Book Celebrated in Their Time

Download or read book Celebrated in Their Time written by Amy Pastan and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable gallery of portraits from the past represents a "who's who" of famous figures from nearly a century ago—Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, the Wright Brothers, and other celebrated individuals. Dating from 1910 through 1922, the collection features 112 rare images of luminaries from the worlds of politics, art, entertainment, and industry. These vintage portraits originated in the Library of Congress's Bain Archive, a compilation of photographs from an early news picture agency. Selected from thousands of glass negatives, these black-and-white prints offer rare images of icons from a bygone era: artists and musicians such as tenor Enrico Caruso, cellist Pablo Casals, dancer Isadora Duncan, and actress Sarah Bernhardt; silent movie stars Clara Bow, Rudolph Valentino, and Buster Keaton; authors Rudyard Kipling, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Leo Tolstoy; athletes Jack Johnson, Ty Cobb, and Jim Thorpe; magnates Andrew Carnegie, William Randolph Hearst, and Henry Ford; reformers Susan B. Anthony and Margaret Sanger; Soviet revolutionaries Lenin and Trotsky; several American presidents; and many others. Detailed captions accompany each photograph.

It sets out to be the standard, definitive reference work on the subject for years to come. Its coverage is global – an important ‘first’ in that authorities from all over the world have contributed their expertise and scholarship towards making this a truly comprehensive publication. The Encyclopedia presents new and ground-breaking research alongside accounts of the major established figures in the nineteenth century arena. Coverage includes all the key people, processes, equipment, movements, styles, debates and groupings which helped photography develop from being ‘a solution in search of a problem’ when first invented, to the essential communication tool, creative medium, and recorder of everyday life which it had become by the dawn of the twentieth century. The sheer breadth of coverage in the 1200 essays makes the Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography an essential reference source for academics, students, researchers and libraries worldwide.

Book excerpt: First published in 1978. In this title, Alan Thomas examines the invention of photography in the early nineteenth century. How the members of this first "visual" generation used photography and how it changed their perceptions of the world are the subjects of this lavishly illustrated book. As the author convincingly shows, the camera’s presence was felt nearly everywhere during the course of the nineteenth century. Approaching the subject topically, Thomas surveys the work of the early photographers in terms of its motivation, insights, and impact on society. The book is rounded out with sections on other genres of photography – theatrical, landscape, and social realism – that amply document the far-reaching impact of this phenomenon on nineteenth-century sensibilities.

Book Photojournalism and the Origins of the French Writer House Museum 1881 1914

Download or read book Photojournalism and the Origins of the French Writer House Museum 1881 1914 written by Elizabeth Emery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did writers' private homes become so linked to their work that contemporaries began preserving them as museums? Photojournalism and the Origins of the French Writer House Museum addresses this and other questions by providing an overview of the social forces that brought writers' homes to the forefront of the French imagination at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. This study analyzes representations of the apartments and houses of Corneille, Hugo, Balzac, Dumas, Sand, Zola, Loti, Montesquiou, Mallarm?and Proust, among others, arguing that the writer's home became a contested space and an important part of the French patrimony at this time. This is the first book to emphasize the house museum as an essentially modern construct, and to trace the history of ideas leading to its institutionalization in twentieth-century France. The interdisciplinary study also brings new attention to the importance of photojournalism for fin-de-si?e France - and brings to light fascinating and forgotten examples of 'at home' photography by Dornac and Henri Mairet. Elizabeth Emery provides a fresh and compelling perspective on conjunctions between visual, literary, and material cultures.
