Book The Hudson River School

Download or read book The Hudson River School written by Trewin Copplestone and published by Gramercy Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called Hudson River School has a place of special importance in the history of American painting. Although there were many 'professional' artists working in the early and developing American society from the 17th to the 19th centuries, most of them, apart from the many charming naive practitioners, were itinerant portrait painters or those who looked to Europe for their style and subject matter. It was not until the early 19th century that artists began to consider the landscape which surrounded them as an interesting subject in itself; when they did, they perceived a grandeur, spaciousness and quality of natural beauty which filled them with awe and wonderment. It was this opening of the eyes of their compatriots to their natural heritage that these painters, who have come to be known as the Hudson River School, initiated. Although, in the first instance, it was the area of the Hudson River stretching northwards from New York that first entranced them, as the American continent towards the Rockies unfolded, the artists followed and produced work that revealed a magnificence of scale—the great lakes, the towering mountains. deep valleys and gorges of the land in which they found themselves. In this way, although the Hudson River was the first area to exert its influence on these landscapists and gave its name to them, their work spread widely to encompass the whole land. There was also another, transcendental, aspect to their work. they recognized the hand of God in their new environment and accordingly introduced a sense of divine mission into their painting which appealed to the adventurous religious spirit of the early settlers. Through this, their art acquired a new significance which had previously been absent. The story of the artists and their pictorial crusade is included in this selective survey which, of its nature, can only include a small number of the very many who have been identified with the Hudson River School.

Book excerpt: An exploration of nineteenth-century American landscape painter Thomas Cole and the influential role of his studio for other artists of the Hudson River School. In December 1846, Thomas Cole excitedly began work in his new studio, but his early death left his great ambitions unfinished. His influence, both through works from his early career and ones he worked on in a self-designed studio during his final year, was truly profound for others who followed his example. In Thomas Cole's Studio: Memory and Inspiration, the artist's achievements and impact on future artists are described by renowned Cole scholar Franklin Kelly, along with contributions from three additional authors. Together, they offer a new understanding of the critical last phase of Cole's career and his lasting effect on other artists, as well as his unrealized ambitions.

Book Jervis McEntee

Download or read book Jervis McEntee written by Jervis McEntee and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jervis McEntee (1828¿1891) was a prominent member of the loosely connected group of American landscape painters known as the Hudson River School. He was greatly admired in the nineteenth century, but has not seen the resurgence in appreciation and public interest that artists like Cole, Asher B. Durand, and Church have received. McEntee studied under Frederic Edwin Church, the Hudson River School¿s most successful painter, was an artist-in-residence at the famous 10th Street Studio Building in New York City, and was a member of the National Academy of Design. He counted among his friends Sanford Gifford, Worthington Whittredge, Frederic Church, and Edwin Booth, assassin John Wilkes¿s brother and the foremost American actor of his time. His studio-cottage in Rondout (Kingston) was designed by another close friend, Calvert Vaux, one of the 19th-century¿s legendary architects and landscape designers, co-designer New York City¿s Central Park. McEntee was one of the most distinctive American landscape painters of the 19th century, but has not been sufficiently appreciated or accessible in modern times. McEntee today is remembered as much for the journal he kept as he is for his paintings. That journal, which McEntee faithfully recorded from 1872 to 1890, has become the most important record of the lives and concerns of the landscape painters of the Hudson River School. This book, with its 26 full-color paintings, includes a number of McEntee¿s works not previously seen by the public, as well as family photographs from several of his descendants, and is the first book to explore his life and work.

Book Robert S Duncanson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1821 to a Scottish Canadian father and an African American mother, Robert S. Duncanson is widely considered to be the first black artist to become world-famous. He began as a house painter and, from there, moved on to portraits and landscapes. A self-taught artist influenced by the Hudson River School of painters, Duncanson traveled throughout North America and Europe to hone his craft. By the 1860s, the press had dubbed him the "best landscape painter in the West." This was high praise given the fierce racial prejudice of the time. Unfortunately, mental health problems cut Duncanson's career and life short, but readers will still be inspired by this tremendously talented individual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of New York State is one of the most complete works on the Empire State to be published in a half-century. In nearly 2,000 pages and 4,000 signed entries, this single volume captures the impressive complexity of New York State as a historic crossroads of people and ideas, as a cradle of abolitionism and feminism, and as an apex of modern urban, suburban, and rural life. The Encyclopedia is packed with fascinating details from fields ranging from sociology and geography to history. Did you know that Manhattan's Lower East Side was once the most populated neighborhood in the world, but Hamilton County in the Adirondacks is the least densely populated county east of the Mississippi; New York is the only state to border both the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean; the Erie Canal opened New York City to rich farmland upstate . . . and to the west. Entries by experts chronicle New York's varied areas, politics, and persuasions with a cornucopia of subjects from environmentalism to higher education to railroads, weaving the state's diverse regions and peoples into one idea of New York State. Lavishly illustrated with 500 photographs and figures, 120 maps, and 140 tables, the Encyclopedia is key to understanding the state's past, present, and future. It is a crucial reference for students, teachers, historians, and business people, for New Yorkers of all persuasions, and for anyone interested in finding out more about New York State.
