Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Errors About Plants T would be a thankless service indeed if this con tribution to the history of errors were nothing more than a mere exhibition of certain mistakes and delusions. However prone any of us may be to observe and criticise the errors of others no right minded person can seriously contemplate imperfec tion of any kind with any degree of pleasure; the search for errors has in it none of the satisfaction which rewards the seeker after truth; except, there fore, as a basis for juster views of plant life, and as a lesson of caution against accepting beliefs not founded in reason, this little work has no excuse for its existence. But if it shall, to some extent, enable those for whom it was prepared to see more clearly some of the principles which underlie the operations of the farm and garden, and lead them to rely with greater confidence on their own ability to understand these natural laws it will have ful 'filled the leading purposes for which it was writ ten. Next to acquiring knowledge, one should desire to know where reliable information may be ob. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Book of Annuals 1913 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Annuals, 1913 In choosing a list for the available garden space, the most successful results will be secured by spend ing some little time and study upon the planting ar rangement on paper. It is so much easier to change locations and proportions on a sketch pad than to correct errors after the plants are once started upon their life work. Lay out the garden plot on paper first, representing each foot of length and breadth by a half-inch or other convenient unit. In a plot along a fence or wall, keep the higher plants at the rear and the low edging plants in front. Avoid straight lines in the clumps, allowing the various plantings to run in and partly around neighboring groups rather than as simple bands or blocks. Above all, have one or two generous groups of a particular plant rather than a lot of insignificant patches. With most annuals, it takes a fairly large planting to make a satisfactory showing, and it would be far better to cut down the list of plants to be grown than to at tempt to grow more kinds of flowers than the available space warrants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Flowers: And How to Cultivate Them To grow plants well should be the first aim in the garden: if the plant is worth growing at all, it is worthy to receive every aid to develop in perfection; and one well-grown plant will give more bloom than a mass crowded together. These pages may contain errors of commission as well as of omis sion: if such there be, indulgence must be asked for one whose profession claims all the working hours of the day, and whose hours for horticultural study and writing are necessarily very few. If these records of experience lead any to enlarged interest in owers, teach any an art before unknown, not in vain will they have been written, and the author has his reward. We use every possible precaution to prevent mistakes in the nomenclature of plants, and never intentionally send out a plant under a wrong name but as we are receiving seeds and plants from different collectors all over the world, we cannot guarantee all plants true to name, as it is impossible under the circumstances. This is applicable particularly to plants of recent introduction from foreign countries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen

Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant-Lore Garden-Craft of Shakespeare Since the publication of the First Edition I have received many kind criticisms both from the public critics and from private friends. For these criticisms I am very thankful, and they have enabled me to correct some errors and to make some additions, which I hope will make the book more acceptable and useful. For convenience of reference I have added the line numbers to the passages quoted, taking both the quotations and the line numbers from the Globe Shakespeare. In a few instances I have not kept exactly to the text of the Globe Edition, but these are noted; and I have added the T wo Noble Kinsmen, which is not in that Edition. This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Study One Hundred Lessons About Plants Nature Study is new; Liebig was the first man who used a laboratory for instruction. He began his career as a teacher in 1824. Courses in mathematics and language have had centuries in which to perfect their methods of instruction and the lessons it is best to offer; for this reason, lessons in these subjects are good, if not the best, that can be offered, and the methods of giving them have had opportunity to eliminate errors. The teacher of nature study has almost no past to guide him. The older teach ers of nature study were not themselves taught in schools. As a department of instruction it is without traditions or precedents. Every serious teacher so far has had to pave his own road. All teachers have gone different roads. It could not be otherwise. The material with which nature study deals, is inexhaustible; no one can ever be acquainted with more than an insignificant frac tion of it. It is all good. It will always be the case that success ful teachers will give what they know. They will accordingly teach different things. It is probably true that every successful teacher has, from year to year, taken his pupils over different ground, and that everything done has proved to be good. What it is best to teach we cannot yet tell, in other words, than that that material is best which can be bad. This nature study work has passed through three phases. It was first taught from books. The only nature study work I ever did in school was in Geography and Physiology and every syllable of these came from books. We next added the laboratory. How new this phase of the subject is, may be learned from the presi dential address of Dr. Wiley before the Indiana Science Teachers' Association at Lafayette, in 1895. He says: Prior to 1863 no laboratory instruction was given in Indiana except a little in qualitative analysis.
