Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updates the conservation status of Ord's kangaroo rat, Dipodomys ordii, a nocturnal rodent adapted to dry environments that is found in Canada only in sand hill areas of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, at the northern limit of its range. Information is included on kangaroo rat geographic distribution, population size and trends, protection status, habitat, general biology, factors limiting the rat population size and distribution, and the special significance of the species for Canada. Concludes with discussion of the current consensus regarding the status of the species and a proposed designation of the species as vulnerable, with the rationale for such a status.

Book An Occurrence based Habitat Model for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Ordii in Alberta

Download or read book An Occurrence based Habitat Model for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Ordii in Alberta written by Darren J. Bender and published by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. This book was released on 2010 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ord's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii) is considered an endangered species, and is the only kangaroo rat to occur in Canada. The Recovery Plan for Ord's kangaroo rat in Alberta identifies a number of activities necessary for recovery, including identification of distribution, habitat requirements, and essential habitat. This report presents information on the current distribution and habitat requirements for the species across Alberta, using statistical modeling to identify key habitat features from the Ord's kangaroo rat occurrences observed in two years of standard population monitoring. Two goals were intended for the study: to produce a habitat model that could estimate the distribution of the kangaroo rat habitat across its range and predict the species' occurrence in Alberta; and to validate the model using population monitoring data obtained in the subsequent years with reporting on the predictive capacity of the model.--Document.

Book Monitoring Protocol for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat

Download or read book Monitoring Protocol for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat written by Darren J. Bender and published by Fish & Wildlife Service. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ord's kangaroo rat is a nocturnal rodent that occurs in Canada as a northern population that is geographically isolated from the southern conspecifics. In Alberta, it occurs in the vacinity of the Middle Sand Hills north of Medicine Hat. This population of kangaroo rats is currently recognized as Endangered due to extreme fluctuations such that the population crashes to fewer than 1000 animals in harsh winters. The Alberta Recovery Plan for Ord's kangaroo rat calls for standardized population monitoring as a high priority recovery activity. The purpose is to establish a long-term database that supports defensible, inter-annual comparisons of distribution, relative abundance, and survival. This document provides a detailed population monitoring protocol to serve as a guide for implementation of long-term, standardized monitoring for Ord's kangaroo rat in Alberta.--Document.

Book Translocation Protocol for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat Dipodmys Ordii

Download or read book Translocation Protocol for the Ord s Kangaroo Rat Dipodmys Ordii written by Darren J. Bender and published by Alberta Environment. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ord's kangaroo rat is a rare, nocturnally-active rodent distributed through the Middle Sand Hills and surrounding sandy regions of southeast Alberta. Research has identified the location of habitats for the Ord's kangaroo rat in Alberta, including a number of isolated patches of natural habitat. This report provides recommended methods for translocating Ord's kangaroo rats in Alberta based on the successes and limitations observed in previous studies, with particular consideration of the unique properties of the Alberta population. This report also describes knowledge gaps and recommended research that should be undertaken to determine whether Ord's kangaroo rat translocations can be used in Alberta to mitigate population decline and local extirpation of isolated habitats.--Document.

Book Habitat Assessment of an Inland Population of the Gulf Coast Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Compactus

Download or read book Habitat Assessment of an Inland Population of the Gulf Coast Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Compactus written by Jennifer P. Oakley and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I conducted a habitat assessment on an inland population of the Gulf Coast kangaroo rat (Dipodomys compactus) located in Guadalupe County, Texas. Previous research on the Padre Island population of the Gulf Coast kangaroo rat has shown the species to inhabit open areas with deep sand and little vegetation, essentially barren sand dunes. However, this distinct habitat type does not occur inland and yet the species is found in certain areas of inland south Texas. The goal of my study was to determine if the northernmost known population of D. compactus retains the species affinity for deep sparsely-vegetated sand habitat. My study site was the Diamond Half Ranch consisting of approximately 2303.3 ha, located 16 km south of Seguin, Texas. In order to assess the habitat associations of this inland Gulf Coast kangaroo rat population, 57 points were semi-randomly located across the study site. At each of these points, I used the Daubenmire frame technique to record the percent of ground cover for grass, forbs, small woody plants, litter (dead herbaceous material), and bare substrate (soil, rock) within a 10 m circle centered on the point. I also recorded the average height of the tallest plants, the average tree canopy present at each point using a spherical densiometer, and the number of active (uncluttered opening, feces, tracks, etc) burrow openings. Data were collected in May 2011, August 2011, November 2011, and February 2012.

Book Habitat Availability Assessment for the Gulf Coast Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Compactus in South central Texas

Download or read book Habitat Availability Assessment for the Gulf Coast Kangaroo Rat Dipodomys Compactus in South central Texas written by Laura M Bliss and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the human population increases worldwide, urbanization, habitat destruction, and habitat modification also increase. Recently the urbanization rate in Central Texas has become one of the highest in the nation. The consequential loss of natural habitat could jeopardize native wildlife species that are already somewhat limited in their distribution. Based on specialized life-history traits that limit large-scale mobility, kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spp.) have been found to be especially sensitive to urbanization-induced habitat modification and fragmentation. Dipodomys compactus is one of five kangaroo rat species found in Texas; this species has narrow, specific habitat requirements. Using a geographic information system (GIS)-based habitat suitability model, I determined that due to isolation among suitable habitat patches, actual D. compactus range in south-central Texas is highly fragmented, and the particular population in south-central Texas may be more isolated than currently thought. The assessment strategy of GIS habitat mapping can be broadly applied to other vulnerable species with similarly narrow habitat parameters to predict current and future management requirements.
