Download or read book Piglet written by Melissa Shapiro and published by Atria Books. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of the beloved New York Times bestsellers Marley and Me and Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love, a charming, inspirational memoir about empathy, resilience, kindness, and an adorable deaf blind pink dog. When Connecticut veterinarian Melissa Shapiro gets a call about a tiny deaf blind puppy rescued from a hoarding situation in need of fostering, she doesn’t hesitate to say, “yes.” Little does she know how that decision will transform her, her family, and legions of admirers destined to embrace the saga of the indomitable pink pup. One of the most anxious dogs Melissa had ever encountered, the traumatized Piglet weighed under two pounds upon his welcome into the Shapiro household—which included Melissa’s husband Warren and their three college-aged kids, plus six other rescued dogs. After weeks of reassurance, and lots of love, Piglet connected, gained confidence, and his extraordinary spirit emerged. Melissa soon forged a powerful bond with Piglet, allowing the two to communicate without sound or visual cues. Two months later, when the day arrived to say good-bye to the now dashing, six-pound pink boy dog with the larger than life spirit, Melissa faced a heart-wrenching decision. Could she hand him over to someone willing to give Piglet the full-time attention he required or could she adapt her schedule and her household to make a permanent place for him in her life and work? Of course, the answer was simple: love would find a way. Curious, engaged, and incredibly eager to learn, Piglet quickly became part of the family. What started out as a few simple Facebook posts of Piglet and his pack rapidly evolved into a global celebration of Piglet’s infectiously positive mindset. Piglet: The Unexpected Story of a Deaf, Blind, Pink Puppy and His Family fully illustrates this heartwarming story of one special little puppy with a purpose to teach the power of empathy, love, and kindness.

Download or read book Sound Steps to Reading Storybook Sound Targeting Storybook Sound Steps to Reading Handbook Parent Teacher written by Diane McGuinness, Ph.D. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sound Steps to Reading Storybook contains the full text of the story fragment that begins each lesson. These stories should be read by the parent or teacher later on the same day after the lesson has been completed. Each story features the target sound (phoneme) for that lesson. The stories are humorous and written in rhyme. Trials in the U.S. and the U.K showed that children love them. Many children can begin reading these stories on their own (with a little help) about midway through the program. This is highly motivating. By the end of the program all children can read these stories with ease. The stories will work well with any synthetic phonics program that teaches the spelling alternatives for the sounds in English. Sound Steps to Reading is based on the author’s analysis of the English writing system, one of the most complex writing systems in the world. Mastering this complexity is solved by careful sequencing of the lessons so the child is never confronted with something he cannot do. Every lesson is scripted and no training is necessary to use this program. Lessons contain the same activities in the same order: 1) listening for the target sound in a story 2) a structured listening exercise 3) handwriting training and practice 4) segmenting and blending sounds in real words (reading) 5) copying words 6) spelling dictation 7) reading stories written with words/spellings taught so far. Lessons are cumulative. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson and only contains words with the sounds and spellings the child has been taught. When lessons proceed at the recommended pace of 3 lessons per week, most children become excellent readers, writers, and spellers in about 20-25 weeks. For classroom teachers, lessons will take about one school year. It is advised that the later lessons (last set) be reviewed at the start of first grade. Research results. A study on two kindergarten classrooms was carried out at the Willows School In Los Angeles. Most children could not read at the start of school. When they were tested at the end of the year, 42% scored in the top 1% in the nation, and 75% scored in the top 10%, based on test norms. All but one child scored well above “average.” There are two components to this program. The complete program must include both books. • The Sound Steps to Reading Handbook contains all lessons, all exercises and worksheets. • The Sound Steps to Reading Storybook contains the full text of the story fragment that begins each lesson.

Download or read book The Return of the War Pigs written by Jeff Jeske and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-06-10 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beware the Boar who is slow to anger." So declares the Teaching. And now the War Pigs, a race of half-human half-pigs, are ready to march. After decades of internment in the Mojave, they have a mission: to arm themselves and blow up Los Angeles. Thus begin the adventures of Overlord, Wart Hog, Xerxes, Sergeant Snout, Socko, McPork, Tusker, Brunhilde and the Swine Maidens, and the entire War Pig army, as well as the bus-full of Las-Vegas-bound tourists that they capture on their way to I-95. Their first destination: Wild Bill Snopes' Mojave Military Academy, the U.S. government's main storage depot for retired weapons. Next, the desert town of Nitro, where the law requires all citizens to carry guns, followed by an assault on the Doom Valley Airport. And then on to Los Angeles itself, the San Cochino nuclear facility, and a climactic pitched battle with Valley shoppers and the U.S. Army at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. At the action's core is the unrequited love of Wart Hog for Astrid, one of the human captives. When she escapes, his pursuit leads him through the streets of Hollywood to a personal Armageddon on the nighttime Fourth-of-July beach at Santa Monica.
