Book Century a People s History of Charlotte County A

Download or read book Century a People s History of Charlotte County A written by James Abraham and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is full of eddies and currents, but certain themes emerge that give a community clues to both its future and its past. For example, Charlotte County was born in the cockpit of rapid social change, propelled from the Jazz Age into the Great Depression. Communities like Englewood or Cleveland with dreams of becoming metropolises lost their city charters when the music stopped and the well ran dry. Boom and bust. The cycle continued as a construction boom transformed the county during the second half of the 20th century before the major developer of Port Charlotte went belly up.Vernon Peeples, the late, great preeminent historian of Punta Gorda, told me how city founder Isaac Trabue brought the railroad to what was then called Trabue. Soon the railroad backed a play by Trabue's enemies to swallow up his town and give it the name we know today. Now, if Allegiant Airlines can open Sunseeker's doors, we'll see a second revolution spawned by the transportation industry. And that's no coincidence. Punta Gorda was once the southernmost point of the entire North American railroad system, with shipping links south and west to Cuba and New Orleans. Allegiant has capitalized on our proximity to the Midwest and our beckoning breezes. The railroad built the legendary Punta Gorda Hotel, the 19th century version of destination resort travel. Allegiant's Sunseeker may be the 21st century version of that iconic job generator. Geography is our destiny. Now, as we try to make a new society in the face of the deadliest pandemic to strike our community, is not the time to hide our voices. Now is the time to tell our stories. Here is the place to celebrate the people who made Charlotte County's first century

Book excerpt: Florida has long been a beacon for retirees, but for many, the American dream of owning a home there was a fantasy. That changed in the 1950s, when the so-called "installment land sales industry" hawked billions of dollars of Florida residential property, sight unseen, to retiring northerners. For only $10 down and $10 a month, working-class pensioners could buy a piece of the Florida dream: a graded home site that would be waiting for them in a planned community when they were ready to build. The result was Cape Coral, Port St. Lucie, Deltona, Port Charlotte, Palm Coast, and Spring Hill, among many others—sprawling communities with no downtowns, little industry, and millions of residential lots. In The Swamp Peddlers, Jason Vuic tells the raucous tale of the sale of residential lots in postwar Florida. Initially selling cheap homes to retirees with disposable income, by the mid-1950s developers realized that they could make more money selling parcels of land on installment to their customers. These "swamp peddlers" completely transformed the landscape and demographics of Florida, devastating the state environmentally by felling forests, draining wetlands, digging canals, and chopping up at least one million acres into grid-like subdivisions crisscrossed by thousands of miles of roads. Generations of northerners moved to Florida cheaply, but at a huge price: high-pressure sales tactics begat fraud; poor urban planning begat sprawl; poorly-regulated development begat environmental destruction, culminating in the perfect storm of the 21st-century subprime mortgage crisis.

Book excerpt: Ocean breezes. Tropical islands. All accessible by bicycle or on foot along the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, a 109-mile bike route from Key West to Key Largo. This book is a mile-by-mile guide for you to explore the Florida Keys under your own power while following the Overseas Heritage Trail across dozens of historic railroad bridges and past lengthy ocean panoramas that only the Florida Keys can offer.Going by bike or by foot means taking the Florida Keys at a leisurely pace, savoring the journey, and discovering natural places and historic sites that visitors in cars simply whiz right past without realizing what they're missing. It also means that the trail slips back into history and nature along Old US 1 on some of the islands, taking you away from the highway to offer up views of mangrove marshes, salt flats, and wide open turquoise waters. On a bicycle, you can more easily take advantage of the side trips we mention throughout the guide, to better enjoy the "off the beaten path" corners of the Florida Keys.Throughout the guide, we provide details as to when you do and don't have a bike path to follow, information on campgrounds and inexpensive lodgings along the route, and recommendations for more luxurious stays at resorts and hotels. We share our favorites among the many eateries in the Keys as well. You'll learn about parks and natural areas along the route, and a little history about the Overseas Railroad, which shut down in 1935. The trail mostly follows its route. This is a trail guide, and a travel guide. In addition to the mile-by-mile descriptions of every waypoint of interest along the Overseas Heritage Trail, you'll find out how to connect to the mainland by bicycle or on foot, how to get you and your bicycle to Key West from the Miami airport, and where the bike shops are along the route. We list bike shops and outfitters who rent bicycles for the ride, as well.

Book excerpt: Large landholders sold property in this unknown paradise to working-class people, and since the 1950s, Port Charlotte has had a colorful history of progress. In the '50s, General Development Corporation created Port Charlotte by expanding the canals previously dug by John Murdock to drain the swampy land. The Mackle Company carved Arthur Frizzell's 80,000 acres into small, perfectly rectangular lots for resale to middle-class retirees--the targets of mass advertising and sales practices that included displaying models of Port Charlotte in department stores throughout Chicago and New York. Encouraging retirees to come to Port Charlotte resulted in the area having one of the highest concentrations of residents aged 65 and older in the nation. Port Charlotte's boom-and-bust history is a microcosm of the frenzied social and economic growth that transformed Florida in the second half of the 20th century.

Download or read book American Christmas written by Danelle Manthey and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Christmas is a new book by photographer Danelle Manthey that examines Christmas displays, and the people behind them, through the lens of American folk art. Through portraits and interviews, the book features the stories of over 40 families and individuals across 12 states. It includes text by Marlene Friis, a foreword from Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, Founder and Director of the American Visionary Art Museum and an introduction by Mark Sloan, Curator and Chief Director of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.Over the course of a decade, Manthey photographed, interviewed and spent time with the creators of these displays, quickly coming to recognize them as folk artists. Entirely self-taught, the creators often do not view themselves as artists, yet create visceral, site-specific installations that should be recognized for their transcendent, highly skilled craft. Many of the selected displays feature region-specific motifs as well as handmade decorations. This tendency, coupled with the traditional imagery and decorative nature of the displays, situates the work as a form of contemporary American folk art. Many of the featured individuals and families seem driven to create utopian spaces through their displays, which is a common theme among folk artists. "The truly amazing thing about these American grassroots artists, all of whom became bitten by the pine-scented Christmas bug, lies in the diversity of their motivations," explains Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, Founder and Director of the American Visionary Art Museum. Through the act of photographing the displays, Manthey enshrines them as a distinct art form. Where many would diminish the works as decorative cheer, Manthey looks beyond to reveal the innovation and commitment that grounds all great art. Along with making these themes accessible to a non-art audience, she succeeds in sharing the community and joy these works are founded on-something that is much needed in our current world.
