Book The Unequalled Collection of Engraved Portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte and His Family and Marshals Belonging to Hon James T Mitchell Chief Justice of Pennsylvania

Download or read book The Unequalled Collection of Engraved Portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte and His Family and Marshals Belonging to Hon James T Mitchell Chief Justice of Pennsylvania written by James Tyndale Mitchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unequalled Collection of Engraved Portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte and His Family and Marshals, Belonging to Hon. James T. Mitchell, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania: Embracing the Most Important Collection of Portraits in Mezzotinto, Aquatint, Line and Stipple; Including Many Printed in Colors as Well as Choice Proofs, Also the Extraordinary Collection of Caricatures on Napoleon by Cruikshank, Gillray, Rowlandson As in the case of the Engraved portraits of Washington, the whole world has been ransacked in the search for Portraits of Napoleon Buonaparte. The wonderful rise of the Corsican youth to the throne of France, History has marked as an Epoch not to be surpassed. His ambition, courage and great generalship, whiche made him virtually conqueror of the old world, have imbued us with a Spirit of awe, akin to veneration; so much so, that even those who are pleased to condemn him, are as much interested in collecting his portraits as are his most ardent admirers, and this spirit has extended not only over all Europe, but has crossed the ocean, and we here in America find pleasure in accumulating portraits, caricatures and mementos of this greatest character in European history, and like our Washington, his. Portrait will be found in almost every household; consequently it is almost impossible today to make a collection of the portraits of Napoleon of any considerable account, and it is only when an opportunity like this is offered that we are enabled to possess ourselves of the rarer specimens. Chief Justice Mitchell was one of the earliest and most enthusiastic collectors in this line, and during the last forty or fifty years has gathered many portraits of Napoleon, members of his family, and of his marshals, of the greatest rarity, and at the same time exhibiting examples of the Engraver's Art in Mezzotinto, Aquatint, Line and Stipple, not to be surpassed, and including a great number of choice specimens of the long-lost art of printing in colors. The Collection of Caricatures is of the greatest interest and the most important in this country. They really depict a complete political history of the great Napoleon, through the spectacles of the English, French, Italian, German and other nations of Europe. Many of them, especially the Eng lish, are of the most vulgar character, while not a few serve to eulogize the wonderful deeds of this truly great man. We have considered it unnecessary to mention any particular print, as there are so many rarities, and in cataloging them we have classified them in such a manner that they can readily be discerned. The descriptions are correct, and the index will afford a ready reference for those interested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Rodenberg inventively uses Bonaparte’s own unfinished novel to tell the story of the despot’s rise to power, which she juxtaposes against the story of his last love affair. Told creatively and with excellent research!” —Stephanie Dray, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of America's First Daughter and The Women of Chateau Lafayette “Beautiful and poignant.” —Allison Pataki, New York Times best-selling author of The Queen’s Fortune With its delightful adaptation of Napoleon Bonaparte’s real attempt to write romantic fiction, Finding Napoleon: A Novel offers a fresh take on Europe’s most powerful man after he’s lost everything—except his last love. A forgotten woman of history—the audacious Countess Albine—helps narrate their tale of intrigue, desire, and betrayal. After the defeated Emperor Napoleon goes into exile on tiny St. Helena Island in the remote South Atlantic, he and his lover, Albine de Montholon, plot to escape and rescue his young son. Banding together enslaved Africans, British sympathizers, a Jewish merchant, a Corsican rogue, and French followers, they confront British opposition—as well as treachery within their own ranks—with sometimes subtle, sometimes bold, but always desperate action. Amid his passions and intrigues, Napoleon finishes his real novel Clisson that he started writing as a young man. Now it's a father's message to the young son whom his enemies took from him, but how can they get it to the boy? When Napoleon and Albine break faith with one another, ambition and Albine’s husband threaten their reconciliation. To succeed, Napoleon must learn whom to trust. To survive, Albine must decide whom to betray. This elegant, richly researched novel reveals the Napoleon history conceals and the Countess Albine history has forgotten.

Book Napoleon The Portrait of a King

Download or read book Napoleon The Portrait of a King written by R. McNair Wilson and published by Bowen Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book A Life of Napoleon Boneparte Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Life of Napoleon Boneparte Classic Reprint written by Ida M. Tarbell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of Napoleon Boneparte After a portrait by Greuze. This portrait was exhibited at the "Exposition des portraits du Siecle," at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, in 1893. ("No. III - Bonaparte, Lieutenant d'Artillerie - par Greuze, Jean Baptiste. Collection de M. le Marquis de Las Cases.") As this is reputed to be the earliest portrait of Napoleon in existence, Mr. Hubbard wrote to the Marquis de Las Cases asking its history. In September, 1894, he received a letter, from which the following is quoted: "Madame du Colombier had the portrait of Lieutenant Bonaparte painted in 1791 by Greuze, who was going through Valence, and who was then fifty-eight years old. The portrait afterwards passed to Madame de Bressieux, her daughter, and it was only upon the death of Madame de Bressieux, in 1847, that my uncle was able to secure the picture, which he left to me."
