Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young couple poses before a painted backdrop depicting a modern building set in a volcanic landscape; a college student grabs his camera as he heads to a political demonstration; a man poses stiffly for his identity photograph; amateur photographers look for picturesque images in a rural village; an old woman leafs through a family album. In Refracted Visions, Karen Strassler argues that popular photographic practices such as these have played a crucial role in the making of modern national subjects in postcolonial Java. Contending that photographic genres cultivate distinctive ways of seeing and positioning oneself and others within the affective, ideological, and temporal location of Indonesia, she examines genres ranging from state identification photos to pictures documenting family rituals. Oriented to projects of selfhood, memory, and social affiliation, popular photographs recast national iconographies in an intimate register. They convey the longings of Indonesian national modernity: nostalgia for rural idylls and “tradition,” desires for the trappings of modernity and affluence, dreams of historical agency, and hopes for political authenticity. Yet photography also brings people into contact with ideas and images that transcend and at times undermine a strictly national frame. Photography’s primary practitioners in the postcolonial era have been Chinese Indonesians. Acting as cultural brokers who translate global and colonial imageries into national idioms, these members of a transnational minority have helped shape the visual contours of Indonesian belonging even as their own place within the nation remains tenuous. Refracted Visions illuminates the ways that everyday photographic practices generate visual habits that in turn give rise to political subjects and communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning to Remember charts Indonesia's turbulent decades of cultural repression and renewal amid the rise and fall of Suharto's New Order regime. These cross-disciplinary pieces illuminate Indonesias current efforts to reexamine and understand its past in order to shape new civic and cultural arrangements. In 1998, "reformasi" brought a wave of relief and euphoria. But Suharto's removal did not dispel persistent corruption, official secrecy and denial, religious and ethnic violence, and security policies leading to tragedy in East Timor, Aceh, and other regions. But the reformasi did open up new possibilities for seeing the past. What followed was a surge of discourse that challenged officially codified national history in mass media and publishing, in public policy debate, in the arts, and in popular mobilization and politics. This volume is an exploration of some of the expressions, narratives, and interpretations of the past found in Indonesia today. The authors illustrate ways in which the dissolution of the Indonesian state's monopoly on history is now permitting new national, local, and individual accounts and representations of the past to emerge. The book covers fields from performing arts and literature to anthropology, history, and transitional justice. The book opens with Goenawan Mohamad's dramatic poem Kali, the first publication of this important work by one of Indonesias leading intellectuals, which has become the libretto for an international opera production. Another chapter is a personal memoir by one of Javas famous shadow-play masters, Tristuti Rachmadi, for years imprisoned under the New Order. Leading historian Anthony Reid commemorates the national struggle at the regional level, while South African lawyer Paul van Zyl compares efforts in transitional justice in Indonesia, East Timor, and South Africa.

Book Labour Market Segmentation in Malaysian Services

Download or read book Labour Market Segmentation in Malaysian Services written by Khong How Ling and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to look at labor in Malaysian services, and also the first to use the labor market segmentation approach to study Malaysian labor. As in most other countries, the services sector has long accounted for more of the labor force than manufacturing in Malaysia. Studies of those working in services in developing countries have tended to focus on the public sector and, in recent decades, the informal sector. This study of workers in services also covers those in private enterprises, both modern (e.g. financial services) and traditional (e.g. transportation services). This study also looks more generally at Malaysian labor market segmentation, especially at ethnicity and gender. Of particular importance are the impact of structural change in the economy and the interaction between these processes and the labor market on job and pay opportunities.

Book Interpreting Portrait Photography

Download or read book Interpreting Portrait Photography written by Irwandi and published by Dwi Quantum. This book was released on with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to provide an overview of how to read a photographic work, especially portrait photography. The purpose of reading in this book is an attempt to understand the interaction between photographers, technical aspects, identity, and socio-cultural aspects that surround the process of creating portrait photos, so as to make them meaningful. The assumption developed here is that these aspects are interrelated so that they affect the final form of a work. Kassian Céphas and Indra Leonardi, were chosen as the two photography figures whose works are reviewed in this book because they have very different backgrounds. It is intended so that readers get information-rich descriptions while opening up opportunities for readers to make independent comparisons.

