Book Portraiture Unplugged

Download or read book Portraiture Unplugged written by Carl Caylor and published by Amherst Media. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good lighting is everything in portraiture. The right light sculpts our subjects, smooths the skin, evens skin tones, and helps create the feeling of a third dimension in a two-dimensional image. The gold standard of lighting has, for the better part of a century, been produced by artificial lights (hot lights or strobes) in the studio. These sources allow for precise lighting effects on demand. However, artificial light cannot match the beauty or ambience that gorgeous natural light creates—and studio lighting can break the bank. In part 1 of this book, Carl Caylor introduces readers to a failproof method for understanding, shaping, and harnessing natural light for dazzling results that rival studio-lighting looks. Using your powers of observation, an understanding of the physics of light, and employing a couple of inexpensive tools (reflector panels to bounce light and a gobo to block light), Caylor shows you how to make the most of the sunlight for indoor and outdoor location shoots—and even studio work. You’ll learn how to tweak the direction of light and manipulate lighting angles to re-create classic portrait lighting styles—short lighting, broad lighting, Rembrandt lighting, and more—that flatter and contour your subjects’ facial structures to make them look their very best. In part 2 of the book, Carl provides an in-depth analysis into the techniques he used to create 60 beautiful natural-light portraits in myriad locations and circumstances, producing a wide range of portrait looks. Readers will learn how to integrate other elements that are important to building an effective portrait—including prop selection, wardrobe, composition, expression, posing, and even planning for a top-notch, contrasty black & white shot. The text in this book, along with inspirational images, will coax many readers to enjoy a “back to basics” approach that will allow them to produce technically exquisite and profoundly artful, flattering portraits that will sell themselves to clients every time.

Book excerpt: In photography, every decision, creative and technical, rides on achieving a good exposure. When we strike the right balance in our exposure, we have a full range of tones, from pure white to deep blacks. We have rich visual detail. We have a sense of dimension. The colors and tones and contrast in our images weave the visual story of our subject and scene in a way that visually computes. • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Sikh Weddings written by and published by Amherst Media. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sikh weddings are vibrant, ritual-steeped events that can stretch on for days. Each wedding is unique and unforgettable. Photographing them is a joy and a challenge: there are countless facets to photograph — and many moments seeped in meaning and tradition. Documenting can’t-miss moments as they unfold requires a comprehensive understanding of the elements of the wedding, from start to finish. Sohal teaches readers the ins and outs of photographing the Sikh wedding. He offers general guidelines — greetings to use with men versus those to use with women — and moves on to share some pointers regarding general expectations the family will have of the photographer (e.g., never refuse food — that would be impolite; expect to take far more family photos than you may be accustomed to). Next, he describes the major events of the wedding and explains the significance of each. With easy to digest text and gorgeous illustrations, this book is not to be missed.

Book The Soft Touch

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Amherst Media
  • Release : 2015-10-19
  • ISBN : 1608959503
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book The Soft Touch written by and published by Amherst Media. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image sharpness is one of photography’s yin/yang propositions. Soft focus can impair a photograph, and just as readily enhance it—in some cases, greatly enhance it. What we perceive as blur, as soft zones in a picture, function in very much the same manner as deep shadows or overexposed highlights. By minimizing or concealing certain details in the image by selectively throwing areas out of focus at will, the photographer can direct a viewer’s attention through the image as he or she intends. Like the rest stops in a piece of music, creatively manipulated zones of softness can totally govern a photograph’s overall impact. There are dozens of ways to selectively reduce sharpness in any part of an image, and three important reasons for a photographer to be fluent in his or her ability to create a soft-focus look: (1) to emphasize important picture details by subordinating or eliminating others; (2) to reduce or remove details of a subject that undermine a picture’s intent, and (3) to create a mood impression, an aura, that suggests something about a subject that doesn’t actually appear in the frame. In this book, Jim Cornfield surveys in detail the art of selectively using soft focus in your photography. Readers will learn about the history of soft-focus photography, then move to technical discussions for creating the effect in-camera (taking advantage of spherical aberrations, circles of confusion, and bokeh—the way a lens, due to its unique properties and specific aperture shape, renders image areas that lie outside of the focus range—often described as “good” or “bad” bokeh). Next, readers will move on to a study of post-capture image manipulations using Photoshop and third-party plugins in order to re-create traditional effects. Finally, the author includes an appendix of currently available optical and digital products intended for the creative application of soft-focus effects. Armed with the tools needed to produce a predictable soft-focus look, readers will be able to expand their photographic repertoire for enhanced artistic expression and stand-out work that will draw clients and generate client referrals.

Book Studio Lighting Unplugged

Download or read book Studio Lighting Unplugged written by Rod Deutschmann and published by Amherst Media. This book was released on 2014-12-26 with total page 160 pages. Rather, this guide shows photographers how to create studio lighting effects that range from clean and classic to highly complex and use a garage, spare bedroom, or even a backyard as their “studio.” The simple setups show that one to three small, inexpensive electronic flash units—along with budget-friendly stands, communication systems, and some do-it-yourself light modifiers—can be combined to create brilliant studio-quality images without the studio. Numerous sample shoots and plans provide clear instructions for taking control of any environment to create spectacular images.
