Book At Gettysburg and Elsewhere Expanded Annotated

Download or read book At Gettysburg and Elsewhere Expanded Annotated written by General John Gibbon and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important figures of the American Civil War penned this fascinating and unique memoir. John Gibbon's recollections of his service at Gettysburg and other great battles is frank and personal. This is not an overview of great battles but a soldier's account of the trials and triumphs of four years of horrific conflict. Gibbon wrote plainly about the great men with whom he served, some of whom he greatly admired and some who were difficult. Here are anecdotes of Lincoln, Grant, Meade, Hancock, Hooker, Pope, and many others that you won't read anywhere else. Gibbon was a central figure at Gettysburg, with Pickett's Charge aimed right at the forces he commanded. Wounded on the third day of the battle, he supplemented his memoir with portions of the outstanding narrative of that day by his aide, Lieutenant Frank Haskell. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Book excerpt: In early summer 1864, the entire region of central Virginia was engulfed in the flames of war. As Grant's Federal army pushed ever south, trading battles and bodies with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, forces came to a head at the Battle of Totopotomoy Creek. Though overshadowed by the proceeding Battle of Cold Harbor, Totopotomoy Creek exemplified the bloody skirmishes of the entire Overland Campaign. Polegreen Church and its eighteenth-century hero Samuel Davies offer an example of the destruction the war brought to central Virginia. Join author Robert Bluford as he incorporates diaries, regimental histories and other primary sources to detail the heroism of famed Civil War participants Winfield Hancock, Jubal Early, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee and many more.

Book John Gibbon and His Heart Lung Machine

Download or read book John Gibbon and His Heart Lung Machine written by Ada Romaine-Davis and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Heysham Gibbon, Jr., M.D., was the first researcher to develop a heart-lung machine that could fully support an adult's cardiac and respiratory functions during surgical procedures to repair defects in the heart and lungs. The difficulty of such a task can be seen in the number of people who attempted it for over a century: the list is long. Gibbon succeeded on May 6, 1953, when he repaired an atrial-septal defect with the patient supported entirely by the machine for 27 minutes. Ada Romaine-Davis contends that few realize how long Gibbon worked to achieve this success. To rectify the situation, Romaine-Davis here provides a thorough study of Gibbon and his accomplishment. She shows how Gibbon overcame discouragement from his peers and mentors and obtained crucial support from IBM Board Chairman Thomas Watson. She examines each of the models produced by Gibbon and puts his achievement into historical perspective. Gibbon himself chose not to pursue cardiac surgery; he remained a thoracic surgeon. Others went on to develop the knowledge and skills that today make open-heart surgery as safe as other major surgical procedures. As Romaine-Davis amply demonstrates, these pioneers stand on the shoulders of a stubborn, persevering, single-minded genius whose determination to leave a legacy to his profession resulted in the one thing essential for sustained progress in heart surgery: John Gibbon's heart-lung machine. This meticulously researched study will make fascinating reading for physicians—especially surgeons—as well as for students and scholars of medical history and science and technology.

Book Custer s Last Stand Portraits in Time

Download or read book Custer s Last Stand Portraits in Time written by Charles A. Mills and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his death along the bluffs overlooking the Little Bighorn River, in Montana, on June 25, 1876, over five hundred books have been written about the life and career of George Armstrong Custer. Views of Custer have changed over succeeding generations. Custer has been portrayed as a callous egotist, a bungling egomaniac, a genocidal war criminal, and the puppet of faceless forces. For almost one hundred and fifty years, Custer has been a Rorschach test of American social and personal values. Whatever else George Armstrong Custer may or may not have been, even in the twenty-first century, he remains the great lightning rod of American history. This book presents portraits of Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn as they have appeared in print over successive decades and in the process demonstrates the evolution of American values and priorities.
