Book excerpt: This volume describes Telaquana Trail, an ancient pathway ascending from the shores of Qizhjeh Vena, Lake Clark, through tundra and timbered valleys, into a high-elevation expanse of rolling tundra and smaller interior lakes nearly 50 miles north of Lake Clark. The pathway is an ancestral corridor used by Native peoples since the beginning of remembered time. The name "Telaquana Trail" first appears in the written record by no later than 1921, when Colonel A.J. Macnab, one of the first outsiders to visit the area for recreational big game hunting, mentioned taking a canoe to "go down the lake to look for the Telaquana Trail." Stephen Capps of the U.S. Geological Survey traveled and mapped the area in 1929. Producing the first detailed public map of the trail, Capps marks it as the "Native Route." As Dena'ina interviewees will attest, non-Native travel along the trail by this date was ample, but the corridor was still largely conceived of as Native space. Today, as the traces of significantly Anglo-American mining and trapping communities fade from the landscape, Dena'ina people still look to the trail corridor as a touchstone for their shared history and a cosmological axis of their own unique cultural geography. In the homes of Dena'ina people today, the landmarks of the Telaquana Trail are still remembered and the names of these places still spoken.

Book excerpt: DEDICATED TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN BOARD LEADERSIn 2018, California passed a senate bill (SB 826) to require publicly held companies headquartered in CA to have at least one woman on their board by 2020. In 2020, Nasdaq proposed a mandate that would require listed companies to have at least two diverse board members with one member who identifies as female. Initiatives like these are helping advance gender parity on boards in many regions, not just the U.S. In late 2020, women held 22.6% of the board seats on the Russell 3000 for the first time, a 6.5 point jump over the past 4 years.Zooming out to the global scale, the picture is similarly improving. In 2020, about 23% of board seats globally were held by women, compared to 20% in 2018. Yet...at the time of this writing, 10% of large global companies do not have a single woman on their board. And the percent of women who chair boards is dramatically smaller. Among the largest 500 public U.S. companies by revenue the share of women who chaired boards remained stagnant at 7.4%. Notably, of those women who chair boards, few of them use the term Chairwoman in their bios or LinkedIn profiles-opting for monikers Chairman, or Board Chair, or occasionally Chairperson. This book features the extraordinary voices and stories of women leaders from around the world who have trailblazed to the board room, as letters to the next generation of women in business and government. Ernest S. Burch Jr. illuminates one aspect of the traditional lives of the I_upiaq Eskimos in unparalleled detail and depth. Basing his account on observations made by early Western explorers, interviews with Native historians, and archeological research, Burch describes the social boundaries and geographic borders formerly existing in Northwest Alaska and the various kinds of transactions that took place across them. These ranged from violence of the most brutal sort, at one extreme, to relations of peace and friendship, at the other.
