This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Lectures on the Steam Engine, in Which Its Construction and Operation Are Familiarly Explained: With an Historical Sketch of Its Invention and Progressive Improvement In preparing an edition of the Rev. Dr. Lardner's Popular Lectures on the Steam-Engine for publication, a few additions have been considered necessary. These consist principally in descriptions of such improvements in the Steam-Engine as have been made in this country, or such notices as may render the work more useful to the American reader. They are embodied in the work in such places as appear fitted to receive them. They may be distinguished from the original paragraphs of the text from their being marked by letters instead of numbers, and their having the initials A. E. subscribed to each of them. Among these additions will be found a more full explanation of the application of the Steam-Engine to railways than is contained in the original; and an account (accompanied by a plate) of the very simple form of the high-pressure engine as it is now constructed in this City. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Steam-Engine: In Which Its Construction and Operation Are Familiarly Explained This volume should more properly be called a new work than a new edition Of the former one. In'fect the book has been almost rewritten. The change which has taken place, even in the short period which has elapsed since the publi cation Of the first edition, in the relation Of the steam engine to the useful arts, has been so considerable as to render this inevitable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Steam-Engine: In Which Its Construction and Operation Are Familiarly Explained The present edition is so much enlarged, by the addition of the tenth and eleventh Lectures, including an account of the Liverpool Railway, and of the preparations for working Steam-Carriages upon turnpike roads, that it may be regarded as a new work, rather than a new edition of the former one. I have neglected no means of obtaining correct information on the subjects included in these two additional sections. On the occasion of a recent visit to the Railway at Liverpool, I was favoured with opportunities of witnessing the performances and capabilities of the engines; and the results of experiments made in my presence are given in the tenth Lecture of the present edition. Book excerpt: Biographies of more than 100 Irish scientists (or those with strong Irish connections), in the disciplines of Chemistry and Physics, including Astronomy, Mathematics etc., describing them in their Irish and international scientific, social, educational and political context. Written in an attractive informal style for the hypothetical 'educated layman' who does not need to have studied science. Well received in Irish and international reviews.

Book Twisted Rails Sunken Ships

Download or read book Twisted Rails Sunken Ships written by John R. Brockman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary disaster investigation reports into the Shuttle, Three Mile Island, or the World Trade Centre did not happen by chance, but were the result of an evolution of the discourse communities involved with investigating technological accidents. The relationships of private companies, coroners, outside experts, and government investigators all had to be developed and experimented with before a genre of investigation reports could exist. This book is the story of the evolution of these investigation discourse communities in published reports written between 1833 and 1879. Using the reports generated by seven different accidents on railroads and steamboats between 1833 and 1876, it is possible to observe the changes in how these reports interacted and changed over the course of the nineteenth century: The Explosion of the Steamboat New England in the Connecticut River, 1833; The Explosion of the Locomotive Engine Richmond near Reading Pennsylvania, 1844; The Explosion of the Steam Boat Moselle in Cincinatti, 1838; The Camden and Amboy Railroad Collision in Burlington, New Jersey, 1855; The Gasconade Bridge Collapse on the Pacific Railroad in Missouri, 1855; The Eastern Railroad Collision in Revere, Massachusetts, 1871; The Ashtabula Railroad Bridge Collapse in Ohio, 1876

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Scientific Americans, Susan Branson explores the place of science and technology in American efforts to achieve cultural independence from Europe and America's nation building in the early republic and antebellum eras. This engaging tour of scientific education and practices among ordinary citizens charts the development of nationalism and national identity alongside roads, rails, and machines. Scientific Americans shows how informal scientific education provided by almanacs, public lectures, and demonstrations, along with the financial encouragement of early scientific societies, generated an enthusiasm for the application of science and technology to civic, commercial, and domestic improvements. Not only that: Americans were excited, awed, and intrigued with the practicality of inventions. Bringing together scientific research and popular wonder, Branson charts how everything from mechanical clocks to steam engines informed the creation and expansion of the American nation. From the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations to the fate of the Amistad captives, Scientific Americans shows how the promotion and celebration of discoveries, inventions, and technologies articulated Americans' earliest ambitions, as well as prejudices, throughout the first American century.
