Book The Zen Manifesto Freedom From Oneself

Download or read book The Zen Manifesto Freedom From Oneself written by Osho and published by Fivestar. This book was released on 2023-03-17 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is time, ripe time for a Zen manifesto. The Western intelligentsia have become acquainted with Zen, have also fallen in love with Zen, but they are still trying to approach Zen from the mind. They have not yet come to the understanding that Zen has nothing to do with mind. Its tremendous job is to get you out of the prison of mind. It is not an intellectual philosophy; it is not a philosophy at all. Nor is it a religion, because it has no fictions and no lies, no consolations. It is a lion’s roar. And the greatest thing that Zen has brought into the world is freedom from oneself. All the religions have been talking about dropping your ego – but it is a very weird phenomenon: they want you to drop your ego, and the ego is just a shadow of God. God is the ego of the universe, and the ego is your personality. Just as God is the very center of existence according to religions, your ego is the center of your mind, of your personality. They have all been talking about dropping the ego, but it cannot be dropped unless God is dropped. You cannot drop a shadow or a reflection unless the source of its manifestation is destroyed.

Book The Mixtape Manifesto A Pop Culture Confessional

Download or read book The Mixtape Manifesto A Pop Culture Confessional written by SW Hammond and published by Surf Star Media. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coffee table book about a Lost Boy in search of Winnie Cooper, with a helping of tongue-in-cheek wit and sarcasm. An unparalleled view of pop-culture and relationships, filled with rich photography. From music industry professional SW Hammond comes a collection of provocative essays woven to create the misguided anti-love story of a young man learning about relationships through Axl Rose, Paris Hilton, and Taylor Swift. Raised on rock n’ roll, Hammond blends an unparalleled view of pop culture and philosophy that plagues his irrational sense of women and what they want. From childhood viewings of Full House leading to his lifelong hatred of John Stamos, his introduction to the Riot Grrrl movement and Kathleen Hanna, to a questionable infatuation with The O.C.’s Summer Roberts—all of your insatiable favorites are mixed with a reflective-Kevin-Arnold-like inner monolog and a bottle of Jack Daniels. The Mixtape Manifesto: A Pop Culture Confessional is filled with rich photography captured during Hammond’s days on the road while working for Sony Music and Warped Tour, as well as bringing to life the music, movies, and television that has perpetuated his laughable neurotic angst. If you’re ready to take a little mind trip, join in, you just may learn something about your life while reading about his.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A screenwriter and stand-up comic’s hilarious and profound account of his journey into Zen monkhood—featuring a foreword by Leonard Cohen Shozan Jack Haubner is the David Sedaris of Zen Buddhism: a brilliant humorist and analyst of human foibles, whose hilarity is informed by the profound insights that have dawned on him—as he's stumbled and fallen into spirituall practice. Raised in a truly strange family of Mel-Gibson-esque Catholic extremists, he went on to study philosophy (becoming very un-Catholic in the process) and to pursue a career as a screenwriter and stand-up comic in the clubs of L.A. How he went from life in the fast lane to life on the stationary meditation cushion is the subject of this laugh-out-loud funny account of his experiences. Whether he’s dealing with the pranks of a juvenile delinquent assistant in the monastery kitchen or experiencing profound compassion in the presence of his spiritual teacher, Haubner’s voice is one you'll be compelled to listen to. Not only because it’s highly entertaining, but because of its remarkable insight into the human condition.

Book Advice Not Given

  • Author : Mark Epstein, M.D.

Download or read book Advice Not Given written by Mark Epstein, M.D. and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Most people will never find a great psychiatrist or a great Buddhist teacher, but Mark Epstein is both, and the wisdom he imparts in Advice Not Given is an act of generosity and compassion. The book is a tonic for the ailments of our time.”—Ann Patchett, New York Times bestselling author of Commonwealth Our ego, and its accompanying sense of nagging self-doubt as we work to be bigger, better, smarter, and more in control, is one affliction we all share. And while our ego claims to have our best interests at heart, in its never-ending pursuit of attention and power, it sabotages the very goals it sets to achieve. In Advice Not Given, renowned psychiatrist and author Dr. Mark Epstein reveals how Buddhism and Western psychotherapy, two traditions that developed in entirely different times and places and, until recently, had nothing to do with each other, both identify the ego as the limiting factor in our well-being, and both come to the same conclusion: When we give the ego free rein, we suffer; but when it learns to let go, we are free. With great insight, and in a deeply personal style, Epstein offers readers a how-to guide that refuses a quick fix, grounded in two traditions devoted to maximizing the human potential for living a better life. Using the Eightfold Path, eight areas of self-reflection that Buddhists believe necessary for enlightenment, as his scaffolding, Epstein looks back productively on his own experience and that of his patients. While the ideas of the Eightfold Path are as old as Buddhism itself, when informed by the sensibility of Western psychotherapy, they become something more: a road map for spiritual and psychological growth, a way of dealing with the intractable problem of the ego. Breaking down the wall between East and West, Epstein brings a Buddhist sensibility to therapy and a therapist's practicality to Buddhism. Speaking clearly and directly, he offers a rethinking of mindfulness that encourages people to be more watchful of their ego, an idea with a strong foothold in Buddhism but now for the first time applied in the context of psychotherapy. Our ego is at once our biggest obstacle and our greatest hope. We can be at its mercy or we can learn to mold it. Completely unique and practical, Epstein's advice can be used by all--each in his or her own way--and will provide wise counsel in a confusing world. After all, as he says, "Our egos can use all the help they can get."

