Book The Mexican Prints of Posada and Manilla

Download or read book The Mexican Prints of Posada and Manilla written by Alan Weller and published by . This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantial compilation features more than 150 cartoons and illustrations in book and digital formats by Mexico's greatest printmakers during the period 1890–1915. Professional and amateur graphic artists alike will find a broad range of uses for these distinctive images of bullfighters, musicians, soldiers, angels, and fiends as well as darkly humorous renditions of live skeletons. A bonus CD-ROM including digital JPEG files of all the artwork accompanies the book. Manuel Manilla drew political cartoons and illustrations for the popular left-wing press of the day. He is chiefly remembered for his etchings on zinc for the free political leaflets and broadsides that were distributed among the lower classes of Mexico City. The works of Jose Guadalupe Posada are often compared to those of the French artist Honore Daumier because of their preoccupation with political strife and class warfare. Posada is particularly noted for his calaveras — satirical interpretations of the skeletons associated with Mexico's Catholic holiday, Da del los Muertos (Day of the Dead) — many of which appear throughout this compilation.

Book Funny Bones

Download or read book Funny Bones written by Duncan Tonatiuh and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funny Bones tells the story of how the amusing calaveras—skeletons performing various everyday or festive activities—came to be. They are the creation of Mexican artist José Guadalupe (Lupe) Posada (1852–1913). In a country that was not known for freedom of speech, he first drew political cartoons, much to the amusement of the local population but not the politicians. He continued to draw cartoons throughout much of his life, but he is best known today for his calavera drawings. They have become synonymous with Mexico’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival. Juxtaposing his own art with that of Lupe’s, author Duncan Tonatiuh brings to light the remarkable life and work of a man whose art is beloved by many but whose name has remained in obscurity. The book includes an author’s note, bibliography, glossary, and index.

Book Posada

    Book Details:
  • Author : José Guadalupe Posada
  • Publisher : Editorial Rm
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book Posada written by José Guadalupe Posada and published by Editorial Rm. This book was released on 2008 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available for the first time in English, this volume brings the distinctly Mexican flavor of José Guadalupe Posada's work home to the reader with the striking design of its uncoated pages in the three different colors of the Mexican flag: green, white and red. Interspersed with a varied selection of the artist's engravings--broadsheets, corridos, chapbooks, vignettes, calaveras, games and a long etcetera of miscellaneous material featuring subjects like bullfights, Day of the Dead and crimes of passion--are two long texts by recognized authorities on the work of Posada. One essay deals with Posada's place in the wider tradition of graphic art and engraving, even as it follows his remarkable career from lithographer in the Mexican provinces to "popular" artist representing the quintessential expression of the Mexican Revolution at the beginning of the twentieth century. The other looks at Posada's role as a "professional of the image" in the changing world of publishing for a nascent but fast-growing reading public in late-nineteenth-century Mexico. Finally, the volume contains a biographical chronology of Posada's life and work, a bibliography and more than 600 fascinating reproductions.

Book Posada

    Book Details:
  • Author : José Guadalupe Posada
  • Publisher : Rm
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9788415118473
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Posada written by José Guadalupe Posada and published by Rm. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1930, Posada: Monografía is a facsimile edition of the first monograph of the great Mexican illustrator and engraver José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913). Reprinted to coincide with the 100th anniversary of his death, reproduces more than 400 of the most iconic prints from Posada's vast output, collected by Pablo O'Higgins from those that could be located and identified at the time. Posada and Manuel Manilla--a talented engraver who greatly influenced Posada--were the two artists of their day who best interpreted the lives and social attitudes of Mexican people. Posada, in particular, is in the great tradition of illustrators who double as political and social commentators (a tradition that also includes Aubrey Beardsley and Honoré Daumier). The images of the high-spirited, at times macabre broadsheets reproduced in Posada: Monografía include the famous calaveras, or skeleton creatures, along with illustrations for songs, corridos (traditional ballads) and religious prayers. The skeletons in the barrios were a metaphor for a corrupt society; Posada supplemented his black humor with lampoons of venal politicians, and, not surprisingly, was jailed on several occasions for his transgressions. With their striking visual qualities, his ingenious images did much to enrich the tradition of the popular Mexican print. Posada: Monografía also includes an introduction by Frances Toor, the legendary editor of Mexican Folkways magazine, and an essay by Diego Rivera.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aureliano Urrutia, a prominent physician in Mexico City, built Miraflores garden after immigrating to Texas during the Mexican Revolution. A man of science, he valued nature, art, literature, history, and community. The garden, whose name roughly translates to “behold the flowers,” was built primarily from 1921 to 1945. Its plants, architecture, sculpture, and artisanship formed a cultural landscape reflecting Urrutia’s love for and memory of his homeland. Though recent decades have rendered much of the garden decayed and barely recognizable, it is now part of San Antonio’s historic Brackenridge Park. Miraflores: San Antonio’s Mexican Garden of Memory recounts the garden’s history and celebrates the importance of the cultural, historical, and artistic meaning of a place.
