Book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Download or read book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man written by James Joyce and published by Modernista. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man [1916] established James Joyce as a leading figure in literary modernism across Europe. The novel is set in the author’s homeland, Ireland, and narrates, in five episodes, the childhood of Stephen Dedalus. The plot is entirely based on Joyce’s own life and serves as a private manifesto, particularly through its sharp declaration of independence from Catholicism. Joyce pioneered a new way of writing novels, abandoning traditional narration for stream of consciousness and introducing his epiphanies—momentary revelations that, in their everydayness, hint at a larger context of life. Upon the recommendation of the American poet Ezra Pound, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was serialized in the magazine The Egoist in 1914/15 before being published as a book the following year. Today, more than a hundred years after its release, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is considered one of the most significant autobiographical texts in world literature. The Modern Library ranked it as the 3rd best English-language novel of the 20th century (with Joyce’s Ulysses as #1). JAMES JOYCE [1882-1941], Irish author, is a key figure in modernist literature with works such as Dubliners [1914], A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man [1916], and Ulysses [1922].

Book Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog Stories

Download or read book Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog Stories written by Dylan Thomas and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1968-01-17 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few writers have evoked as successfully, the mysteries and adventures of boyhood, of young love with its shattered dreams, or of death haunting two lads at play: none has done it in as fresh and telling phrases, with an elation as natural and contagious. The "Young Dog" of the title is of course Thomas himself, and this volume of autobiographical stories by the great modern poet, who died at 39 while on his third lecture tour in the United States, shows his waggish humor at its best, his exuberance and verbal magic in spectacular display. It also shows him a spinner of tales and a creator of memorable characters. There is the grandfather who marches off in his best clothes to be buried in the next town, the sardonic "senior reporter" on a provincial newspaper, servant girls who know how to deal triumphantly with a fast-talking dandy, a twenty-year-old farmer preaching wildly to boys in a deserted barn, a group of respectable worthies who play at literature behind closed blinds, and always the observant and unfazed young Thomas.

Download or read book Netop Friend written by Maureen Martin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isn't that- The impressionist Netop? Yes. I love his work! Who doesn't? Do you think-could I get his autograph? Time and again, Jacqueline Karch overhears the words-soft and hesitant, loud and bracing...always curious about the painter at her side. An artist in her own right, Karch crouches on her heels beside him, selecting his colors, exchanging one brush for another. "That's all I do," she says. "In every other aspect, Netop is totally protective of his paintings. He won't let me touch his canvas until it's completed. He's quite the divo." And why not? Netop has created his own art form. Call it neo-impressionism, abstract, modern, or canine-ism; it all stems from a dog's perspective. "His name," Karch explains, "comes from an Algonquin/Narragansett word meaning my friend. The early colonists used Netop (pronounced NEE-top) in greeting when meeting Native Americans." But it has of late come to mean artist, canine artist. Netop has created a singular niche-and he has a following. And when he's done, Netop is all dog-lolling on the floor, begging for a belly rub, flopped on the couch...content then, to be canine companion. Celebrity is great, but having a home is greater. Is that him? Yes. Netop...Dog. Artist. Friend.

Book Afterglow

Download or read book Afterglow written by Eileen Myles and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skinny's Book of the Year, 2018 In 1990, Myles chose Rosie from a litter on the street, and their connection instantly made an indelible impact on the writer's way of being. Over the course of sixteen years together, Myles was devoted to the pit bull and their linked quality of life. And starting from the emptiness following Rosie's death, Afterglow launches a playful and incisive investigation into the mostly mutually beneficial, sometimes reprehensible power dynamics between pet and pet-owner. At the same time, it reimagines Myles's experiences with alcoholism and recovery, intimacy and mourning, celebrity and politics, spirituality and family history, while joyously transcending the parameters of memoir. Moving from an imaginary talk show where Rosie is interviewed by Myles's childhood puppet, to a critical reenactment of the night Rosie mated with another pit bull; from shimmering poetic transcriptions of video footage taken during their walks, to Rosie's final enlightened narration from the afterlife, this totally singular text combines elements of science fiction, screenplay, monologue, and lucid memory to get to the heart of how and why we dedicate our existence to our dogs.
