For the discussion of this thesis Poe’s short stories “The Oval Portrait,” “Morella”, “Berenice” and especially “Ligeia” will be considered. Many of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories deal with a fixation on dying women as he famously states in “The Philosophy of Composition: “death, then, of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world” (1621). The death of those women is often violent as they are murdered by a male character as a result of an “emotional estrangement between the male protagonist and a fated female” (Kennedy 118). Interestingly, the characters and the circumstances surrounding those deaths are described with an emphasis on the “lexical field of sight” (Marín-Ruiz 58) so that already “a cursory exposure to Poe’s fiction leaves a strong impression of his recurrent emphasis on the eye” (Scheick 80). Detailed accounts of eyes, glances, gazes and vision keep reappearing in the selected stories, so that sight becomes one of the key elements of the tales.

The story revolves around the complex and often tragic relationship between life and art. As per usual Poe can’t help himself to play with layers, and most of the story is told as an embedded narrative. The intense emotional and psychological depths of the narrator’s infatuation with the portrait and the enticing volume that helps to shed a light on the painting make this short story another fascinating and haunting and Poesque tale which succinctly glorifies the immortality of art. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, author, and literary critic. Most famous for his poetry, short stories, and tales of the supernatural, mysterious, and macabre, he is also regarded as the inventor of the detective genre and a contributor to the emergence of science fiction, dark romanticism, and weird fiction. His most famous works include "The Raven" (1945), "The Black Cat" (1943), and "The Gold-Bug" (1843).

The story may be the narrator's opium-induced hallucination and there is debate whether the story was a satire. Plot Summary: The story is told by an unnamed narrator who describes the qualities of Ligeia: a beautiful, passionate and intellectual woman, raven-haired and dark-eyed. He thinks he remembers meeting her "in some large, old decaying city near the Rhine". He is unable to recall anything about the history of Ligeia, including her family's name, but remembers her beautiful appearance. Her beauty, however, is not conventional. He describes her as emaciated, with some "strangeness". He describes her face in detail, from her "faultless" forehead to the "divine orbs" of her eyes. They marry, and Ligeia impresses her husband with her immense knowledge of physical and mathematical science, and her proficiency in classical languages. She begins to show her husband her knowledge of metaphysical and "forbidden" wisdom.

Different than many essays that have similar topics and criticize Poe's patriarchal thoughts, this essay examines the overlap between Poe's Gothic stories and feminist theories and analyzes Poe's feminist ideas and thoughts. This essay argues that there is a feminist element in Poe's stories, and describes the kind of feminist thought he holds.This essay introduces some feminist theories that are relevant to victimization in Poe's stories. These theories are helpful to understand Poe's five stories--mainly the women in these stories, and their relationship with patriarchal power. With the combination of these feminist theories, this essay analyses some different aspects of the stories (the female characters' appearances, sex, the position of females in their family relationships, children, the dependence and independence females) and it tries to figure out the overlap between Poe's stories and feminist theories to determine the kinds of feminist thought Poe holds. At the same time, this essay reviews previous essays about Poe and his female characters from scholars who studied Poe and women--such as their exploration of the images in Poe's stories, and their positive or negative comments on Poe's works. This essay tries to fill the research gap by using feminist theories to analyze Poe's feminist thoughts and have a better understanding of the five stories and the female characters. This essay covers studies beyond the Western world and introduces some Eastern voices. Victimization regards women as victims of patriarchal power. With the help of theories about female victims that Virginia Woolf mentions in Three Guineas and "A Room of One's Own," Germaine Greer's theory about victims in The Female Eunuch, victim feminism that Diane Long Hoeveler examines in Gothic Feminism, Karen Weekes' opinions of the husband/inflictor and wife/victim in "Poe's Feminine Ideal" and so on, this essay determines that although Poe represents some traditional and domestic women in his stories, he creates some independent females who pursue the agency of sex and knowledge at the same time, such as Ligeia and Berenice. Poe praises their beauty, charms or characteristics of all these women in his stories. Poe is aware of the pressure of patriarchal power on women: no matter what kind of woman--traditional or progressive--the women in Poe's stories choose to be: they all suffer oppression from their lovers or destiny; in other words, Poe shows them as victims in a patriarchal world. Therefore, Poe did not ignore or loathe the progressive women in his stories and his understanding of females was similar to victimization.