Book Resisting Reduction

  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 9780262043144
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Resisting Reduction written by Nicky Case and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provocative, hopeful essays imagine a future that is not reduced to algorithms. When Joi Ito published an essay, "Resisting Reduction: A Manifesto," about human flourishing in an age of machine intelligence, his argument against industrial optimizations in the pursuit of growth and for the importance of natural complexity and resilience received such an impassioned response that he invited writers to develop full-length essays continuing the conversation. Resisting Reduction is the result: Ito's manifesto and nine equally provocative responses, all imagining a future that is not limited by a worldview defined by algorithm. Rather than await our inevitable domination by machines, Ito and his respondents argue, we should work toward a future of interconnected complex systems. Ito blames Silicon Valley's "groupthink" and "cult of technology" for claiming that narrow technical solutions can resolve the world's complex problems. More computing power does not make us more "intelligent," he tells us, only more computationally powerful. In their responses, the other writers offer persuasive and compelling variations on Ito's argument. Among other things, they call for a "Human+AI Centaur" as the best way to augment intelligence; draw on indigenous epistemology to argue for an extended "circle of relationships" that includes the nonhuman and robotic; debunk the myth of the lone pioneer and propose instead a model of adaptive interconnectivity; cast "Snow White" as a tale of AI featuring a "smart mirror"; point out the "cisnormativity" of security protocol algorithms; and consider the limits of moral mathematics. In a witty and engaging style, Laren Stover examines the contents of a Bohemians closet, bathroom, and bookshelf. Book Blerwytirhwng The Place of Welsh Pop Music

Download or read book Blerwytirhwng The Place of Welsh Pop Music written by Sarah Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s, Welsh-language popular music emerged as a vehicle for mobilizing a geographically dispersed community into political action. As the decades progressed, Welsh popular music developed beyond its acoustic folk roots, adopting the various styles of contemporary popular music, and ultimately gaining the cultural self-confidence to compete in the Anglo-American mainstream market. The resulting tensions, between Welsh and English, amateur and professional, rural and urban, the local and the international, necessitate the understanding of Welsh pop as part of a much larger cultural process. Not merely a 'Celtic' issue, the cultural struggles faced by Welsh speakers in a predominantly Anglophone environment are similar to those faced by innumerable other minority communities enduring political, social or linguistic domination. The aim of 'Blerwytirhwng?' The Place of Welsh Pop Music is to explore the popular music which accompanied those struggles, to connect Wales to the larger Anglo-American popular culture, and to consider the shift in power from the dominant to the minority, the centre to the periphery. By surveying the development of Welsh-language popular music from 1945-2000, 'Blerwytirhwng?' The Place of Welsh Pop examines those moments of crisis in Welsh cultural life which signalled a burgeoning sense of national identity, which challenged paradigms of linguistic belonging, and out of which emerged new expressions of Welshness.

Book Into the Light of Things

Download or read book Into the Light of Things written by George J. Leonard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-06-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When John Cage opened his compositions to chance sounds in the 1950s, and Andy Warhol began exhibiting paintings of Brillo boxes in the 1960s, the art of the commonplace seemed like something radically, even frighteningly, new. But noting an unprecedented shift, around 1800, away from the idealism of Western aesthetics, Leonard shows that attacks on the art object as outspoken as any made by twentieth-century avant-gardists can be found in the works of Wordsworth, Ruskin, Carlyle, Emerson, and Whitman. From Wordsworth to Cage, a certain kind of artist sought to re-orient humanity's devotion from the next world to this one, to situate paradise in "the simple produce of the common day." "Enough of Science and Art," Wordsworth began his first book of poems. "Come forth into the light of things." Two hundred years later, John Cage would tell us, "We open our eyes and ears seeing life, each day excellent as it is. This realization no longer needs art." By studying artists together with poets, Leonard uncovers the rich tradition that links Wordsworth to Cage and illuminates many figures in between. Into the Light of Things transforms our understanding of modern culture."--Jacket.

Book Walking in Zen Sitting in Zen

Download or read book Walking in Zen Sitting in Zen written by Osho and published by Fivestar. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen is another name for meditation. The word zen comes from the Sanskrit root dhyan – it has traveled far. Dhyan means a state of absolute silence, of thoughtless silence, but full of awareness. Even the thought that ”I am aware” is enough to distract you from your meditation. Even to know that ”I am in meditation” is enough to destroy it. A state of meditation is an innocent, silent state. You are blissfully unaware of your awareness. You are, but you are utterly relaxed. You are not in a state of sleep; you are fully alert, more alert than ever. You are alertness, rather.
