness on the safety, potential harmful effects, and rational use of herbal medicines. The chapters within explore and provide insight on the effectiveness, versatility, and side effects of various herbal medicines across a range of different diseases and conditions. While highlighting herbal medicine in areas such as diabetes, cancer, infertility, and endocrine disorders, this publication is ideally intended for clinical practitioners, pharmaceutical scientists, doctors, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in enhancing their knowledge and awareness in the field of complementary medicine.

Book excerpt: Food systems are at a critical juncture—they are evolving quickly to meet growing and changing demand but are not serving everyone’s needs. Building more inclusive food systems can bring a wide range of economic and development benefits to all people, especially the poor and disadvantaged. IFPRI’s 2020 Global Food Policy Report examines the policies and investments and the growing range of tools and technologies that can promote inclusion. Chapters examine the imperative of inclusion, challenges faced by smallholders, youth, women, and conflict-affected people, and the opportunities offered by expanding agrifood value chains and national food system transformations. Critical questions addressed include: How can inclusive food systems help break the intergenerational cycle of poverty and malnutrition? \What can be done to strengthen the midstream of food value chains to improve rural access to jobs, markets, and services? Will Africa’s food systems generate sufficient jobs for the growing youth population? How can women be empowered within food system processes, from household decisions to policymaking? Can refugees and other conflict-affected people be integrated into food systems to help them rebuild their lives? How can national food system transformations contribute to greater dietary diversity, food safety, and food quality for all? Regional sections look at how inclusion can be improved around the world in 2020 and beyond. The report also presents interesting trends revealed by IFPRI’s food policy indicators and datasets.