Book Sites Bodies and Stories

Download or read book Sites Bodies and Stories written by Susan Legêne and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sites, Bodies and Stories examines the intimate links between history and heritage as they have developed in postcolonial Indonesia. Sites discussed in the book include Borobudur in Central Java, a village in Flores built around megalithic formations, and ancestral houses in Alor. Bodies refers to legacies of physical anthropology, exhibition practices and Hollywood movies. The Stories are accounts of the Mambesak movement in Papua, the inclusion of wayang puppetry in UNESCO s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and subaltern history as written by the people of Blambangan in their search for national heroes. Throughout the book, citizenship entitlement figures as a leitmotif in heritage initiatives. Contemporary heritage formation in Indonesia is intrinsically linked to a canon of Indonesian art and culture developed during Dutch colonial rule, institutionalized within Indonesia's heritage infrastructure and in the Netherlands, and echoed in museums and exhibitions throughout the world. The authors in this volume acknowledge colonial legacies but argue against a colonial determinism, considering instead how contemporary heritage initiatives can lead to new interpretations of the past.

Book Timely Assets

Download or read book Timely Assets written by Elizabeth Emma Ferry and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil is running out. What's more, its final depletion, once relegated to a misty future, now seems imminent. In all the more or less apocalyptic discussions of oil and similar depleted resources, nature, labor, and time converge. This volume focuses on how resources, resource-making, and resource-claiming are entangled with experiences of time. Particular expressions of "resource imaginations" often have a strongly temporal aspect: they frame the past, present, and future in certain ways; they propose or preclude certain kinds of time reckoning; they inscribe teleologies; they are imbued with affects of time: nostalgia, hope, dread, spontaneity, and so on. Examining resources as various as silver in Mexico, "diversity" in an American university, and historical documents in Indonesia, the contributors to this volume ask several questions: Under what conditions and with what consequences do people find something to be a resource? What kinds of temporal experiences, concepts, or narratives does thinking of things as resources entail? How does the making and imagining of resources assume or condition particular understandings of past, present, and future? How do understandings of time shape the ways resources are named, managed, or allocated?

Book Moments in Indonesian Film History

Download or read book Moments in Indonesian Film History written by David Hanan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-12 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Indonesian cinema, focusing on moments of unique creativity by Indonesian film artists who illuminate important but less-widely-known aspects of their multi-dimensional society. It begins by exploring early 1950s ‘Indonesian neorealist films’ of the Perfini group, which depict the ethos and emerging moral issues of the period of struggle for independence (1945–49). It continues by discussing four audacious political allegories produced in four discrete political eras—including the Sukarno, Suharto and Reformasi periods. It also surveys the main approaches to Islam in both popular cinema and auteur films during the Suharto New Order. One chapter celebrates the popular songs and B-movies of the Betawi comedian, Benyamin S, which dramatize the experience of the poor in ‘modernizing’ Jakarta. Another examines persisting Third World dimensions of Indonesian society as critiqued in two experimental features. The concluding chapter highlights innovation in a renewed Indonesian cinema of the post-Suharto Reformasi period (1999–2020), including films by an unprecedented generation of women writer-directors

Book Realizing the Dream of R A Kartini

Download or read book Realizing the Dream of R A Kartini written by Joost J. Coté and published by Brill. This book was released on 2008 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realizing the dream of R.A. Kartini: Her sisters' letters from colonial Java presents a unique collection of documents reflecting the lives, attitudes, and politics of four Javanese women in the early twentieth century. Joost J. Coté translates the correspondence between Raden Ajeng Kartini, Indonesia's first feminist, and her sisters, revealing for the first time her sisters' contributions in defining and carrying out her ideals. With this collection, Coté aims to situate Kartini's sisters within the more famous Kartini narrative--and indirectly to situate Kartini herself within a broader narrative. The letters reveal the emotional lives of these modern women and their concerns for the welfare of their husbands and the success of their children in rapidly changing times. While by no means radical nationalists, and not yet extending their horizons to the possibility of an Indonesian nation, these members of a new middle class nevertheless confidently express their belief in their own national identity. Realizing the dream of R.A. Kartini is essential reading for scholars of Indonesian history, providing documentary evidence of the culture of modern, urban Java in the late colonial era and an insight into the ferment of the Indonesian nationalist movement in which these women and their husbands played representative roles.
