Book excerpt: David Blackthorn, the scion of a powerful family of the Northern Republic, has discovered a great potential to harness God’s Power, a capability that supposedly only priests can possess. So he travels to the land of the Chanche, to ask for their help in controlling his new-found ability. But in Akzo, the “city of cities” of the Chanche, he is advised that only Ques, a recluse living high in the mountains, can train him. David undertakes a harrowing journey, beset by enemies, to reach Ques. He is prepared to undergo training for as long as it takes to master the Power in order to defeat the deadly Elitos, who threaten both the Chanche and his native land in the plains. There is just one problem: The training will be every bit as dangerous as the Power itself.

Even the Heavens are shaken by these events, and new trouble is brewing within the halls of Dis, the great citadel of hell. In the midst of these events, three individuals are thrust into a celestial conflict involving angels, fallen ones, demons, and humans: Elenei, a Principality of the Heavens sent to Earth to pursue a murderer from hell; Adrian, a basketball varsity hooligan whose lover’s death makes him question his purpose; and Nate, a college student who will not think twice to get into a brawl to protect his friends. But when a divine mishap threatens the salvation of human souls, how will these three manage an uneasy alliance and face an impending infernal threat that can potentially defeat the angels for good?

Book Prairie Fire

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julie Courtwright
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2023-01-13
  • ISBN : 0700635130
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Prairie Fire written by Julie Courtwright and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prairie fires have always been a spectacular and dangerous part of the Great Plains. Nineteenth-century settlers sometimes lost their lives to uncontrolled blazes, and today ranchers such as those in the Flint Hills of Kansas manage the grasslands through controlled burning. Even small fires, overlooked by history, changed lives-destroyed someone's property, threatened someone's safety, or simply made someone's breath catch because of their astounding beauty. Julie Courtwright, who was born and raised in the tallgrass prairie of Butler County, Kansas, knows prairie fires well. In this first comprehensive environmental history of her subject, Courtwright vividly recounts how fire-setting it, fighting it, watching it, fearing it-has bound Plains people to each other and to the prairies themselves for centuries. She traces the history of both natural and intentional fires from Native American practices to the current use of controlled burns as an effective land management tool, along the way sharing the personal accounts of people whose lives have been touched by fire. The book ranges from Texas to the Dakotas and from the 1500s to modern times. It tells how Native Americans learned how to replicate the effects of natural lightning fires, thus maintaining the prairie ecosystem. Native peoples fired the prairie to aid in the hunt, and also as a weapon in war. White settlers learned from them that burns renewed the grasslands for grazing; but as more towns developed, settlers began to suppress fires-now viewed as a threat to their property and safety. Fire suppression had as dramatic an environmental impact as fire application. Suppression allowed the growth of water-wasting trees and caused a thick growth of old grass to build up over time, creating a dangerous environment for accidental fires. Courtwright calls on a wide range of sources: diary entries and oral histories from survivors, colorful newspaper accounts, military weather records, and artifacts of popular culture from Gene Autry stories to country song lyrics to Little House on the Prairie. Through this multiplicity of voices, she shows us how prairie fires have always been a significant part of the Great Plains experience-and how each fire that burned across the prairies over hundreds of years is part of someone's life story. By unfolding these personal narratives while looking at the bigger environmental picture, Courtwright blends poetic prose with careful scholarship to fashion a thoughtful paean to prairie fire. It will enlighten environmental and Western historians and renew a sense of wonder in the people of the Plains.

Book The Scrophulariaceae of Eastern Temperate North America

Download or read book The Scrophulariaceae of Eastern Temperate North America written by Francis Whittier Pennell and published by Academy of Natural Sciences. This book was released on 1935 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was originally planned to follow certain regional papers with a similar account of the family Scrophulariaceae (figwort or foxglove family) for the Middle Atlantic & N. Central States. But it soon seemed preferable to include the southern Appalachians & the whole Atlantic Coastal Plain. The flora of the northern states has been profoundly modified by the glacial epoch, & any understanding of the composition & distribution of our northern flora should also consider the adjoining southern territory where vegetation was little or not affected & from which the north was again populated. So, it was decided to include again the South Atlantic & the West Gulf States. The plan of this study is both more thorough & more comprehensive than earlier efforts. Illus.

Once a shy, willowy scholar, he has become, due to his manipulation of God’s Power, a giant of a man, with incredible abilities and the capacity to rule the known world. But he faces a multitude of problems. Two of the countries in the plains refuse to acknowledge his leadership. The Elitos, a northern faction of the mountain-dwelling Chanche nation, where Davin learned to subdue and control his abilities, have declared war on their southern brethren and refuse to ally with the rest of the nation to support Davin. Davin prepares armies to face those of the eastern plains nations, and their Elito allies in the mountains. Complicating the situation, the Elitos have also allied with an alien species who exist in another dimension, and who covet Davin’s world for an expansion of their empire. Can he defeat this massive alliance, forced to fight on multiple fronts? Or has he finally reached the limit of God’s Power?

The Tappan Zee Bridge is a major transportation link to the New York City Metropolitan Regional Area as well as to the New England Regional Area. This delemma epitomizes transportation issues faced by other large regional metropolitan areas throughout the world.
