Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portugal Old and Young: An Historical Study Portugal, during the years before the war, gave an English student of national reform movements and of international relations much interesting material and many opportunities of usefulness. But the war simplified the situation both internally and internationally, by submerging the cross-currents and side-channels through which the Portuguese national renascence was threadmg 1ts way; and these will not again appear until the flood subsides. Not that the military relationship between allies in wartime is without diplomatic difficulties; but such, like other war liabilities, are carried over to be paid off after peace. There fore, as we have found before, especially after the Napoleonic wars, a return to peace conditions may be a trying process for both parties, unless there be a certain standard of under standing between the two peoples. The following essays on Portugal and its people have been written as a contribution to the better understanding of Portugal in England; and as the only contribution that a friend of Portugal can make since the war caused him to desert diplomacy' for 'intelligence and Lisbon for London. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Portugal Portugal had been familiar to me from my earliest youth, for my road to and from Spain had Often lain that way, and circumstances had made me conversant with the language and his tory Of the country; and yet this book is not the outcome Of any such previous knowledge, but mainly Of one short voyage in Search Of change and health. It happened in this way. As oft befalls men who in this striving world have to wring their brains for drachmas, the completion Of a particularly arduous book had left me tem porarily a nervous wreck, sleepless and despairing. The first and most Obvious need dictated to me by those who settle such matters, was to forget for a time that pens, ink, and paper existed, and to seek relaxation in a clime where printers cease from troubling and reviewers are at rest. But where? Spain certainly would Ofl'er me no such. A haven: France was too near home, Germany I disliked, Switzerland was trite and overrun, the novelty Of Italy I had long before exhausted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Portugal For the illustrations to' this volume I am indebted to the kindness of the Right Honourable Thomas Sotheron Estcourt, who has allowed me to choose from among a valuable series of finished sketches in pen and ink, and in sepia, made by him in the course of a visit to the Peninsula. These sketches were in every case made upon the spot, and to their perfect fidelity I can myself testify. After attempting in vain to get the delicacy and finish of the drawings reproduced by the engraver, I had to fall back on photography; and they appear in the shape of re duced facsimiles by means of the Woodbury Type process. Book Spain and Portugal Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book Spain and Portugal Handbook Classic Reprint written by Karl Baedeker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain and Portugal Handbook Hotels. It is impossible to apply the standard prevailing in more advanced countries to the hotels of Spain; and though an improvement may be noticed in recent years, the number of really good hotels in the Peninsula is far below the demands of the increasing number of visitors. This deficiency of supply has inevitably led to enhanced charges, especially in the chief centres of attraction. The Editor, however, has indicated by asterisks those hotels which he has reason to believe, from his own experience as well as from information received from travellers, to be fairly well provided with the comforts and conveniences expected in up-to-date establishments. Houses of a more modest or more primitive character, when good of their class, are described as 'good' or 'very fair'. Comfortable quarters may, no doubt, be sometimes obtained also at inns that the Editor has not recommended or even named. But comp. p. xxv. To hotel-keepers, tradesmen, and others the Editor begs to intimate that a character for fair dealing and courtesy towards travellers is the sole passport to his commendation, and that advertisements of every kind are strictly excluded from his Handbooks. Hotel-owners are also warned against persons representing themselves as agents for Baedeker's Handbooks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Pleasant Springs in Portugal And twenty years later an officer, on his way to join the army in the Peninsula, was a whole month on passage from Spithead to Lisbon - three weeks tossing in the Bay! Still, the voyage had its agre'ments. Our passengers were continually quarrelling among themselves, and some of them had given and received so many challenges to mortal combat, that the number of duels to be fought when they got ashore was quite bewildering, and it would have been necessary that a diary of events had been kept by which to ascertain their order of precedence.' How tame and commonplace, by comparison, must seem the experience of the present-day traveller! Why, dear me, more than fifty years ago we find the author of The Crescent and the Cross dogmatising in the airiest fashion about the much-calumniated Bay of Biscay, whose dangers are merely traditional, since the introduction Of steam.'
