This period was the beginning of a highly conflictive social process as a result of the imposition of neoliberal policies. Its focus is on the life and work of Pancho Jaime (1946-1989), the most controversial and widely known rock promoter and independent journalist. Between 1984 and his assassination in 1989, Jaime's underground publications used in-depth investigation as well as gossip, pornographic cartoons, and obscene language to comment on democracy and the corruption of political elites. Jaime's strategy was to denounce the conduct of powerful figures in public office, and caricaturize their deformed bodies as indexes of their supposedly "deviant" sexuality. Following contemporary and comparative discussions on the political economy of images, and the materiality of image-objects, X. Andrade analyzes the production, circulation, and consumption of Pancho Jaime's political magazines, audience responses to grotesque visual and aggressive textual discourses, and the effects of revealing public secrets about popular understandings of politics.

Russia, now faced with the challenge of becoming a democracy and shaking off an authoritarian past, must face questions of administrative response in many varied and different ways. These challenges are far from new and have been faced by all other democratic states. Pornography challenges notions of democracy because it presents a clear conflict of self-determination and state interest. It is colored by issues of morality and religion, and it is addressed by critics of democracy from the right and the left. The work begins by identifying four Western theoretical approaches to the issue of obscenity and uncovering their strengths and weaknesses, particularly in terms of their relationship to democracy. The traditional debate over pornographic materials has been defined by two opposing camps--religious conservatives and libertarians--who themselves reflect the traditional differences of classical and modern philosophy respectively. Neither side lends itself well to contemporary democratization debates. Modern democratic societies rely upon a more recent set of debates formulated in the nineteenth century by communists and anarchists and reflected in the debate over legislating pornography by two competing camps of feminists. These four positions form basic paradigms that can be used not only to understand debates over pornography, but also all types of conflicts in democracy. The dissertation then discusses the social and historical context of Russia itself, examining the sexual culture, pornographic tradition, and legacy of state control in Russia. Patterns of Russian censorship are analyzed and found to be lacking both ideological clarity and effectiveness. The reasons for legislative failure are deconstructed and identified with failures of anti-pornography policy common in the West. Alternative approaches and legislative reforms are also discussed. In conclusion, observations are made about the viability of legislative reform and the general process of democratization in Russia.

The internet is often rumored to consist only of content related to either cats or porn, but it is true that no other genre has benefited from the internet as much as the porn branch. As a computer user, one is literally just clicks apart from the biggest collection of the digital lust serving any possible fantasy without being exposed to a judging public. Online pornography has become more private and anonymous than ever before, but on the other hand it has generated an intense public debate. This essay examines how and why debates on pornography emerged in the western world and what the actual subjects, motifs and arguments of the controversy are.

Book excerpt: "This book assesses American, Canadian, and Swedish legal challenges to the explosive spread of pornography within their significantly different democratic systems and constructs a political and legal theory for effectively challenging the sex industry under law. The obstacles to this challenge are exposed as more ideological and political than strictly legal, although they often play out in the legal arena. The pornography industry is documented to exploit vulnerable populations in making its materials. A thorough analytical review of empirical studies using complementing methods demonstrates that using pornography substantially contributes to consumers becoming more sexually aggressive, on average desensitizing them and contributing to a demand for more subordinating, aggressive, and degrading materials. Consumers are also often found wishing to imitate pornography with unwilling partners; many demand sex from prostituted people, who have few or no alternatives. Most young men regularly consume pornography. Legal challenges to the harms are shown to be more effective under legal systems that promote equality and when the laws empower those most harmed, in contrast to state-enforced regulations (e.g., criminal obscenity laws). Drawing on feminist theory, among others, this book argues that pornography is among the linchpins of sex inequality, contending that a civil society forum can empower those harmed, with representatives who have more substantial incentives to address them. This book explains why democracies fail to address the harms of pornography and offers a political and legal theory for making the necessary changes. The insights can be applied to other intractable problems of hierarchy"--

Christopher Achen and Larry Bartels deploy a wealth of social-scientific evidence, including ingenious original analyses of topics ranging from abortion politics and budget deficits to the Great Depression and shark attacks, to show that the familiar ideal of thoughtful citizens steering the ship of state from the voting booth is fundamentally misguided. They demonstrate that voters—even those who are well informed and politically engaged—mostly choose parties and candidates on the basis of social identities and partisan loyalties, not political issues.
