Book Studies on Variation in Portuguese

Download or read book Studies on Variation in Portuguese written by Pilar Barbosa and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on Variation in Portuguese offers a collection of studies on a range of variable phenomena attested within and across varieties of Portuguese. The volume starts out with an overview of current issues in the study of intralinguistic variation and is divided in two parts. Part 1 is dedicated to research on variation within national varieties (Brazilian and European). Here, a multidimensional analysis that combines both the geographic and the social dimensions of variation emerges as a way to identify possible regional specificities and the directionality of some of the variants. Part 2 collects studies that compare the behavior of a particular linguistic variable across different varieties. The variable phenomena discussed concern several levels of grammar and are framed within different conceptions of variation, thus promoting confrontation of theoretical and methodological alternatives. Overall, the volume constitutes a significant contribution to the essential question of how to model variation at different levels.

Book Narratives in Motion

Download or read book Narratives in Motion written by Luís Trindade and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interwar Portugal was in many ways a microcosm of Europe’s encounter with modernity: reshaped by industrialization, urban growth, and the antagonism between liberalism and authoritarianism, it also witnessed new forms of media and mass culture that transformed daily life. This fascinating study of newspapers in 1920s Portugal explores how the new “modernist reportage” embodied the spirit of the era while mediating some of its most spectacular episodes, from political upheavals to lurid crimes of passion. In the process, Luís Trindade illuminates the twofold nature of that journalism—both historical account and material object, it epitomized a distinctly modern entanglement of narrative and event.

Book In visible Acts of Resistance in the Twilight of the Franco Regime

Download or read book In visible Acts of Resistance in the Twilight of the Franco Regime written by Aurora G. Morcillo and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which everyday practices allowed women to sustain and fulfill individuality and agency under dictatorial rule? This book adds to a rich scholarship on the history of late Francoism and the transition to democracy in Modern Spain through the lens of oral history and life writing. Aurora Morcillo tells the stories of anonymous individuals from both student and working class backgrounds - crucial sites of active resistance against the dictatorship at the time - and provides an interdisciplinary feminist analysis of the inevitable modernization of Spain in the 1960s and 1970s. This study uncovers a Deleuzian rendition of historical unfolding/becoming rather than simply being a collection of oral histories: a historical narration which proposes to be a creative historical ontology.
