Book excerpt: For centuries the Psalms have been a source of prayer, inspiration, comfort, thankfulness, challenge, and blessing. In the sixth century my ancestor, St. Columcille, copied a Psalter that is now the oldest book in Ireland. I have lived with the Psalms for more than 40 years. Last spring I wondered if I could put a few memorized lines of Psalm 90 into the form of a haiku, not thinking at all about making a book. Then I tried putting parts of a few more Psalms into haiku. Some months later there was a haiku for each of the 150 Psalms, and a few more too. The process was for me almost like playing. Perhaps playing and praying are not that far apart. Columcille must have discovered that too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalms for the Poor talk back to the blunt and beautiful phrases of the King James Bible. Sometimes personal, sometimes political, the original Psalms complain, question, curse, and adore: "Why do the wicked prosper?" "When I consider the moon and the stars," "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" "The Lord is my shepherd," "But I am poor and needy." Luther's last words were, "We are beggars." These poems are for the world's poor, and for the pauper in each of us.

Book excerpt: Psalms constitute the largest book of the Holy Bible. Originally composed as uplifting soulful prayers set to melodious instrumental music, psalms now serve more as daily spiritual guidance for righteous conduct. Antony Theodore’s latest book contains two hundred of his select poems based on holy Christian teachings contained in the Book of Psalms. The poems also make several references to Vedas, Upanishad, Gita, Quran and other ancient scriptures of world religions. The poems are arranged in eight interwoven parts covering Songs of the Wild, Song of the Mystic, Laments of Heart, Paeans of Love, Soul’s Songs, Prayer Talks, Songs of Silence and Hymns of God. The topics range from conjugal love to the secrets of dreams, meditation and telepathy. The book provides a penetrative new interpretation of the universal truths underlying Christ's sermons and the inspired songs of David and Solomon. It shows that the spiritual messages contained in the Holy Gospel are essentially the same as those expounded in scriptures of all world religions. The One Truth has been expressed differently through Veda, Bible, Gita and Quran. The book has been edited by the poet and translator Dr Tapan Kumar Pradhan, who has written its introduction in addition to providing detailed commentary on the poems. Dr Tapan has also brought to light amazing similarities between the Book of Psalms and the ancient Indian scripture Sama Veda in his scholarly analysis of the history of psalms. The book makes a startling revelation about the extraordinary connection between Antony Theodore and the mystic Kashmir poet scholar Hemangi Sharma. Dr Tapan has hinted at a definite past life relationship with Hemangi Sharma / Antony Theodore.

In a style more reminiscent of German Expressionism than early medieval woodcut, 31 meditations of classic Christian writers and Saints are brought to life. Well-known poets such as Emily Dickinson and Gerard Manley Hopkins, along with beloved saints Francis of Assisi, and Bernard of Clairvaux, offer faith, hope, and praise for each day of the month. note: This is a facsimile of the original blockbook. Book Translation and Style in the Old Greek Psalter

Download or read book Translation and Style in the Old Greek Psalter written by Jennifer Brown Jones and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While some describe the Greek Psalter as a “slavish” or “interlinear” translation with “dreadfully poor poetry,” how would its original audience have described it? Positioning the translation within the developing corpus of Jewish-Greek literature, Jones analyzes the Psalter’s style based on the textual models and literary strategies available to its translator. She demonstrates that the translator both respects the integrity of his source and displays a sensitivity to his translation’s performative aspects. By adopting recognizable and acceptable Jewish-Greek literary conventions, the translator ultimately creates a text that can function independently and be read aloud or performed in the Jewish-Greek community.

Book The Book of Psalms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeffrey M. Cohen
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2018-07-26
  • ISBN : 1532650787
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book The Book of Psalms written by Jeffrey M. Cohen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey Cohen employs his poetic skill and biblical scholarship to the challenging task of rendering the Book of Psalms into rhymed verse. While there are several fine renderings into English blank verse, notably that of Robert Alter, it is Cohen's belief that it is the rhymed verse genre that can best convey the vibrant and passionate spirit of the original Hebrew poetry, and its innate lyricism that lent it, so naturally and from ancient times, to musical and choral accompaniment. This highly original work conveys the inner meaning, lyricism, and message of the psalms in a manner that will engage and inspire adherents of all faiths and none. It also provides a useful exegetical tool for all who use the Bible for study, teaching, or preaching, demystifying many words and phrases whose meaning translators and commentators acknowledge as uncertain in the original text. This is as much a commentary as a work of poetry, as testified to by the endorsements of several Cambridge University biblical and Hebrew scholars. Before proceeding to create his poetry, the writer consulted the ancient Greek and Latin translations, as well as medieval and modern Jewish and non-Jewish interpretations, in order to attempt to clarify many of the acknowledged textual difficulties in the psalms. In many cases this impelled him to offer his own original interpretations. Readers will find these most helpful in clarifying the thematic link between many succeeding lines and paragraphs that, on a cursory reading of the standard translations, may appear disconnected. For scholars and students of the Bible this work will offer a novel perspective. For those who use the psalms for devotional purposes, this new edition will serve as an inspirational source, and for those whose interest is purely in the poetry, there is also much to appeal.

Book Theopoetry of the Psalms

Download or read book Theopoetry of the Psalms written by C.J.A. Vos and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-10-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Theopoetry of the Psalms Cas J.A. Vos explores the beauty of the Psalms and examines their meaning within the context of exegesis, homiletics and poetry. By investigating the structure, literary genre, history and theology of the Psalms he traces the ways in which they continue to be relevant to contemporary readers and to modern worship. Vos scrutinizes the Psalms as a volume of poetry and a work of art; considers hermeneutical approaches and difficulties, providing not only a verse-by-verse analysis but also a contextual history; outlines a comprehensive homiletic theory for preaching the Psalms; and concludes with a study of the Psalms in liturgy. Theopoetry of the Psalms is valuable to those Biblical scholars who wish to explore the theological and exegetical interpretation of the Psalms as well as to those readers who are interested in liturgics and practical theology for preaching and worship.
