Some of its members were amongst the earliest colonists in St. Christopher's at a time when that island and Martinique were held jointly by the French and the English; and the highest judicial and administrative offices in St. Christopher's, in Nevis, in Antigua, and, more recently, in St. Vincent itself were filled by Sir George Daseu t's ancestors! But the various folk who first told them were so very different, the tales are so very, old, and have changed so greatly in the telling from one generation to another, that there are almost as many ac counts of the way in which the world began as there are nations upon the earth. So it is not strange that the people of the North have a legend of the Beginning quite different from that of the Southern, Eastern, and Western folk. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Popular Tales: From the Norse and North German The norsemen came from the East, and brought a common stock of tradition with them. Settled in the Scandinavian peninsula, they developed themselves through Heathenism, Romanism, and Lutheranism, in a locality lit tle exposed to foreign influence, so that even now the Dale man in Norway or Sweden may be reckoned among the most primitive examples left of peasant life. We should expect, then, that these Popular Tales, which, for the sake of those ignorant in such matters, it may be remarked, had never been collected or reduced to writing till within the last few years, would present a faithful picture of the national consciousness, or, perhaps, to speak more correctly, 'of that half consciousness out of which the heart of any people speaks in its abundance. Besides those world-old affinities and primaeval parallelisms, besides those dreamy recollections of its old home in the East, we should expect to find its later history, after the great migration, still more distinctly reflected; to discover heathen gods masked in the garb of Christian saints; and thus to see the proof that a nation more easily changes the form than the essence of its faith, and clings with a toughness which endures for cen turies to what it has once learned to believe. Download or read book Norse Stories written by Hamilton Wright Mabie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas by Hamilton Wright Mabie is a refreshing read for the young and old alike. The author presents the original Scandinavian poetry in riveting prose and has succeeded in retaining the flavour of the Norse tales without losing anything to translation. Hamilton Wright Mabie has made an excellent selection of myths that fill the 16 chapters in Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas and taken great care to sustain the chronology of events as they unfolded, starting with the creation of the world, moving on to the adventure and warfare with giants and culminating in the regeneration of the new world under the All-Father. While the valour of Thor and engrossing descriptions of battle and victory may tingle the imagination of younger readers, Norse Stories Retold from the Eddas is by no means a book meant only for children. It has hidden within it some moving messages of hope, peace and prosperity, which can only be truly appreciated by a more mature reader. Mabie has kept the tone friendly and engaging. More importantly, he has resisted the all-consuming need to allegorize these beautiful stories and stuck to pure narrative which does absolute justice to the work. Readers can take a trip down memory lane by awakening the child within them with or read it as an adult to absorb the finer nuances of life, happiness and peace. Book excerpt: This general affinity established, we proceed to narrow our subject to its proper limits, and to confine it to the consideration, first, of Popular Tales in general, and secondly, of those Norse Tales in particular, which form the bulk of this volume. In the first place, then, the fact which we remarked on setting out, that the groundwork or plot of many of these tales is common to all the nations of Europe, is more important, and of greater scientific interest, than might at first appear. They form, in fact, another link in the chain of evidence of a common origin between the East and West, and even the obstinate adherents of the old classical theory, according to which all resemblances were set down to sheer copying from Greek or Latin patterns, are now forced to confess, not only that there was no such wholesale copying at all, but that, in many cases, the despised vernacular tongues have preserved the common traditions far more faithfully than the writers of Greece and Rome. The sooner, in short, that this theory of copying, which some, even besides the classicists, have maintained, is abandoned, the better, not only for the truth, but for the literary reputation of those who put it forth. No one can, of course, imagine that during that long succession of ages when this mighty wedge of Aryan migration was driving its way through that prehistoric race, nks -- Gudbrand on the hill-side -- The blue belt -- Why the bear is stumpy-tailed -- Not a pin to choose between them -- One's own children are always prettiest -- The three princesses of Whiteland -- The lassie and her godmother -- The three aunts -- The cock, the cuckoo, and the black-cock -- Rich Peter the Pedlar -- Gertrude's bird -- Boots and the troll -- Goosey Grizzel -- The lad who went to the North Wind -- The master thief -- The best wish -- The three billy-goats Gruff -- Well done and ill paid -- The husband who was to mind the house -- Dapplegrim -- -- The seven foals -- The widow's son -- Bushy bride -- -- Tatterhood -- The cock and the hen that went to the Dovrefell -- -- -- -- -
