Book Small rural Community Colleges

Download or read book Small rural Community Colleges written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph, commissioned by the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, presents information on the issues and practices of small and/or rural community colleges in the United States. Although a significant number of students enrolled in the nation's two-year colleges are attending small and rural colleges, there is a dearth of information about the qualities that make these institutions somewhat different from their larger urban counterparts. Frequently the research and resulting literature focus on larger, more financially developed systems that are on the cutting edge of innovation. This monograph was prepared to help create a basis of information from which additional research might be stimulated. The chapters include: (1) "Two-Year College Education on the Horizon" (G. Fisher); (2) "Economic Development" (D. Donato); (3) "Cultural and Civic Responsibility" (M. Weiss); (4) "High School Connections and Partnerships" (B. Thames); (5) "Literacy Practices" (J. Young); (6) "Uses of Technology" (R. Anderson); (7) "Resource Development" (J. Flower); and (8) "Commitment to Access" (J. Pickleman and M. Nigliazzo). (JCC)

Book Success Factors Among Community College Students in an Online Learning Environment

Download or read book Success Factors Among Community College Students in an Online Learning Environment written by Paula B. Doherty and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2000-08-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known about student success in online learning environments, especially how the predisposing characteristics that the learner brings to the learning environment may differentially affect student outcomes. This study explored the question of whether a student's "readiness" to be a self-directed learner is a predictor of student success in an online community college curriculum. The specific goal of this investigation was to determine whether there was a significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness-as measured by Guglielmino's (1977) Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS)- and student success-as measured by course completion, grade point average (GPA) and student satisfaction, the latter assessed by student responses to an opinion poll. The subjects of this study were community college students in the state of Washington, enrolled in one or more transfer-level online courses delivered via WashingtonONLINE (WAOL) during fall quarter 1999. Students who voluntarily chose to respond to two elective surveys comprised the study sample. A correlational research design was used to test the explanatory power of self-directed learning readiness and to describe the relationships between variables. Since this study was designed to test hypothesized relationships, the resulting correlation coefficients were interpreted in terms of their statistical significance. The expected outcome of this study was to confirm or disconfirm a statistically significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness and student success in an online community college curriculum. The findings of this study failed to achieve this outcome due to (1) the lack of statistical reliability of the SDLRS among the subject population; (2) the resulting lack of validity of the SDLRS among the study sample; (3) a nonresponse effect; and (4) a self-selection effect. The unanticipated outcome of this study was evidence that student perception of student/instructor interactions is a single variable predictor of student success among community college students in an online learning environment. Recommendations for further study include Web-specific research methodologies that address the potentially deleterious effects of nonresponse and self-selection in cyber-research environments and continued exploration of the multiple facets of student success in asynchronous learning domains.

Book Perceptions of Sense of Community of a Rural Community College

Download or read book Perceptions of Sense of Community of a Rural Community College written by Patricia Giero and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to provide knowledge of sense of community among traditional and nontraditional age students enrolled in online and traditional land-based learning environments. There is a gap in the literature regarding sense of community for students in different learning environments of rural community colleges. The author established the process of examining a sense of community for students of rural colleges. After reading the book, you will be able to take away information to be used to encourage course developers and online instructors to create and promote course activities that foster sense of community among students in online courses. Book Hiring the Next Generation of Faculty New Directions for Community Colleges Number 152

Download or read book Hiring the Next Generation of Faculty New Directions for Community Colleges Number 152 written by Cejda and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first chapter in this volume presents an overview of the faculty personnel challenges facing community colleges; the next three discuss the socialization and professional development of new faculty. Authors stress the importance of understanding differences among the typs of community colleges and the importance of gender and racial/thnic diversity among the facultry of the institutions who educate the majority of undergraduate females and students of color. The volume concludes with chapters on legal aspects related to the faculty employment and the experiences of presidents and senior instructional administrators, giving valuable guidance to those actively involved in the hiring process. At the heart of this volume is the continued commitment to the community college ideal of providing educational access and, through quality instruction, facilitating student learning and success. Previous research indicated that community college faculty retire at or near the traditional age of sixty-five. With an aging faculty, enrollments that are reaching unprecedented levels, and the federal goverment calling for the community college to take an even greater role in workforce training, community colleges will need to both replace significant portions of their faculty and hire additional faculty lines between now and 2020. This next hiring wave has implications for community colleges, the diverse student populations who attend these institutions, and society in general. This is the 152nd volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Community Colleges. Essential to the professional libraries of presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other leaders in today's open-door institutions, New Directions for Community Colleges provides expert guidance in meeting the challenges of their distinctive and expanding educational mission.
