Book excerpt: The book centres on a mass family clearance of thirteen families from their homesteads in Rathcore, a small rural village situated in south county Meath. The circumstances surrounding those evictions bore all the hallmarks of extremely poor landlord-tenant relations. Central to an understanding of the period was a drastic fall in tillage farming practices throughout Ireland, and the corresponding expansion of livestock/grassland farming, particularly so, in the provinces of Munster and Leinster. This shift in agricultural land-use had serious implications for social structure all across post-famine Ireland. The 1865 Rathcore evictions aims to provide an insight into the whole complex nature of the landlord-tenant relationship in Rathcore, set to a backdrop and a period in time in which a trend facilitated by an expansion of land under grass was well under-way in County Meath from the mid-nineteenth century.

By the mid-1840s it was firmly established with its schools, reclaimed farmland and luxuriant crops. Secondary settlements were also established at Mweelin and on the island of Inishbiggle. However, very strong opposition to these developments came from the Roman Catholic archbishop of Tuam, and the priests he sent to the island. The great famine and its impact on the Mission, the departure of its founder Edward Nangle together with the falling off of voluntary contributions and emigration to the colonies and America, all contributed to the final collapse of this Protestant missionary experiment.

Several agents kept him well informed and in the years between 1757 and the earlÃ?Â?Ã?Â-s death in 1789, one of them, also named James Hamilton, wrote very detailed letters that enabled the earl to make decisions on a wide variety of matters. They cover changing relationships with tenants and undertenants, efforts to promote the economic and social development of the estate, and the problems of his agents in coping with food crises and natural disasters.
