Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits in Norfolk Houses, Vol. 1 He commenced this great work about 1903 (although long ere that time he had been especially interested in East Anglian portraiture), and carried it on almost continually till the end of 1913 and then a year or two later when he joined the forces, during the Great War, he commissioned me, using my own book on Suffolk Portraits as a guide, to write out for him the aforesaid notes, undoubtedly intending them to be ready for publication and he instructed me to add biographies, visiting when necessary his library at Blo' Norton, suggesting to me that I Should use The Complete Peerage and Baronetage by which work he loaned me for the purpose. In 1919, after he had returned from France, he revised some of the lists, making corrections and additions, hoping that ere long he would be able to publish the work at a price which would enable people with only limited incomes to purchase it but the cost of printing and publishing remained so long at a prohibitive price, the idea was abandoned. Three years ago there appeared to be a decided improvement in such matters, and the Prince, with interest renewed, took up the work again however, indifferent health, followed by impaired energy and strength, would not allow of his doing the same to his satisfaction, and his untimely death in 1926 brought it to an end. It seemed to me unthinkable that the Prince's invaluable labour of so many years Should remain dormant and almost useless, were the ms. Only to exist in a library, more especially as I knew that so many of his friends in the county and elsewhere were anxious to possess a copy of it, and be able to refer to it in future years so I determined to do my best to see it through the press, and render it available for use by the general public. I had been with him on so many of his visitations, I had discussed with him almost every interesting portrait, and I knew a great deal of his mind on the subject of portraiture in general that I felt I might be better able to do justice to his work than a stranger, however much more knowledge he might have on that extensive theme than I possessed. I trust, therefore, that my efforts in editing the work may be accepted and made use of in the same spirit in which they are here offered. His love for the mediaeval was inherited from his mother. His appreciation of beauty in art and music was alike inherited from Ranjit Singh, who, in later life, was surrounded by the most exquisite objets d'art of Persia, Kashmir, and the Punjab. Some of his tents were lined with crimson silk admirably embroidered in soft colours. His courtiers had to be superbly attired, but in his own dress he was restrained and wore but a few Choice jewels - the Koh-i-nur for its political Significance. Ranjit Singh Spent fabulous sums in acquiring the most beautiful horse of his time, which along with others was always kept where he could see them. He embellished several temples and gilded their roofs, making them Objects of radiant beauty. Music, which he loved, he heard each day on instruments of the most lovely tones. My brother in his school days, when spending his holidays at Elveden, would go for long rides by himself to look at churches and houses and would come back with glowing accounts of the interesting and beautiful things he had seen and the stories and legends connected with them. Book excerpt: In this, the first comprehensive study of post-Reformation provincial English portraiture, Robert Tittler investigates the growing affinity for secular portraiture in Tudor and early Stuart England, a cultural and social phenomenon which can be said to have produced a 'public' for that genre. He breaks new ground in placing portrait patronage and production in this era in the broad social and cultural context of post-Reformation England, and in distinguishing between native English provincial portraiture, which was often highly vernacular, and foreign-influenced portraiture of the court and metropolis, which tended towards the formal and 'polite'. Tittler describes the burgeoning public for portraiture of this era as more than the familiar court-and-London based presence, but rather as a phenomenon which was surprisingly widespread, both socially and geographically, throughout the realm. He suggests that provincial portraiture differed from the 'mainstream', cosmopolitan portraiture of the day in its workmanship, materials, inspirations, and even vocabulary, showing how its native English roots continued to guide its production. Innovative chapters consider the aims and vocabulary of English provincial portraiture, the relationship of portraiture and heraldry, the painter's occupation in provincial (as opposed to metropolitan) England, and the contrasting availability of materials and training in both provincial and metropolitan areas. The work as a whole contributes to both art history and social history: it speaks to admirers and collectors of painting as well as to curators and academics.
