Book Not for You

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ronen Givony
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2020-10-01
  • ISBN : 1501360698
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Not for You written by Ronen Givony and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has never been a band like Pearl Jam. The Seattle quintet has recorded eleven studio albums; sold some 85 million records; played over a thousand shows, in fifty countries; and had five different albums reach number one. But Pearl Jam's story is about much more than music. Through resilience, integrity, and sheer force of will, they transcended several eras, and shaped the way a whole generation thought about art, entertainment, and commerce. Not for You: Pearl Jam and the Present Tense is the first full-length biography of America's preeminent band, from Ten to Gigaton. A study of their role in history – from Operation Desert Storm to the Dixie Chicks; "Jeremy" to Columbine; Kurt Cobain to Chris Cornell; Ticketmaster to Trump – Not for You explores the band's origins and evolution over thirty years of American culture. It starts with their founding, and the eruption of grunge, in 1991; continues through their golden age (Vs., Vitalogy, No Code, and Yield); their middle period (Binaural, Riot Act); and the more divisive recent catalog. Along the way, it considers the band's activism, idealism, and impact, from “W.M.A.” to the Battle of Seattle and Body of War. More than the first critical study, Not for You is a tribute to a famously obsessive fan base, in the spirit of Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch. It's an old-fashioned – if, at times, ambivalent – appreciation; a reflection on pleasure, fandom, and guilt; and an essay on the nature of adolescence, nostalgia, and adulthood. Partly social history, partly autobiography, and entirely outspoken, discursive, and droll, Not for You is the first full-length treatment of Pearl Jam's odyssey and importance in the culture, from the '90s to the present.

Book The British Pop Dandy

  • Author : Stan Hawkins
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351545868
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book The British Pop Dandy written by Stan Hawkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are pop dandies? Why are stars like David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, Pete Doherty and Robbie Williams so dandified? Taking up a wide range of British pop stars, Hawkins seeks to find out why so many have cast themselves in roles that often take style to absurd extremes. In this study, male pop artists are mapped against a cultural and historical background through a genealogy of personalities, such as Oscar Wilde, W.H. Auden, Andy Warhol, No Coward, Derek Jarmen, David Beckham and countless others. A critical analysis of issues and approaches to musical performance through masculinity becomes the focal point of this fascinating study. Ranging from the sixties to beyond the twentieth century, The British Pop Dandy considers the construction of the male pop icon through the spectacle of videos, live concerts and films. Why do we derive pleasure from the performing body, and how is entertainment linked to categories of gender and sexuality? The author insists that pop performances can be understood through human characteristics that relate to the particulars of dandyism, camp and glamour, and this he theorizes through the work of Charles Baudelaire. One of the political objectives of the dandy is to liberate himself through a denial of the structures that assume fixed identity. Not least, it is acts of queering in pop music that characterize entire generations of male artists in the UK. Setting out to discover what distinguishes the British pop dandy, Hawkins considers the role of music and performance in the articulation of hyperbolic display. It is argued that the recorded voice is a construction that idealizes self-representation, and absorbs the listener's attention. Particularly, camp address in singing practice is taken up in conjunction with a discussion of intimacy, which forms part of the strategy of the performer. In a range of songs and videos selected for music analysis, Hawkins points to the uniqueness of the voice as it expresses a transgressive quali

Book 33 1 3 Revolutions Per Minute

Download or read book 33 1 3 Revolutions Per Minute written by Mike Segretto and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you're a lifelong collector or have only just gotten hip to the vinyl revival, navigating the vast landscape of rock albums can be a daunting prospect. Enter Mike Segretto and his mammoth 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute, a history of the rock LP era told through a very personal selection of nearly 700 albums. Beginning with the birth of rock and roll in the 1950s, Segretto moves through the explosive innovations of the 1960s, the classic rock and punk albums of the 1970s, the new wave classics of the 1980s, and the alternative revolution of the 1990s, always with an eye to both the iconic and the ephemeral, the failed experiments and the brilliant trailblazers. It's all here: everything from the classics (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Purple Rain, Nevermind, and countless other usual suspects) to such oddities as albums by Johnny "Guitar" Watson, P. P. Arnold, The Dentists, and Holly Golightly. Throughout, Segretto reveals the perpetual evolution of a modern art form, tracing the rock album's journey from a vehicle for singles and filler sold to kids, through its maturation into a legitimate, self-contained medium of expression by 1967, and onward to its dominance in the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Whether you read it from cover to cover, seek out specific albums, or just dip in at random and let the needle fall where it may, 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute is a fun, informative, and unapologetically opinionated read.

Book excerpt: This is a true-crime story of the murder of an art form: punk rock. Gina Arnold has been witness to this gradual annihilation, and she's not shy about pointing out the perpetrators: Tipper Gore, Rolling Stone, Geffen Records, Miller beer, and even the progenitors of punk themselves, the Sex Pistols, are all implicated in the demise of independent music. In Route 666: On the Road to Nirvana, Gina Arnold gave us a road map to the defiant fury that shaped punk's harsh, musical bloodletting. But now Kurt Cobain is dead. And Courtney Love is playing shows sponsored by beer companies, MasterCard is financing the Monsters of Rock tour, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are sporting free Airwalk sneakers. Arnold knows something has gone terribly wrong. Bad Religion, Metallica, Rancid, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Pearl Jam, the Fastbacks, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails--find out who sold out, who stayed real, and what independent music must do now to regain its lost edge. In 1978 Sid Vicious mocked a Sinatra classic with his version of "My Way." Well, it's 1997, and punk has lost its way. In Kiss This Gina Arnold just may show it the way home.
