Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of Prominent Saint Louisans in 1916: A Portrait Work of Its Merchants, Manufacturers, Bankers and Professional Men, the Men Whose Energy and Ability Have Contributed Largely Toward Making St. Louis the Metropolis of the Great Mississippi Valley at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century We are living in a Golden Age. An age when changes come rapidly and are of intense moment. We are living in a wonderful country, a country where traditions are being made and customs established. A country of opportunity. Where the man who can do things has a chance to do them and can hope for a seat among the mighty. And St. Louis is alive to all the activity and progress which permeates our country and is doing her splendid share in the work. St. Louis is the vital. Throbbing heart of a wonderful section. With its beat vast districts are strengthened and on it thousands upon thousands are dependent. There are places where greater concentration of activity exists. But none where the spirit of upbuilding, the spirit of the Nation, more generally prevails among a people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notable St. Louisans in 1900: A Portrait Gallery of Men Whose Energy and Ability Have Contributed Largely Towards Making St. Louis the Commercial and Financial Metropolis of the West, Southwest and South Below each name will be found a brief title or description. For purposes Of uniformity these titles are limited to two lines, and an effort has been made to select such descriptions as are most up-to-date and distinctive. TO have enumerated every past and present Office Of some of those whose pictures are given would have required nearly a page Of space, and Would have changed the work from a portrait gallery _to a collection Of biographies. An alphabetical index of portraits is appended. In the body Of the work the classification is as accurate and complete as it was possible to make it, but' in a city of aggressiveness and public spirit, in which the leading men rally round every movement for the common good, and where exclusiveness is the exception rather than the rule, no plan Of classification by trades or professions can be invariably followed. The portraits are uniformly-good. More than Of them are from photographs taken expressly for this work by Mr. J. C. Strauss, who made a special sitting of each subject with but few exceptions. The half-tone engravings are by the Sanders Engraving Company of St. Louis, and the Columbia Engraving and Electrotype Company Of Chicago.
